India favourites to wrap up series AHMEDABAD, Oct 28 (PTI) Buoyed by the eight-wicket win in the second encounter to go ahead in the three-match series, India enter the third and final cricket Test starting here tomorrow as favourites to wrap up the series against a New Zealand team which is down and out after many setbacks. A dry, grassless and spinner-friendly track has been laid out for the visitors eager to overturn a 0-1 deficit and square the series. The comprehensive defeat in conditions conducive to spin at Kanpurs Green Park has undermined the confidence of the Kiwis after they had staved off defeat and earned a creditable draw in the first Test at Mohali. The Indians, on the other hand, received a shot in the arm by the emphatic win at Kanpur with a day to spare which was achieved despite the fact that they had to bat last on a crumbling pitch. They, thus, go into the deciding Test at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium in Motera favourites to wrap up the issue and maintain their superb home record since 1986-87. The Indians are expected to go into the final test of the series without any changes to the playing eleven though both skipper Sachin Tendulkar and coach Kapil Dev were non-committal and said they will have a team meeting later in the day before deciding on the issue. Tendulkar was also not interested in being drawn into predicting the nature of the pitch. All he was prepared to say was that it was expected to help the spinners at some time in the match. Pitch curator and former Test left-arm paceman Dhiraj Parsana said the wicket would last for all five days and not become powdery as it had happened when India last played here in a Test and won in dramatic style against South Africa in 1997. In that encounter Tendulkar, in a tremendous show of tactical acumen, brought back into attack pace spearhead Javagal Srinath on a fifth day pitch which was expected to be totally spin-oriented. The gangling fast bowler destroyed South Africa with a match-winning haul of 6 for 21. To Indias advantage both Srinath and his Karnataka mate Anil Kumble have shown fine form in the series and have been the leading wicket-takers from either side, with 14 and 11 scalps to their credit, indicating their dominance. We have relaid the soil. Though the grass has been shaved off, it will grow due to undersoil moisture, Parsana told reporters on the match eve. Kiwi skipper Stephen Fleming, who has led from the front by showing good technique with his extra reach and an open-chested stance against the spinners, said the pitch here looked flat and a lot smoother (sporting fewer cracks) and softer than the one at Kanpur. The Kiwis have fought hard in both the Tests but have also let slip some advantageous situations. Added to their worries is the non-availability of key batsman Craig McMillan, who is returning home after fracturing his right index finger at Kanpur, and the poor form shown by openers Matthew Bell and Mathew Horne. Fleming told reporters there will be a change in their opening combination without mentioning who will be axed. As per indications Bell, who has made just 29 runs in four innings in the series, is to be dropped and Craig Spearman would open the innings with Horne. Coupled with the absence of the injured McMillan, who showed good technique against the spinning ball at Kanpur despite batting with his broken right index finger, it leaves two spots open in the Kiwi line-up. Gary Stead, who has
flown in as replacement for McMillan, is expected to take
his place in the match line-up too while Chris Harris,
who bowls slow medium stuff which can be as frustrating
to the free-stroking Indians as the bowling of Nathan
Astle, might get a look-in in the lower order. |
Asian boxing: Rana bows out TASHKENT, Oct 28 (PTI) Lightweight pugilist Narendra Rana bowed out of the Asian Boxing Championships after a nerve-wracking bout against Filipino Larry Semmillano as Indias challenge at the prestigious event came to an end here today. Rana, Indias last remaining hope after Jitender Kumars controversial loss to Chinese Abudur Rehman was upheld by the technical committee, lost his 60 kg class semifinal match which also cost him a place in the Sydney Olympic Games. At the end of the evenly-fought bout the scoreline read 3-all. Rana paid a heavy price when decision was taken on the basis of individual points of the five judges with the maximum and minimum points discounted. This went against him as the other three judges totalled 23-22 in Semillanos favour bringing the curtain down on Indias campaign at the championships. Rana had gone into the bout expecting to coast to victory over his rival from the Philippines, but his movement and footwork let him down today. The strategy was for Rana to remain at a long range and punch mostly his straight right as points were not being awarded for close range punches or those on the guard or closer to the guard. He implemented the strategy well and we were expecting him to win by a punch or two, but things turned out differently, coach Gurbux Singh Sandhu said. Rana himself was very disappointed at not being able to overcome his opponent despite his greater experience. I was very confident of winning here and competing well in the final but it turned out otherwise, a dejected Rana said. He admitted that his tactical moves today did not pay-off. Being the only remaining boxer for India in the championships put extra pressure on Rana and that weighed him down. I had the entire contingent relying on me for qualifying from here and I failed to deliver the goods. That is very disappointing, said Rana. Ranas loss also brought to an end the Indian campaign for Olympic qualification from here. We had expected at least one boxer to qualify from here but after Jitenders bout yesterday the morale of the team was down and this result is extremely disappointing, the national coach said. However, he expressed confidence that the boys would bounce back at the next two qualifying tournaments in Seoul and Bangkok next year. In other semifinal action, Dilshod Yuldashev of Uzbekistan took his appointed place in the final of the 48 kg category against Punnon Suba of Thailand. Dilshod overcame Yang Xiangzhong of China 7-3 while Suba, a world ranked pugilist, beat Danilo Levle of the Philippines 13-6. The bantamweight final,
