India crash to 48-run defeat

GUWAHATI, Nov 14 (PTI) — After batting New Zealand out of the game in two successive matches, India’s top three batsmen fell in a heap chasing an attainable target as the hosts lost the fourth one-day international cricket tie by 48 runs today to let their rivals square the series 2-all with a match left.

After restricting New Zealand to 236 for nine on putting them in on a track which showed early life and then grew slower, India never recovered from early jolts to be bowled out for 188 in 45.3 overs to dash hopes of wrapping up the series within the distance at the Nehru stadium.

Skipper Sachin Tendulkar (2) failed to reach double figures for the second match in a row and both Rahul Dravid (5) and the free-stroking Saurav Ganguly — all three struck big centuries to propel India to victory in the previous two ties for a 2-1 lead — followed suit as India lost their way.

Left-hander Sunil Joshi cracked a strokeful, unbeaten 61 for his maiden one-day half-century studded with two fours and three sixes after coming in at number eight but it was in vain and he ran out of partners with 4.3 overs left.

Chris Drum (2/31) struck early blows and with fellow paceman Scott Styris (2/39) and left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori (2/37) claimed bowling honours while Chris Harris effected two run outs with direct hits as only Ajay Jadeja (27) and Vijay Bharadwaj (27) showed some top-order resilience.

‘Man of the match’ Chris Cairns (80) struck his 14th fifty and raised 96 runs for the fourth wicket with Roger Twose (46) to pull the Kiwis to respectability after India had left them gasping at 32 for three at an early stage.

Required to score at a reasonable rate of 4.74 an over, the Indians found the going tough once Tendulkar, Dravid and Ganguly fell in quick succession. The focus will now shift to the Ferozeshah Kotla ground in Delhi where the fifth and deciding encounter will be played on November 17.

The hosts suffered an early jolt when Tendulkar was dismissed cheaply with Drum providing the breakthrough. The master batsman could not properly time an attempted drive and Craig Spearman brought off the catch in the cover region after the ball rebounded off silly mid-off fielder Stephen Fleming’s hand.

Stunned by the reverse, the packed crowd were in for more disappointment as in-form Dravid edged a short delivery from Chris Cairns that left his bat to provide wicketkeeper Adam Parore an easy catch.

Ganguly, who began by hitting four glorious boundaries in his 17, fell in the very next over when Drum trapped him leg before with a straight delivery which left India tottering at 27 for three after seven overs.

Both Drum and Cairns bowled tidy opening spells to put the Indians on the defensive and it was left to Jadeja and Bharadwaj to try and rebuild the innings.

The two played cautiously to add 56 runs for the fourth wicket before Harris, who was introduced into the attack from the pavilion end in the 20th over, brought an end to the partnership.

Instead of trying to boost the team position, Bharadwaj went for a mighty heave but missed the line completely to see his stumps dislodged, undoing all the good work he had done alongwith Jadeja.

Bharadwaj’s departure opened the floodgates again as Jadeja followed suit in the very next over. He fell to Vettori in his very second over, trying to guide a sharply turning delivery towards the third man region but only succeeding in edging the ball to Parore.

Dharmani cracks century
From Our Sports Reporter

LUDHIANA, Nov 14 — Pankaj Dharmani scored his third successive century (104) as Punjab declared their first innings at 530 for seven against Delhi on the second day of the four-day North Zone Ranji Trophy league match at the Punjab Agriculture University ground here today.

In the previous league matches, Pankaj remained unbeaten on 202 against Services at SAS Nagar and was also unconquered on 305 here at Ludhiana against Jammu and Kashmir.

At draw of stumps, Delhi were 58 for no loss.

Resuming at their overnight score of 276 for two (Reetinder Sodhi 104 n.o. and Pankaj Dharmani 77 n.o.) Punjab lost their third wicket at the same score. Robin Singh (Jr) struck on the second ball when he consumed Reetinder, caught by the wicket-keeper Vijay Dahiya.

Left-arm batsman Dinesh Mongia joined Pankaj and the pair contributed 45 runs for the fourth wicket stand before Pankaj was caught at first slip by Ashu Dani off the bowling of Robin Singh. Pankaj’s innings lasted 268 minutes and contained 14 fours and one six.

Then Dinesh Mongia (92) and Sanjay Kumar (66) figured in a 123-run fifth wicket stand. Punjab declared their first innings at 530 for about 30 minutes after the tea break.

In the remaining 68 minutes of play, Delhi made 58 without losing any wicket. Ashu Dani and Devinder Sharma with 29 and 25 runs respectively were at the crease.

Lewis is heavy weight champion

LAS VEGAS, Nov 14 (AFP) — Britain’s Lennox Lewis won a 12-round unanimous decision over American Evander Holyfield here to become the undisputed world heavyweight boxing champion.

