Kiwis crash to 8-wkt defeat KANPUR, Oct 25 (PTI) Anil Kumble proved to be a match-winner once again with a 10-wicket Test haul paving the way for an emphatic eight-wicket win for India against New Zealand in the second cricketing encounter on the penultimate day here today. After Kumble wrecked the New Zealand second innings with 6 wickets for 67 runs, skipper Sachin Tendulkar imperiously led India to victory as they overhauled the target by racing to 83 for two wickets in their second knock, midway through the final session before a sellout crowd at the Green Park. India overcame stiff resistance from the Kiwi batsmen to bowl them out for 155 in the second innings about 10 minutes before scheduled tea break to leave themselves the simple task of reaching 82 runs for a win. Tendulkar smashed an unbeaten 44 off 39 balls and enterprising opener Devang Gandhi joined the run plunder to remain 31 not out as India reached 83 for two in just 18.2 overs in 77 minutes after being reduced to seven for two. It was Indias 14th victory in 39 matches over the New Zealanders and fourth at this venue as well as Tendulkars first Test victory in his second stint at the helm of Indian cricket. India, whose 74-run first innings lead proved crucial on a crumbling spinner-friendly pitch, never really let go of their advantage before finishing off in style ahead of the final Test in Ahmedabad starting on October 29. Kumble, who made the victory possible well within the distance, was named man-of-the-match. The 29-year-old Karnataka bowler, whose 10-wickets in an innings enabled India to level their series against Pakistan in February, proved a terror on a crumbling track as he brushed aside recent disappointments and omission from the national side with aplomb. Kumble finished with a memorable match-haul of 10 for 134 for his third such effort behind his rich bag of 11 for 128 against Sri Lanka in Lucknow in the 1993-94 series and the 14 for 149 he registered against Pakistan in Delhi. Young off-spinner Harbhajan Singh played a splendid supporting role claiming three for 33 runs as the Indian spinners, despite left-arm Sunil Joshi struggling to impress, exploited the vagaries of the track to the hilt. The Kiwi batsmen, left at a hopeless 17 for three overnight, showed their gumption by making India bat a second time after it had looked last evening that they may not make up the first innings deficit of 74 runs. Wicket-keeper Adam Parore typified the defiance, top scoring with 48 and notching up 57 runs for the seventh wicket with Craig McMillan (31) after posting 38 runs for the sixth with skipper Stephen Fleming (31) in the morning that enabled the visitors to avoid an innings defeat. Parore, who arrived at the wicket with the Kiwis in danger of buckling after being reduced to 33 for five, five overs into the morning, countered the Indian attack for over three hours (187m, 137b, 7x4) before becoming the ninth man out, bowled off-stump playing an ambitious sweep off Harbhajan. Opener Ashu Dani fell lbw to medium pacer Syed Javed for 76 when the team score was 139. Dani with Akash Malhotra scored 110 runs for the second wicket. Akash was clean bowled by spinner M V Rao for 42. Delhi skipper Ajay Sharma joined Dani but could add only 12 runs for the third wicket. Ajay was caught at slip by G S Thapa of spinner M V Rao. Mithun Manhas is batting at 85. Manhas along with Virender Sehwag scored 113 runs for the fifth wicket. Sehwag was caught at extra cover by Sanjay Verma of the bowling of Pankaj Maitrey. At lunch, the score was 163 for three with Ajay and Sehwag on the crease. The bowling of services was very mediocre and lacked penetration. Medium pacer Javed and spinner Rao took two wickets each. Lapentti claims Lyon ATP title PARIS, Oct 25 (Reuters) Ecuadors Nicolas Lapentti pulled off a rare indoor tennis title success when he crushed Australian Lleyton Hewitt 6-3 6-2 in the final of the Lyon Grand Prix. The sixth-seeded Lapentti had two narrow escapes earlier in the tournament yesterday, saving match points in his first round tie against Dutchman Jan Siemerink and in his semifinal clash with Swede Magnus Gustafsson. This tournament will remain something very special to me because I never was very successful indoors and I nearly lost twice this week. I could not dream of a better outcome, said Lapentti. Winner in Indianapolis earlier this year, Lapentti will now hope to emulate Alex Corretja. The Spaniard had never shone indoors either before last year, when he won in Indianapolis and Lyon, then went on to win the ATP Tour world championship. The problem is I have not yet qualified (for the tour championship), said Lapentti, world ranked 14th. To improve indoors when youre considered a clay-court specialist is a matter of psychology. You must not tell yourself you cannot play on all surfaces, he added. The 18-year-old Hewitt, also a relative newcomer indoors, had only come to Lyon to prepare for the Davis Cup final against France in December. I missed a lot of