where Indias Ng Dingko Singh would have been a
strong contender, will be contested by Alisher Rahimov of
Uzbekistan and Kadayev Talaibek of Kyrgystan. |
BCCI annoyed with Kapil MUMBAI, Oct 28 (UNI) Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Jaywant Lele has taken serious view of Indian coach Kapil Dev overruling his directive of not inviting medium pacers Ajit Agarkar and Harvinder Sodhi and all three may pay for it. Kapil yesterday invited Ajit Agarkar and Harvinder Sodhi to bowl at the Indians in nets as preparation for the third and final Test at Ahmedabad from tomorrow. Agarkar and Sodhi are aware that the Indian team for the Australia is to be picked during the Test. However, in his keeness to impress the selectors Agarkar has violated a clear instruction from Mr Lele of not proceeding to Ahmedabad. Mr Lele was quoted as saying that he had specifically informed Agarkar to first play some local matches which he had not and instead of playing and proving his fitness in Times Shield in Mumbai he has disobeyed and so has Kapil. According to Mr Lele he had refused permission to have any extra player at Ahmedabad when Kapil had asked for it. He said Kapil had undermined his authority and this would be reported to the BCCI president for appropriate action even if Agarkar gets fitness certificate from Kapil. The BCCI will not take any cognisance of that, Mr Lele warned. He also did not agree on
Kapils version that the Indian team was short of
practice bowlers and added that there were plenty of
local lads for that purpose. |
Agassi triumphs; Kafelnikov out STUTTGART, Oct 28 (DPA) World number 1 Andre Agassi had a winning start into the quest of ending Europes dominance at the $ 2.45-million Eurocard Open in the form of a 6-2, 6-4 second-round win over Australian Mark Philippoussis. Agassi played vintage tennis and triumphed in 62 minutes with his seventh ace. The Las Vegas resident was rock-solid on serve and did not allow Philippoussis one break point. Philippoussis, by contrast, had 11 aces, but dropped serve three times. Agassi, whose new girlfriend, retired German star Steffi Graf, arrived early in the first set amid thunderous applause from the fans, aims to become the first non-European to win the Super-9 event in its 10th edition. I saw the ball well, felt good and served well. I cant complain, said the French Open and US Open winner Agassi. The 1998 runner-up and second seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov did not fare so well on Wednesday and crashed out 6-3, 6-3 in 83 minutes to Argentinas Mariano Zabaleta in the second round. Number 10 seed Tim Henman shared Kafelnikovs fate when the Briton was demolished 6-3, 6-1, by Czech Daniel Vacek. Also ousted were 14 seed Cedric Pioline and number 15 Karol Kucera. In other action, third
seed Todd Martin routed Fabrice Santoro 6-4, 6-2. The
fourth-seeded Gustavo Kuerten won the last five games
from 3-1 down in the final set for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3
comeback win over Albert Costa. |
Irina Brar wrests lead CHANDIGARH, Oct 28 Irina Brar turned 16 today. And she celebrated her birthday in grand style, playing a fabulous round of two over par 74 to wrest the lead from Parnita Garewal on the penultimate day of the seventh Punjab Open Amateur Ladies Golf Tournament here today. Parnita Garewal and Guneet Raikhy played identical rounds of 6 over part 78. The stage is now set for a cliff-hanger on the final day. From the outset Irina Brar seemed resolute in putting her stamp on the day making an immaculate string of 8 pars and then capping them with a birdie on the ninth to be one under at the turn. Parnita and Guneet had by then dropped 3 and 2 shots, respectively, despite making their share of birdies as well. Parnita had a disastrous triple bogey on the par-3 third hole which accounted for her deficit and Guneet began the day with a double bogey. Her two birdies on the fifth and sixth were offset by bogeys on the fourth and ninth. Irina Brar continued to play a dream round till the spell was broken by her first bogey on the 15th. By then she had a lead of 4 and 5 strokes over Guneet and Parnita, respectively. Two more bogeys on the 17th and 18th from missed putts, however, saw her finish just ahead of Parnita who went on to finish steadily with 3 pars in the closing holes while Guneet dropped a shot on the 16th. In the silver division Taran Simran Singh took a firm grip on the first position with Harinder Sandhu and Sheena Sekhon trailing 11 strokes behind. Pikka P. HGA striving to set up golf
