Srinath joins squad for the final
From Abhijit Chatterjee
Tribune News Service

NEW DELHI, Nov 16 — In spite of Sachin Tendulkar’s denial that India did not miss its front-line bowlers after the 48-run defeat at the hands of New Zealand at Guwahati on Sunday last, the national selectors have recalled the rested Javagal Srinath to bolster the home squad for the fifth and deciding one-day tie against New Zealand, to be played at the Ferozeshah Kotla here tomorrow.

To add to the problems of the home team, already short of quality bowlers after Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble were rested ahead of the 76-day tour of Australia with the Indian squad scheduled to leave on November 22, key batsman Ajay Jadeja was ruled out of tomorrow’s match with a sore shoulder. It is then that the national selectors accepted Sachin’s suggestion that Srinath should be drafted to join the squad. Jadeja, a key component of India’s one-day squad, had a X-ray done on his troublesome right shoulder before it was decided that he would not be available for tomorrow’s game.

The 30-year old Srinath flew in from Bangalore this morning and took part in the nets of the Indian squad, which were conducted at the Palam ground to save the players from crowd disturbance as is the case at the Ferozeshah Kotla with hundreds of fans milling the ground and practice area for no apparent reason.

That India owe a lot to three batsman — skipper Sachin himself, Saurav Ganguly as also Rahul Dravid, who has shown in no uncertain terms that he is equally proficient in the shorter version of the game — was apparent the way the hosts lost the last match at Guwahati after recording two resounding back-to-back wins at Hyderabad and Gwalior after losing the first one-dayer at Rajkot.

If the heroes of India’s 174-run win at Hyderabad were Sachin Tendulkar (186 not out) and Rahul Dravid (153), who together shared a record 331-run partnership for the second wicket, then the star of the Gwalior win was Saurav Ganguly (153 off 150 balls) after the Indian skipper and Dravid were out cheaply. But in the fourth match of the series the three Indian stars failed to get going and the hosts made a hash of chasing a modest New Zealand score of 236 and found themselves 48 runs short of target.

Having brought in a bowler in place of a batsman, the Indian team “think tank” might include Devang Gandhi in the playing squad with either Ajit Agarkar or rookie medium pacer T.Kumaran making way for the seasoned Karnataka star. While Chandigarh Pace Academy trainee Kumaran had pleased the pundits with his bowling, Agarkar has been rusty and looked totally out of form. Agarkar was quite expensive and erratic at Guwahati in spite of the fact that the 22-year-old Mumbai lad was the fastest in the world to take 50 one-day wickets. His return to form is of paramount importance to the national squad, given the fact that the team coach Kapil Dev has pinned a lot of hope on him to do well in the tour of Australia.

The visitors can certainly take hope after their Guwahati win which helped them to square the series at 2-2. And to add to this is the fact that Chris Cairns has fully recovered from a hamstring strain. But the problem for the visitors has been the roller-coaster form of their batsmen with Nathan Astle scoring 120 in the first match and Cairns scoring an invaluable 80 at Guwahati. Skipper Stephen Fleming will look up to his top order for runs if the visitors hope to upset the applecart of the hosts.

The matches of the series have been decided by batsmen and tomorrow’s encounter will not be different in spite of the fact that the Ferozeshah Kotla strip is fresh, relaid recently and used in only one Ranji Trophy tie this season. With the weather turning a bit nippy pace bowlers might get some help in the morning and the toss might prove important. But given India’s poor form in chasing, Sachin would be wise to opt to bat first in case he is lucky with the coin since the New Zealand bowlers, though accurate, might not pose too many problems for the Indian batsmen specially with Dion Nash missing from the action.

But much will depend how Sachin marshals his resources. What is needed is application and commitment from both the batsmen and the bowlers backed up by good fielding on the small ground, if the hosts want to wrap up the series ahead of the gruelling tour of Australia. The hosts will also be wary of the ground where they have lost the last two one-dayers, first to Sri Lanka in the 1996 World Cup and later to Australia in the final of the three-nation cup after reaching the final with an all-win record.