easy volleys early on and it gave him confidence. But I
was surprised how varied his game is, the
Australian said. |
Tauziat annexes Kremlin Cup MOSCOW, Oct 25 (Reuters) Fourth seeded Nathalie Tauziat beat second seed Barbara Schett 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 yesterday in the final of the $ 1,050,000 Kremlin Cup to win her first title of the year. The win took Tauziat from No. 10 to No. 7 in the world, her highest ranking ever. The Frenchwoman said she had reservations about competing in Moscow after her disappointment in the Fed Cup quarter-final tie between Russia and France earlier this year. It was really tough for me to come and to play on the same court where I lost all my three matches and everyone said that I helped Russia to win, she said. It was a nightmare then, but Im in heaven now. Things did not look all that bright for Tauziat in the first set. But after losing it in just 28 minutes, she began her comeback. Tauziat broke her opponent to start the second after Schett played a loose opening game. The 23-year-old Austrian broke back, however, in the sixth game to level the set at 3-3, but Tauziat was not to be denied this time. She broke right back for a 4-3 lead and then evened the match at one set a piece with a firm forehand volley. In the final set, it was all Tauziat, scoring three more breaks and clinching the win on her first match point with a crisp cross-court winner after one hour and 22 minutes. I think the turning point was in the second set at 3-3 all, said Tauziat. She had 30-0 on her serve but I made a key break and from that point on my confidence just soared. Yes, that was the
key point in the match when I lost my serve at 3-3,
agreed the eighth-ranked Schett. Until then, I
served well and returned well, but after that my game
just fell apart. |
Sampras hopes of ending year as No 1 fade away STUTTGART (Germany), Oct 25 (Reuters)Pete Samprass hopes of finishing the season as world number one for the seventh time in a row virtually disappeared after he pulled out of the Eurocard Open yesterday. The 28-year-old Wimbledon champion was forced out of the tournament which begins today through a shoulder injury. His exit cost him 195 ranking points and he now lies 1,100 behind U.S. and French Open champion Andre Agassi. If top seed Agassi wins in Stuttgart, then the gap between the two would grow far too much for Sampras to realistically make up. He plans only two more tournaments in 1999, the Paris Open the week after next and the ATP world championship finals in Hanover two weeks after that. Sampras already holds the record for six consecutive years as number one and now has a record 13th Grand Slam win as his remaining career ambition. Agassi, who is one of only five men to have won all four Grand Slam events, said. Finishing as world number one is now my main goal as that is something I have never done before. He can take nothing for granted this week in the $ 2,450,000 Super Nine event with every other leading player apart from Sampras taking part. |
Kumble reaches 250-wkt mark KANPUR, Oct 25 (UNI) Leg spinner Anil Kumble yesterday became the third Indian bowler to have 250 or more Test wickets in his kitty. The ace bowler from Karnataka claimed his 250th wicket trapping New Zealand opener Mathew Horne leg before on the third day of the second Test match at the Green Park ground here. It was his 55th Test. He is the third Indian to achieve the landmark, behind legendary allrounder and present coach Kapil Dev, against whose name stands the world record for the most number of wickets (434) in Test cricket, and former captain and off-spinner Bishen Singh Bedi who picked 266 wickets. Kumble achieved the feat 12 Tests earlier than Bedi who registered the record in 67 Tests. In the beginning of this year, Kumble had become the second bowler in Test history to claim 10 wickets in an innings and matched a 43-year-old record of Englishman Jim Laker. The Kumble magic enabled India to savour victory against Pakistan in Delhi. List of Indian bowlers to take 250 or more wickets: Kapil Dev: 434 wickets in 131 Tests. Bishen Singh Bedi: 266
