AMRITSAR
Condemned:
The management of dargah Peer Baba Muradshah, has condemned the demolition of the boundary wall of the dargah by the Municipal Corporation. The chairperson of dargah, Ms Poonam Sharma, in a letter to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal copies of which were released to the Press, lamented that MC officials demolished the wall on Monday without any prior notice.

Inaugurated: Dr Inderpal Singh, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, inaugurated a four-day "Literary and Fine Arts Youth Festival" on Wednesday by lighting a lamp in the Dashmesh Auditorium on the campus.

Workshop: A two-day workshop on "Role of Networking in Scientific Information Processing" was inaugurated by Dr H.S. Soch, Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University at the conference hall of the Guru Nanak Bhavan here on Wednesday. The workshop has been sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, and was organised under the aegis of Distributed Informatics Sub Centre (DISC) of the university.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Electrical Merchant Association: President — Mr Sunder Dass Arora; General Secretary — Mr Ramesh Gupta; and Treasurer — Mr Avtar Singh.

Doctors' association: The executive meeting of the Junior Doctors Association (JDA) was held here on Wednesday. Members threatened to launch a statewide agitation if the state government did not withdraw hike in fee of undergraduate and post graduate courses in medical colleges. Dr Rajnish Sharma, President, JDA, said the executive meeting condemned the decision of the state government to hike the fee. He also condemned the charges being taken by the state government from resident doctors, availing hostel facilities.

Ferozepore
Flag march: A large number of employees under the banner of the Punjab Subordinate Services Federation took out a flag march on Tuesday in support of their demands. The march culminated at Canal Colony Workshop, Hussainiwala, where the employees also held a rally. The rally was addressed by Mr Kulwant Singh Lehri and Mr Parmo Goga.

GURDASPUR
Thief arrested:
The police naka party arrested Bodh Raj of Singowal near Pul Jakarian under Dhariwal, police station on Wednesday, for his alleged involvement in a number of thefts in Gurdaspur and Jalandhar districts. One .32 bore pistol, 3 cartridges and Rs 3,500 in cash, were recovered from the arrested person. The district police chief said Bodh Raj and his accomplices were involved in cases of theft at Bal village from where they had stolen ornaments. A case under Sections, 379/34 of the IPC and Sections 25-54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered against the accused.

Prohibited: Mr S.K Sandhu, District Magistrate, issued orders prohibiting the use, sale, purchase, manufacture and storage of crackers in the district. The order will remain in force till October 30.

HOSHIARPUR
Eye camp:
A free eye check-up camp was organised by the local Samaj Sewa Samiti at Chabewal village, 12 km from here, on Tuesday. Mr Raman Kapur, President of the samiti said a team of doctors examined more than 200 persons at the camp and the samiti provided medicines free of cost to 135 patients.

LUDHIANA
One arrested: The Sahnewal police has arrested Ramesh on a charge of murder of 10 year-old, Ashok Kumar. He was murdered on October 17. According to the police, Ashok's elder brother, Ranjit Singh, was married to the suspect's sister, Promila. The suspect had allegedly kidnapped and later murdered the boy.

MOGA
Gang busted:
The Baghapurana police has busted a gang involved in several cases of thefts in the district. Stating this here on Tuesday the SP (Detective), Mr Shiv Kumar, said the teenaged members of the gang used to take jobs in shops and houses and used to commit thefts after a few days' stay. The police has arrested three members of the gang Manjit Singh, Nika Singh and Toni, and recovered stolen goods from them.

PATIALA
PSEB staff:
The PSEB Employees Struggle Committee alleged on Wednesday that the board was privatising new power projects and allotting the work of civil transmission and pilot workshops on contact basis to private companies. Addressing workers on the second day of their three-day dharna in front of the PSEB Head Office here, Mr H.S Minhas and Mr Mukhwant Singh Sidhu, convenors of the committee, said the privatisation move had not only threatened the future of the employees but also made the infrastructure developed by the board for such exercises, redundant.

Case registered: The police has registered a case of murder against Gurbakshish Singh, alias Kaka, a resident of Bharat Nagar here, for allegedly killing his neighbour. According to the FIR, the suspect had an altercation with his neighbour Amrik Singh over a trivial matter and he hit the victim with a lathi. Amrik Singh died at Rajindera Hospital here on Tuesday.

UGC scales: The Punjabi University Syndicate that met here on Tuesday has decided to give UGC recommended pay scales to the staff of Guru Kashi College, Damdama Sahib. According to a press note of the syndicate a high-level university committee had also been formed to visit the college and report about necessary recommendations on other issues related to the staff of the college.top

Felicitated: Mr Mohinderjit Singh Sethi, of Chandigarh was among the four eminent legal luminaries who were felicitated by the National Human Rights Commission in New Delhi a few days ago. He was presented a scroll, a plaque and a shawl.

Concluded: The 'Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Week' concluded at Government High School, Sarangpur, on Thursday. It was organised by the Goitre Control Cell of the Health Department, UT, in collaboration with the Chetna Society.

