FATEHGARH SAHIB
Hindu Marriage Act:
A Lok Adalat was organised by Mr A.N. Jindal, Additional District and Sessions Judge here on Monday. Twentyone cases related to the Hindu Marriage Act were put up and compensation worth Rs 24,500 was awarded on the occasion. Whereas Rs 26,50,000 was claimed by other parties. Mr Jindal said such adalats had developed a concept of compromise and people had started taking benefit from it.

GURDASPUR
Arrested:
The police on Tuesday arrested Shabir Ahmad and Javaid Hussain of Jammu and Kashmir and recovered 8,000 bats worth Rs 20 lakh after intercepting four trucks. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, the bats were to be sold at a premium price in Punjab. A case has been registered against the accused.

LUDHIANA
Arrested:
The police has arrested Balraj Gupta for his alleged involvement in selling off a vehicle financed by a finance company on a hire-purchase basis. The accused had provided forged documents regarding the proof of permanent address and later on sold the vehicle. A case under Sections 406, 420 and 120-B of the IPC, has been registered against the accused.
Elected:

NAWANSHAHR
Blood donation camp:
The District Bar Association in collaboration with the local Blood Donor's Council organised a blood donation camp here on Monday. The camp was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, Dr Roshan Sunkaria. Mr J.K. Dutta, President of the association, said, as many as 60 units of blood were collected on the occasion.
School building:
Ms Surjit Kaur Sandhu, Education Secretary, Punjab, visited Khatkar Kalan village on Monday and reviewed the progress of the construction work of Adarsh school. She said Rs 3 crore would be spent on the school building which included 55 rooms, auditorium, labs, library and computer and craft rooms. In the first phase Rs 50 lakh was being spent on the construction of 12 rooms. A Canada-based organisation would provide employment oriented education to rural children. The panchayats of Khatkar Kalan, Bhootan and Thandian villages had provided 24 acres of land to the school.

SANGRUR
Poppy husk:
The Amargarh police in Dhuri subdivision of the district arrested eight persons and seized 1,800 kg of poppy husk from their possession. According to the district police chief, Mr Arpit Shukla, these persons used to smuggle poppy husk from Rajasthan and sell it in the different parts of the state.

Intra-college function: On the second day of 'Plexus-99', a four-day intra-college function at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, various competitions like story writing, cartoon making and dumb charades were held under the supervision of the Chief Coordinator, Dr C.S. Gautam. The following are the results of various competitions: Antakshri — Lokesh and Prabhdeep (1); Dinkar and Poonam (2); dumb charades — Monika, Meenakshi, Deepika and Pooja (1); Geetinder, Maninder, Pooja and Kamal (2); story writing — Manni (1); Mili Bhardwaj (2); mehndi competition — Ridhi (1); Sonu and Himani (2); cartoon making —Jatinder Pal (1); Mili Bhardwaj (2).
Meeting held: A meeting of the Southern Sectors Welfare Federation was held here on Sunday. At the meeting, political parties were criticised for not taking up issues concerning the southern sectors which had not been attended to for the past several years.
Elected: The following have been elected the office-bearers of the Auditor's Association of the Local Audit Department of the Chandigarh Administration: President — Mr M.M. Music workshop: Payal Musical Club, Sector 46, will organise a workshop on folk music at Tagore Theatre from September 11. The workshop will be conducted by folk exponent and writer, C.S. Cindra. The workshop, according to the President of the club, Mr Y.S. Chouhan, will be aimed at preserving folk music and imparting knowledge of its intricacies to participants. Popular folk songs will also be taught to participants. A show will be held at Tagore Theatre at the end of the workshop.
AIDS awareness: The International Association of Lions Club District 321-F of Chandigarh Region, with the help of the Chandigarh Administration and in collaboration with the AIDS Control Society, Chandigarh, organised an AIDS Awareness Camp today at Colony No 5. Dr Rajesh Jain, skin specialist of the PGI, Dr Rajni Saini and their team examined 152 patients out of which, 10 samples were drawn for STD/RTI tests. Four cases of skin disease and five cases of tuberculosis were also detected and suspected cases were referred to General Hospital, Sector 16. The camp was inaugurated by Dr N.K. Sharma and Dr Amrit Walia.
Seminar held: A seminar on 'Newer Insights in the Management and Prevention of Heart Attacks' was held on August 28 at a hotel in Sector 22. It was organised under the chairmanship of Dr Jagmohan Verma, Head of Department of Cardiology in the PGI. A guest lecture was delivered by Prof H.S. Wasir, Chief of Cardiology and Medical Director of Batra Hospital in New Delhi. Emphasis was laid on recent revolutionary findings on endothelium, the inner lining of blood vessels, and its dysfunctions. Prof Wasir said that high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and smoking could injure the endothelium.

KURUKSHETRA
Student demonstration:
Second and third-year students of the local Regional Engineering College demonstrated in front of the Administrative Block of the college here on Monday to protest against fee-hike. They alleged that although the Principal had listened to their demands, yet he had left the college without giving a satisfactory reply to them. However, the Principal, Dr N.P. Mehta, said student representatives had met him at 3.30 p.m. and all problems had been amicably resolved. The students would attend their classes from Tuesday onwards, he added.

PANIPAT
Agitation deferred:
The Coordination Committee of the National Fertiliser Employees Union has deferred the relay fast which was scheduled to start from August 27 to September 4. Mr Chand Ram, President of the local union, said the agitation had been deferred due to impending negotiations with the management in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

SONEPAT
Dead:
Dr C.Vassraj, a veteran journalist and the Chief Editor of a weekly Nar Kesri died here on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was associated with a number of social and religious organisations.
Camp: Fortyone persons donated blood at a camp organised by the Jain Milan, the Mahila Jain Milan and the District Red Cross Society here on Monday. Mr Harish Chander Jain, SDM, inaugurated the camp.
Two held: The Gohana police has launched a campaign against antisocial elements and arrested two persons who were found to be in the possession of 2 kg of charas worth thousands of rupees during a nakabandi. The SSP, Mr K. Selvraj, told mediapersons here on Tuesday that the arrested persons had been identified as Dharam Vir of Chhichhrana village and Satish of Madina village. Their accomplice Raju of Chhichhrana village, however, managed to escape and hunt was on to apprehend him.

SIRSA
Telephone subscribers:
Resentment prevails among residents of Odhan village and adjoining areas against the Telecom Department as telephones were out of order for past several days. Despite repeated complaints made to the authorities concerned, no action had been taken so far. Employees of the local Telephone Exchange said the Electricity Department was unable to operate the exchange due to low voltage.

Manhandled:
A young woman along with her children was manhandled by a gang of four youths in the vicinity of a Jawalamukhi shrine on Monday. A case has been registered with the police.

HAMIRPUR
Snag rectified:
Telecom services that had crippled the district for the past three days were restored on Monday. The system had developed a snag due to some technical defects in the main telephone exchange of the district.

MANALI
NCC camp:
An 11-day NCC annual training camp (Air Force and Army) under the commandant Mr A.C. Vimal has been in progress at Palchan village, 9 km from here, from August 24. The camp commandant said as many as 288 cadets from various institutions were being imparted NCC training. He said cadets were also involved in social services like blood donation, cleanliness and sapling plantation drives.

SOLAN
Ban imposed:
The District Magistrate, Mr R.D. Dhiman, has banned, with immediate effect, the carrying of fire arms and ammunitions under Section 144 of the Cr. P.C. by persons other than from defence forces and those belonging to the police and paramilitary forces throughout the district till October 10.