in 67 Tests. Anil Kumble: 250 in his 55th Test in

Himachal Pradesh skittled out for
129 runs SAS Nagar, Oct 25 Himachal Pradesh are not counted among the formidable outfits in the national cricket championship. The team does not have big guns capable of upsetting the applecart of the established outfits. Nor does their previous record give the impression of the team capable of posing serious threat to better teams. In their four-day North Zone Ranji Trophy league match currently under way at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium here they were not expected to extend a team like Punjab. But the way they performed on the second day today would certainly not do any good to their reputation. After bowling out Punjab for 354 in the first innings they proved unequal to the task of building the innings and get as close to the total as possible.Their batsmen lacked temperament and technique to stay and amass runs as wickets kept on tumbling with regularity and the team was bundled out for paltry 129 runs, handing a handsome 225-run first innings lead to the rivals. Punjabs young all rounder Reetinder Sodhi was richly rewarded for his efforts with the ball. He maintained a good line and length and finished the day with a satisfying haul of five wickets. Sandeep Sharma made early inroads in the innings, claiming three wickets. Punjab had the option of enforcing the follow on and have a go at the batting line-up in an attempt to finish the match well ahead of scheduled time. But they decided otherwise opting for some valuable batting practice, perhaps in view of the busy schedule ahead. The only consolation for the visitors was that they were able to claimed the prized scalp of Punjab premier batsman and former India opener Navjot Sidhu before he was able to get into his groove. The Patiala batsman, who had the scores of three and one in the previous two outings during the past as many days, continued his dismal run today also as he ended up giving a simple catch to Sangram Singh fielding at mid-on off medium pacer Shakti Singh after scoring just two runs. Left-arm pacer Parveen Sharma provided his team an early breakthrough, having skipper Vikram Rathore caught by Shakti at square leg in his first over.At the draw of stumps the hosts were 38 for the loss of two wickets. Earlier in the morning diminutive Yashwinder Pal Singh played a confident knock of 32 runs to be the highest scorer from the side. Opener Nischal Gaur looked in fine nick until he was bowled by left-arm spinner Navdeep Singh, while Jaswant Singh also played well and compiled 20 runs. Resuming at the overnight score of 261 for two, Haryana added 208 runs for the loss of six wickets. The visitors lost the wicket of Amitpal Singh (26) and were 93 for one. Opener Ranjit Bali (44) and Kanwaljeet Singh (14) were at the crease at close. Over-night batsman Rajesh Puri added two to 107 before being clean bowled to a delivery of Vijay Sharma. Amarjeet Kaypee, batting at 17 yesterday, was out lbw to Vijay Sharma at his total of 95, missing the century by five runs. Sanjay Dalal scored 81 while the three remaining batsmen Rajesh Boora (8), Pankaj Thakur (4) and Vineet Jain (5) failed to make any significant contribution. Ravnit puts Punjab in command PATIALA, Oct 25 Ravnit Rickey with an unbeaten knock of 152 put Punjab in command in the North Zone Inter-State Cooch Behar Trophy against Haryana here today. The Haryana pace duo of Joginder and Rajnesh initially showed the ability to make the swing and swerve from the both the right-handed opening batsmen. After the early exit of opener Munish Sharma, Punjab became a little jittery as both skipper Yuvraj Singh and Gagninder Garry were back in the pavilion within a space of 7 balls, leaving Punjab at 82 for 3. The onus of building a formidable total rested with Rickey and the moment he steeped in, he was confidence personified. Two rasping front foot drives on either side coupled with a short arm pull which rocketed to the ropes reduced the pressure on the hosts. Haryanas frailty in the spin department stood thoroughly exposed as Rickeys belligerence with the bat made the rival attack look hollow. Brief scores: Punjab