Paintings: An exhibition of paintings by Deepa Bajaj will be held at SCO 108, Sector 17-C, from Monday.

FARIDABAD
Murdered: Shri Chand, a cart driver from Noida, was found murdered at the house of his nephews here on Tuesday. No arrest has been made, so far.

Three held: The police has arrested three persons for their involvement in a number of crimes in Haryana, UP and Rajasthan. The three have been identified as Sharif, Ash Mohammed and Israel Nasru. Two country made pistols and 12 cartridges were recovered from their possession. Israel and Nasru had kidnapped Mohammed Afaq in Hathin and committed a theft in Rajasthan.

FATEHABAD
Construction work commences:
Work on the Shri Guru Teg Bahadur International Public School at Bigher village in the district began on Tuesday with the DSGMC releasing a sum of Rs 4 crore for the project. The construction work commenced in the presence of members of the DSGMC and of the school managing committee.

Self help group: The Hisar Sirsa Khshetriya Gramin Bank has taken initiative in setting up first ‘‘self help group’’ in the district. The group is christened ‘‘Shree Ganesh Swayam Sahayata Group.’’ Mr Inder Sain Batra, Manager of the Daryapur branch of the bank, said here on Wednesday that the bank would provide loans to such groups on lower rates of interests and would arrange self-employment training to the members from time to time. This would help in improving the economic condition of the members of these groups.

NSS Camp: In order to generate social awareness among rural masses, a 10-day NSS camp was organised at Singhran village near here. According to Mr Kamal Nain Sharma, the Programme Coordinator, 50 NSS volunteers from Senior Secondary School, Mangali, participated in the camp. A blood donation camp was also organised in which the volunteers donated blood. They also created awareness among people about polio eradication.

PANIPAT
Murder case:
Munna Lal, a resident of Badaun district UP was murdered on October 20 and his body was found in the forest of Rissalo village of the district. A case has been registered with the Chandni Bach police station in this connection. The police arrested, Chander Pal, son of the deceased on Wednesday. He confessed having murdered his father.

SIRSA
Suicide bid:
A woman of the local Gobind Nagar locality was admitted to the civil hospital with 90 per cent burns. According to information received here she had allegedly set herself on fire on Tuesday. The father of the woman, however, dismissed the suicide angle being given to the case and alleged that his daughter's in-laws were involved in the incident. He also alleged that her in-laws had been demanding more dowry from her.

Sonepat
Monkey menace: Residents of Sector 14 here will take out a procession here on October 30 to register their protest against monkey menace in the area. Residents will submit a memorandum to the HUDA authorities demanding immediate capturing of the monkeys roaming in the area. They also threatened to take direct action if the authorities failed to take steps to capture the monkeys.

Urged: Representatives of various trade unions urged the Chief Minister, Mr Om Parkash Chautala, on Tuesday to order a probe into the death of a male infant allegedly due to the negligence of a doctor in the ESI dispensary here on Monday. They also threatened to launch an agitation if no action was taken against the erring doctor immediately.

YAMUNANAGAR
Educationist dead:
Chandera Gupta Jain (92), an eminent educationist, died here on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was associated with a number of social organisations. He is survived by two sons and two daughters.

CHAMBA
Traffic blocked:
Activists of the Students Federation of India blocked traffic on Wednesday at the local bus terminus to protest against the apathy of the state government regarding their demands for the appointment of requisite staff of lecturers in the local Government College, hike in fee and bus fare. According to Shobh Nath Yadav, State Vice-President of the SFI, their chain hunger fast entered its third day on Thursday.

Power supply: The Power Grid Corporation has decided to impose power cuts in Chamba region due to the shortage of power generation nowadays. According to a press note of the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB), the power cuts would be from 1 a.m. to 3.30 a.m. and for half an hour during day time between 1 to 2 p.m. and in evenings between 6 to 8 p.m. The cuts would continue till further orders.

Resentment: The Himachal Pradesh Non-Gazetted Employees Federation has expressed resentment over the recent spate of thefts in the government colony at Hardaspura in the town. In a press note issued here on Wednesday, Mr Sat Pal Thakur, district president of the NGO's federation, said the reports in this connection had been lodged with the police but no action had been taken so far.

KANGRA
One killed:
An unidentified person was killed on the spot when the tractor which he was driving overturned at Katlu village near Lambagoan in the district on Wednesday. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

SOLAN
Power cut: Electricity supply to Solan, Deothi, Barog, Salogra, Shamti and solan Brewery areas will remain suspended from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on October 29. The Executive Engineer (Solan division) HPSEB, Mr B.K. Sood, said the shut down had been necessitated because of maintenance and repair work at the 132 KV sub station here. He said power supply to all areas served by Kandaghat subdivision would also remain suspended on November 4.

SUNDERNAGAR
One killed: One person was killed and another injured when a tractor rolled down in a gorge near Jaidevi, 20 km from here. The dead had been identified as Jagdish Ram. The police has registered a case.