But the outcome yesterday was far from undisputed, with Holyfield the more active fighter and taking the fight to his larger foe from the start, possibly setting the stage for a third meeting of the two next year.

In the rematch of a controversial draw from last March, judge Chuck Giampa scored it 116-112 while Bill Graham had it 117-111 and Jerry Roth 115-113 for Lewis. All three judges were from Nevada.

Lewis rose to 35-1 and became the first undisputed heavyweight world champion from Britain since Bob Fitzsimmons a century ago. Holyfield fell to 36-4.

Lewis left the USA without at least a share of the heavyweight crown for the first time since Sweden’s Ingemar Johansson took the title 40 years ago.

The championship was unified for the first time in seven years with Lewis capturing Holyfield’s World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation titles and keeping his World Boxing Council crown.

Lewis won his 11th fight in a row since suffering his only defeat to Oliver McCall in a 1994 WBC title fight. Lewis and Holyfield each received $ 15 million for the fight.

Lewis, achieved the defining victory of his career to validate his reign after former champions Mike Tyson and Riddick Bowe discarded belts rather than face him.

Much of the crowd booed the outcome and indeed Holyfield had been by far the more aggressive combatant in a bout much different from the one eight months ago, where Lewis used jabs from his larger reach to keep Holyfield at bay but received only a draw.

Action was hottest in the seventh round even though Lewis spent much of it looking weary. Holyfield used a roundhouse right and solid combinations to stun Lewis before the fight was joined with impressive flurries by both champions.

A slow eighth gave way to an active ninth. Holyfield got the best of the exchanges despite a stunning uppercut that Lewis could not adequately follow up.

While Lewis was holding much of the way and picking his moments to strike, Holyfield was pressing the attack, punching and counterpunching, hitting hard and taking the best Lewis had to offer.

The 10th and 11th rounds featured Lewis leaning on Holyfield and more hugs than hitting and although Lewis became active late in the 11th, it was more often Holyfield pushing a rival 25 pounds heavier than him around the ring.

Holyfield opened a cut under Lewis’ right eye with head contact early in round five, prompting a warning from referee Mitch Halpern.

Seconds later, Lewis was atop Holyfield chest to chest as both dangled over the top rope halfway out of the ring. They carefully rose, glared at each other, and Lewis briefly became aggressive before slipping back into his ineffective tentative tactics.

Unlike the first fight, when Holyfield was content to rarely test the extended arms and took numerous jabs of Lewis, the American threw the majority of punches and dictated the tempo, often as Lewis clung to him.

Holyfield showed from the start this would be a different fight, getting inside and scoring with jabs, keeping his larger rival backstepping.

Instead of sticking his arms forward to keep Holyfield at bay, Lewis looked for attack points and an aggressive start by Holyfield set the tempo.

For most of rounds two and three, both adopted cautious tactics. Lewis left himself open, hands at sides, inviting a Holyfield attack that rarely came, refusing to initiate the action and reluctant to do more than jab.

Late in round three, Holyfield landed a hard right to Lewis’ head, then worked inside and scored to the head and body again as the round ended, a flurry better than most of what Lewis had produced.

A sellout crowd of 18,000 at Thomas and Mack Arena had about 6,000 English fans yelling for Lewis. Both fighters were loudly cheered while promoter Don King was loudly booed and the subject of an obscene chant.

About 700,000 pay-per-view purchases, half a million fewer than in March, barely allowed financiers to break even.

Fans bid adieu to Marshall

BRIDGETOWN (Barbados), Nov 14 (AP) — Thousands of fans, dozens of star cricketers and a former Prime Minister paid tributes today to fast bowling legend Malcolm Marshall, who died from colon cancer last week aged 41.

Former Barbadian Prime Minister Erskine Sandiford, who was among the 2,000 in attendance at the service at a Bridgetown Stadium, called for a permanent memorial to pay tribute to Marshall. Known as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time, Marshall took 376 wickets in 81 Tests for the West Indies between 1979 and 1991, which stood as a record until last year. Marshall was buried with a new, red cricket ball in his coffin as a symbol of his status as one of the greats of the game.

“Until we meet again, my brother, farewell, farewell,” Viv Richards, one of Marshall’s captains during his years with the West Indies team, said during his speech today. Also present was Marshall’s other West Indies captain, Clive Lloyd. Richards and Lloyd were pallbearers, as were present West Indies captain Brian Lara, close friend Desmond Haynes and current West Indies star bowler Courtney Walsh, who overtook Marshall’s record last year.

Despite the accolades from players around the globe, the words that most moved the crowd were from Marshall’s 9-year-old son Mali, who wrote a letter read at the service by family friend Rudi Webster.