Vandana sets DGC course ablaze
From Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, Nov 16 — Calcutta’s Vandana Agarwal set Delhi Golf Club (DGC) course ablaze in the opening round of the four-round 32nd Ladies Northern India Open Amateur Golf Championship here today.

Playing virtually faultless round, Vandana fired four under 68. This was her personal best so far and it equalled Nonita Lal Qureshi’s record several years ago.

Chandigarh’s promising Irina Brar gave ample evidence of her talent and skill as pitted against many renowned players, she showed her temperament firing one over 73. Placed on second spot, she was five strokes behind the leader.

Lalitha Balasubramaniam, an experienced player, occupied the third position with the score of five over 77.

Defending champion Shruti Khanna and former champion Parnita Garewal were not in their elements. Both played much below their potential and expectations. Shruti fired nine over 81 while Parnita shot 10 over 82.

Vandana’s display was admirable throughout. She caused a major surprise as she managed an eagle on the 15th. She had as many as six birdies and four bogeys.

Vandana’s first nine were a mixture of good and indifferent play. She got birdies on the 2nd and the 4th but earned bogeys on the 3rd and the 5th. Both these bogeys came because of her wavering concentration. Three pars before she got another bogey on the 9th.

Now Vandana was at her best. She had three birdies on the 11th, 12th and 13th before she got an eagle on par-4. It was a grand display. She had another birdie on the 17th. She achieved her back nine in 31 after getting first nine in 37 (total 68).

“I am mighty pleased at my performance” said Vandana, adding: “Hopefully, I continue to play with the same determination”.

Irina’s display was praiseworthy. She played 15 pars, one birdie and two bogeys to snatch the total of one over 73.

It was a remarkable play for a youngster who seems on the high road to causing surprises as she gains in experience.

Lalitha was out in two over 38 and back come in three over 39 to get the score of five over 77. A seasoned campaigner, she played as well as she could.

The performance of two favourites, Shruti and Parnita was disappointing. After getting 36 in the first nine, Shruti was a bundle of nerves. Double-bogey on the 10th, she had another bogeys on the 11th and the 12th before she plunged head-on trouble on the 13th where she had triple bogey.Top

BSF retain title
From Our Sports Reporter

JALANDHAR, Nov 16 — Border Security Force, Jalandhar beat Punjab and Sind Bank, Delhi 4-3 in the tie-breaker to retain the title in the Surjit Memorial Hockey Tournament here today.

Border Security Force had entered the final for the fifth time. Earlier they won the championship in 1998 while they remained runners-up in 1986, 1988 and 1989.

In the first half the BSF wingers and forwards moved swiftly.

They often cut through the rival defence with effortless ease. Their tackling trapping and distribution was brilliant.

The bankmen used their left flank and also played much below their expected form.

BSF took the lead in the ninth minute when Peter Tirkey gave a nice pass to his Shinu Herenz. He cut to his right, and then with a sudden swift movement veered right again into the circle and despite being tackled by another defender, sent a sizzler, much to the amazement of the rival defence. They would have added another goal in the next five minutes had they not wasted two penalty corners in succession. At half time BSF were leading by 1-0.

In the 40th minute PSB nearly equalised when Bhupinder Hayer entered the circle out BSF custodian Jasjit Singh dived to his left to clear the ball. In the 50th minute Sanjiv Kumar gave a through pass to Sarvjit Singh but the shot missed the target. The bankmen got the equaliser in the 58th minute when Rajinder Singh converted the fourth penalty corner.

In the tie-breaker the scorers for the winners were Shinu Herenz Mirnus Lakra, and Harbhajan Singh while Rajbir Sarkaria and Prabhdeep Singh were the scorers for losers.

The winners were awarded a cash prize of Rs 60,000 besides the trophy. The runners-up pocketed Rs 40,000 and the trophy.
