Taiwan to purchase satellite from France
TAIPEI, Oct 25 (AP) — Taiwan plans to cancel a deal to buy a $ 34 million telecommunication satellite from Germany, whose government is blocking the delivery of the technology because it fears a backlash from China, a newspaper reported today. Taipei has decided to purchase the equipment from France instead, although the USA and other competitors in aerospace market are also pushing for the contract, the China Times reported today.

34 feared killed
SHILLONG, Oct 25 (UNI) — More than 34 persons were feared killed when a mini bus fell into a 150-foot deep gorge near Mawpyrpong in East Khasi Hills district this morning. Official reports received here said the bus, coming from Nongwar, was carrying 60 passengers.

Iraq executions
DUBAI, Oct 25 (AFP) — A total of 123 prisoners, including 19 political detainees, were executed in a single day at a jail near the Iraqi Capital, an Iraqi opposition group said today. The Iraqi Communist Party in a statement said, the executions were carried out on October 12 at Abu Gharib prison, 30 km west of the Capital. The statement gave the names of 19 opposition figures from the suburbs of Baghdad and mainly Shiite in southern Iraq, but said the rest of those executed were common law prisoners.

5 die in accident
HYDERABAD, Oct 25 (PTI) — Five persons were killed and one was injured in a collision between a milk van and a car near Salumpudi village in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh today. The van, proceeding towards Vijayawada from Rajahmundry dashed against the car coming from opposite direction resulting in the death of five occupants of the car.

Minorities quota
CHENNAI, Oct 25 (UNI) — Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi today assured a minorities’ delegation that he would soon take steps to provide exclusive reservation for Muslim minority in the state. The delegation led by Bishop Ezra Sargunam, head of Evengelical Church of India comprising religious heads of Islam, Punjabi and Jain communities, called on the Chief Minister at the Secretariat here this morning. He told the delegation that steps were being taken to set up an Urdu academy.

SC notices to govt
NEW DELHI, Oct 25 (UNI) — The Supreme Court today issued notices to six ministries, asking them to place on record the steps they have taken on the coming review of Trade-related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), scheduled to be taken up at the Seattle round of the WTO. The notices, returnable within the next eight weeks, was issued by a three-judge Bench to Ministries of Commerce, Agriculture, Health, Environment and Forest, Industries and Law, Justice and Company Affairs. The Bench heard the case on a petition challenging the Patent (Amendment) Act, 1999. The Act seeks to offer exclusive marketing rights to trans-national corporations.

Shoot orders
IMPHAL, Oct 25 (PTI) — Security forces have been issued shoot-at-sight orders against armed militants who try to disrupt the October 28 repoll in 176 polling stations of outer Manipur Lok Sabha seat, official sources said today. The sources said all measures had been taken for the smooth repoll and additional central forces had been deployed.

Ex-Mayor’s plea
TEHERAN, Oct 25 (Reuters) — Iran’s Supreme Court has undercut a bid to release Teheran’s maverick moderate former Mayor, jailed after a graft conviction, newspapers reported today. The Daily Arya said the Supreme Court reversed an appeals court ruling that cut to six months Gholamhossein Karbaschi’s two-year jail term, effectively freeing him after time served.

Afghan clashes
PESHAWAR, Oct 25 (DPA) — Clashes between Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban militia and the opposition alliance resumed today after a week-long lull, the AIP agency reported. It said eight persons were killed and 12 others wounded from both sides in fighting overnight and Monday morning.

USA may lift sanctions
NEW DELHI, Oct 25 (PTI) — The USA tonight hinted at an early end to economic sanctions imposed on India in the wake of Pokhran nuclear tests in May last year. "Our hope is that President Bill Clinton will have the authority to end the certification very soon", US Energy Secretary Bill Richardson told reporters on his arrival here for wide-ranging discussions with Indian leaders and doing spadework for Mr Clinton's visit to India early next year.
