New Zealand settle for draw SAS NAGAR, Oct 14 New Zealand batsmen displayed tremendous tenacity and right temperament to salvage a draw on the concluding day of the first Test in the three-Test Pepsi Challenger Cup at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium here today. A fair share of credit must go to the Kiwi skipper Stephen Fleming, who continued to hold on to one end till the last ball of the match. He was assisted appreciably by Matt Horne, Craig Spearman and Nathan Astle, who also complimented their skipper very well in keeping the Indian bowling attack at bay. For the Indians, the sole consolation was that leg-spinner, who bowled a marathon spell of 41 overs conceding 42 runs for three wickets, became the third highest wicket taker for India in Tests behind Kapil Dev (434) and Bishan Singh Bedi (268). When Kumble took the wicket of McMillan, who tied with leg-spinner Bhagwat Chandershekar as the third highest wicket taker. But the wicket of Fleming which he took on the last ball of the match helped him surge ahead of the legendary leggie. Fleming looked focussed on the job at hand and showed the right mix of sound defence and technique to thwart Indians from going one-up in the series. The left-handed batsman, who came in after the fall of Craig Spearmans wicket roughly one hour after the start of the play today, defied the Indian bowling attack for 325 minutes before being finally dismissed after scoring valuable 73 runs his 20th fifty in Tests. The match looked set for a tame draw up to the tea break when the visitors were setting pretty at 188 for the loss of four wickets. Keeping Flemings company was promising 23-year-old Craig McMillan. Artificial excitement was raised when the visitors lost the wickets of McMillan and wicketkeeper Adam Parore towards the fag end of the play. But the breakthroughs came Indias way far too late. And the determined rival skipper saw to it that the Sachin Tendulkar-Kapil Dev association did not get off to a winning start and was dismissed only after he had steered his side to safety. Sachin Tendulkar rotated the strike repeatedly in his effort to unsettle the batsmen. Ace strike bowler Javagal Srinath, who finished the match with a creditable haul of eight wickets, was adjudged man of the match. He bowled his heart out allowing no respite to the rival batsmen batsmen during his long spell of 31 overs in the second innings. Kumble and left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi, who raised hopes of a close finish with the wickets of Matt Horne and Spearman in the pre-lunch session, lent admirable support to him. But this was not good enough for the team and in the ultimate analysis it was Flemings efforts which saw his team emerge unscathed. New Zealanders, quite understandably, just concentrated on staying at the wicket without giving much thought to runs. They were content to defend as the pre-lunch as well the post-lunch sessions each produced 54 runs in 30 overs. Joshi, who opened the bowling along with Srinath was miserly and effective in his first spell in which read 11-7-8-2. He accounted for Horne, who was drawn forward but succeeded in snicking the ball to alert Saurav Ganguly stationed at first slip, and Spearman, who miscued a sweep shot to be caught again by Ganguly. After these twin successes the days grind did not prove fruitful. The focus now shifts to Kanpur where the second Test will get under way on October 22. Windies beat Lanka by four wickets SHARJAH, Oct 14(PTI) West Indies middle order batsman Jimmy Adams struck a patient unbeaten half century to guide his team to a three-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in a low-scoring first match of the three-nation cricket series here today. The seasoned left-hander from Jamaica played the sheet anchors role to perfection after the shocking dismissal of skipper Brian Lara (0) in the first over as West Indies, after bundling out Sri Lanka for 178 runs in 49.3 overs, reached 181 for seven in the same number of overs. Adams, who came into the middle after Lara was caught behind by Romesh Kaluwitharana down the leg side off Chaminda Vaas with just one run on the board, struggled at the start but played right through the innings as West Indies made a good start to their campaign at the flood-lit Sharjah Stadium here. The southpaw, who was declared the man-of-the match for his splendid effort, braved a bout of cramps towards the end of the innings and a fine spell by off-spinner Mutthiah Muralitharan (2/24), to keep one end up in the pursuit of his objective. Adams, who claimed 1/23 off 10 overs after Jayasuriya chose to bat, steadied the West Indies innings with youngster Wavell Hinds (35) after the unlucky dismissal of Sherwin Campbell (1), out hit wicket when he stepped on the wicket trying a forceful shot off Vaas in the third over. Amandeep Johl finishes 4th BANGKOK,Oct 14 (UNI) Chandigarh professional Amandeep Johl shot four under par 68 while his city mate Jeev Milkha Singh carded three under 69 to finish fourth and eighth respectively on the opening of the $ 220,000 Lexus international golf here today. South Africas Hendrik Buhrmann had a dream opening round as he fired six under par 66 to take the lead. Apart from Amandeep and Jeev, seven other Indians in the fray had uneven first round. Delhi-based professional Jyoti Randhawa, Gaurav Ghei and Calcuttas Uttam Mundy returned identical cards of par 72 and were clubbed together at 39th slot. Chandigarhs Amritinder Singh and Calcuttas Arjun Singh shot one over par 73 round and were at joint 55th place. Delhis Vivek Bhandari shot poor four over 76 and was way down the leader board at 91st position. Calcuttas Indrajit Bhalotia had a dismal outing as he finished with 11 under par 83 and was at 142 place in the field of 144. Buhrmann holed several long putts to take a one stroke lead over Singapores Mardan Mamat and Asian PGA debutant Sammy Daniels of South Africa. Buhrmann overcame a bogey at the first hole to shot seven birdies on way to his 66.He had birdies at the 3rd,5th,9th,10th,12th,16th and 18th holes. Taiwans Lu Chien-Soon, Pakistans Taimur Hussain and Indias Amandeep Johl are in joint fourth a further shot behind. European Tour star Jeev Milkha Singh shot a hole in one and that helped him to a 69. Jeev ,currently 48th on the European money list and in confident mood after his victory over world number 5 Lee Westwood of England in last weeks Alfred Dunhill Cup,was delighted by his ace at the 154 yard third hole, his 12th of the day. I hit a nine iron and it went in after just one bounce-I have had one other hole-in one but that was during a practice round in India said Jeev who missed out on a Lexus car which is on offer for the first ace at the 13th hole. I knew there was nothing at stake as there was not a car or a sign on the tee. My only reward was a handshake from playing partners Prayad Marksaeng and Gerry Norquist but I am happy with that Jeev said adding that he was unlucky on the greens and would have shot lower if a number of putts had not rimmed out. Winner of 1997 Pryad
Marksaeng of Thailand is amongst a group of 17 players on
two under 70. |

Sahi Golf heading for close
finish CHANDIGARH, Oct 14 Sandy Lehal played another round of 3 over par 75 to remain ahead on the penultimate day of the second Samarvir Sahi Chandigarh Open Amateur Championship at the Chandigarh Golf Club today. Competition is snapping at his heels and the last day promises to be a cliff-hanger. Jasjeet Singh of Noida leads the charge. He had a scintillating level par 72 round that lifted him from the sixth to the second position, overtaking his brother Simmerjit Singh on the way, to lie two shots behind the leader. Saurab Bahuguna who unfortunately pulled his 18th drive into the hole-side bunker of the 17th hole, to drop a shot, lies two strokes further behind. Gurbaaz Manns is another greatly improved position making it fifth from the 10th overnight. Sandy Lehal despite running a fever made a better start today but dropped shots on the second and fifth in the front nine. A Birdie on the par three 11th was nullified by bogeys on the 14th and 15th. Sandy displayed grit and cool determination to overcome his poor health and finish creditably with a three over par 75 and retain his lead coming into the final day of the championship. The best round of the day belonged to Jasjeet Singh, a young assistant trainee with Gas Authority of India, who with a judicious mixture of verve and maturity carded an excellent level par 72. Firing birdies on the third, fifth and 10th holes to balance dropped shots on the first, four and 15th holes. Jasjeets round would have been far better but for very closely missed birdies on the eight, 13th and 16th. Jasjeet expressed his delight with his game and his putting in particular. He feels the greens here are far better than those at Delhi and that the course is playing exceedingly well. He also laid to rest the myth that the Chandigarh course is unduly long. he never used his driver but for two holes in the entire round. Saurabh Bahaguna played another solid round of three over par 75. He would have done better but for unfortunately lost strokes on the birdie-making 13th and the 18th. Saurabh has been hitting it long and straight throughout the tournament and his three wood is the envy of his compatriots. it was a delight to see him land near the green with his second shot on the par-5 16th and then birdie with a great chip and tap in putt. Gurbaaz Mann had his first good round of the tournament and but for an out of bounds on the ninth and consequent double bogey, he would have played a level par round stringing pars together without a break. He now lies fifth, seven strokes behind the leader and very much in the hunt. The scores: Sandy Lehal