academy CHANDIGARH, Oct 28 While the top pros of Asia are vying for the Hero Honda Cup at the Delhi Golf Club, the Haryana Golf Association has taken it upon itself the task of producing a Tiger Woods in this country. Together we can do it and we will, says a confident Mr P K Chaudhery, president of the Association and an avid golfer himself. All pros - even Tiger Woods were amateurs to begin with that is the state where the foundation is laid. It is therefore at this grassroot level that we are putting our energies. There is no dearth of talent in India, it is only being wasted for lack of attention and inputs at the proper level says Mr Chaudhery. Whereas the total pro-purse of the Indian Professional Golf Tour is around Rs 2 crores, virtually nothing is being spent on rearing up those young amateurs who have the potential to become top pros later on, chips in Mr Ajai Johl, the spokesperson of the association - who was himself one of the talented golfers of his time but had to leave the game to pursue a profession other than golf because of lack of an adequate support structure. The Haryana Golf Association has taken up with the Government of Haryana the issue of allotment of land to set up a golf academy and according to Mr Chaudhery, they are talking to one of the best teaching pros in the world to set up this facility and run it. Once set up, the academy will produce world class golfers. The academy will have the latest equipment, and will lay emphasis on the allround development of players improvement of their playing techniques, their physical and mental conditioning and providing enough playing exposure. Players will be exposed to playing all over the world in different playing conditions. The HGA has tied up with three golf courses in the states of New Jersey ( Holly Hills) North Carolina (Highland Hills) and West Virginia (Locust Hill) , in the USA. Players with potential shall be sponsored to play on these golf courses to give them international exposure. To share their views
with like minded people, the Haryana Golf Association is
organising, the Haryana Golf Association Classic
Invitational Tournament at the Classic Golf Resort,
Gurgaon on October 29. Players from all over north India
who can contribute by way of ideas and suggestions have
been invited to participate in this event. The tournament
is being played as a Stableford event over 18 holes. |

Feroz Ali lone Indian on top NEW DELHI, Oct 28 Feroz Ali was the lone Indian among three others-Scott Taylor (USA), Chris Williams (England) and Anthony Kang (Korea) on top with four under 69 on the opening day of the four-round third $ 200,000 Hero Honda Masters at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) course here today. Mukesh, Jyoti Randhawa, S S P Chowrasia (all Indians) and Rafael Ponce (Ecuador) fired three under 69 and were placed a stroke behind the leaders in the competition which is expected to be closely fought on the next three days. The favourite and title-aspirant Jeev Milkha Singh had an acute problem with his club and could finish very low at 38th place along with Gaurav Ghei, Ali Sher and host of others with two over par 74. Despite indifferent score on the opening day, Jeev looked cheerful and optimistic for a come-back as the game progresses. Tomorrow will be another day and I shall be able to play much better with no trouble with any club, said Jeev. His father Milkha Singh also wore a very sanguine hope of his sons recovery in the next three days. Taylor had three birdies and two bogeys in the first nine. But he rose to play an unblemished back nine to finish three under 36. His aggregate of four under 68 saw him stay on top with three others. Considering fairways and greens in impeccable conditions, Taylor said that he was mighty pleased with changes made on holes 4th and 14th. I think, the club authorities have done a great restructuring job, said Taylor, adding: The holes have not lost their character and are blending well. The undulation on the 4th has made it a tougher putting surface, according to Taylor. Feroz Ali played a consistent game throughout. He was out in 34 and was also home in identical score. I am not much happy with the manner in which I played my opening round, said Feroz Ali, adding: I should have exploited the par-5s. He could make birdie on only one of them. I missed as many as 10 greens in regulation and was saved by the fact that I completed the round in 27 putts, said Feroz Ali adding: I enjoyed playing with Jeev after he had joined the European PGA Tour. Williams and Kang found little problem with their driving despite occasional gush of heavy breeze which blew across the course. Tall and stocky Kang said that he had learnt to take conditions in his stride. Williams also looked happy with the course and conditions of the course. Jeev Milkha Singh finished his first nine in 37 and another also in the same score. Jeev was candid in saying that he had a very poor first round. To make it worse, I lost my two-iron, said Jeev, adding: The glue came off and the shaft was spinning thus forcing my shots way right. Jeev said that he realised this on the 6th and even after changing the club, he was playing his shots tentatively. The good thing is that I finished with birdies on the 17th and the 18th, he said. Young Chowrasia played superbly well. To get three under 69 in a galaxy of stars, Indian and foreign, was an achievement for his player of his stature. He had finished runner-up in the Indian Open at Calcutta last year. Scores: Scot Taylor(USA), Feroz Ali, Chris Williams (Eng) and Anthony Kang-68. Mukesh Kumar, Jyoti
Randhawa, Chowrasia (all Indians) and Rafael Ponce
(Ecu)-69, Sammy Danniels (RSA), Arjun Atwal and Rodrigo

Healy holds the world record for Test match dismissals with 395 in 119 Tests, but he has suffered from poor form and injuries in recent seasons and his place in the team has come under increasing scrutiny. He had been expected to play one final Test match against Pakistan in November to try and reach 400 dismissals at Gabba ground in Brisbane, but the 35-year-old said he no longer enjoyed the game. I am retiring because Ive had enough. My wicketkeepings fine, its the batting thats been the problem, Healy told a news conference. A