“God, please take care of my father, for I love him very much,” it said.

From Our Sports Reporter

ROHTAK, Nov 14 — Himachal conceded a 70-run lead as their innings suddenly collapsed on the second day against Haryana in the North Zone Ranji Trophy league match at Vishwakarma Stadium here today.

Resuming their innings at the overnight score of 32 for 2 in reply to Haryana’s first innings total of 222, Himachal batsmen Nischal Gaur and skipper Rajeev Nayyar put on 76 runs for the third wicket. When the score reached 108, Nischal was dismissed for 50 by medium pacer Feroze Ghyas. Before being caught behind by Ajay Ratra, Nischal stayed at the wicket for 205 minutes. He faced 159 balls. His innings included, eight boundaries. His departure signalled a sudden collapse in the session between lunch and tea. Seven Himachal wickets fell for the addition on only 44 runs and the entire team was bundled out for 152.

Vineet Jain returned with an impressive bowling analysis of 13.4-6-30-4. Feroze Ghyas and Pankaj Thakur took 3 wickets each.

Haryana started their second innings immediately after tea. They tested a new pair of openers. Pradeep Jain who is a specialist bowler, opened the innings with Jitender Singh. The experiment did not work and Pradeep was bowled by Shakti Singh when the batsman had made 9 runs. Jitender and Parinder played 10 overs together before Jitender was dismissed by Rahul Panta at an individual score of 15 runs. When the scoreboard read 62, Amarjeet Kaypee returned to the pavilion after scoring 11 runs. He plumbed lbw to Shakti Singh. Before draw of stumps today, Parinder Sharma and Rajesh Puri had added 60 runs in an unfinished partnership for the fourth wicket. Both of them added runs at a fairly brisk rate. Biggest Test win for S. Africa

HARARE, Nov 14 (Reuters) — South Africa stormed to their biggest Test win when they beat Zimbabwe by an innings and 219 runs with more than a day to spare today.

Their previous biggest winning margin was by an innings and 208 runs against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 1993-94. By contrast, it was Zimbabwe’s worst Test defeat, their first innings defeat on home soil and followed South Africa’s innings victory in the first Test in Bloemfontein.

Zimbabwe, in search of 360 to make South Africa bat again, were bundled out for 141 midway through the afternoon session on the fourth day. They had scored only 102 in their first innings.

South African captain Hansie Cronje declared at the overnight score of 462 for nine and Zimbabwe’s slide to defeat began with the second ball of the day, a sharply swinging delivery from Allan Donald which pitched on off stump and uprooted Grant Flower’s leg stump.

Denmark, England set to qualify

PARIS, Nov 14 (AFP) — Former champions Denmark are virtually through, England are also likely to earn their ticket and little Slovenia are dreaming of qualification following the first leg of the Euro 2000 play-offs.

England’s 2-0 victory at Hampden Park yesterday against arch rivals Scotland was thanks to goals from one man, Manchester United’s Paul Scholes.

Denmark had a handful following their 5-0 goal spree in Ramat Gan leaving Wednesday’s Copenhagen return surely a mere formality.

Slovenia’s Milenko Acimovic hit a 50-metre lob to earn a 2-1 win for Slovenia over top European side Ukraine to give the former Yugoslavian state a chance in a finely-balanced second leg in Kyiv.

Turkey, whose side travelled to the Republic of Ireland despite recent earthquakes, earned a 1-1 draw to take back for their home leg.

Tayfur Havutcu converted from the spot late on after Lee Carsley was penalised for a handball to cancel out Robbie Keane’s opener for the Republic.

Scholes shattered Scotland with two first-half strikes. The red-headed forward sidefooted the first after 21 minutes and headed the second three minutes before the interval to decide a hotly-anticipated match which had brought the two nations to a virtual standstill.

Scotland had plenty of possession and squandered chances to score after both Scholes’ goals but in the end their best effort was a Billy Dodds shot which bounced off the underside of the bar at the end of the first half.

Kevin Keegan’s side now have a decisive advantage for the return leg at Wembley on Wednesday, with the aggregate winners earning a place in next year’s finals in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Meanwhile, the 43,000 spectators at the Ramat Gan stadium saw a comprehensive display of attacking football by Denmark culminating in goals for Jon Dahl Tomasson (2), Stig Tofting, Martin Jorgensen and finally Brian Steen Nielsen.

Israel’s Haim Revivo was sent off in the 58th minute for a reckless challenge when the home side were two goals adrift.

Denmark will not have forgotten the last time they qualified after being group runners-up. In 1992, they replaced Yugoslavia because of the war in the Balkans and became surprising yet popular winners.

Tomasson put the visitors into a comfortable lead at the break, scoring in the second and 35th minutes.
