Two arrested in suicide case

CHANDIGARH, Sept 2 — The police today arrested two persons — Mona and her husband Ashu Jindal — in connection with the Meenakshi suicide case.

Meenakshi had allegedly committed suicide following harassment by her in-laws for bringing inadequate dowry.

Mona is the sister-in-law of the deceased. The police is also on the lookout for Rajiv Shukla, husband of the deceased, and Satpal and Raj Rani Singla, her in-laws.

According to police sources, 24-year-old Meenakshi was married on May 10. She had been reportedly sent back to her parents' house to bring the balance amount that had not been given at the time of the marriage.

Following a phone call from her husband, requesting for a meeting, she left her house at about 4.30 p.m. on August 18. She was last seen vomiting near the Sector 32\33 roundabout and was rushed to the GMCH in Sector 32 . She later breathed her last.

A case under Sections 304-B, 406, 498-A and 120-B of the IPC stands registered at the Sector 34 police station.

Woman cheated
Ms Pushpa of Sector 40 has reported to the police that she was cheated by a woman and her male companion on the pretext of doubling her money. They cheated her of Rs 20,000, besides her gold ornaments. A case under Sections 420\34 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 30 police station.

False affidavit
The police has registered a case against Sarota Devi of Attawa village for submitting a false affidavit to get a booth allotted to her. A case under Section 420 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 17 police station.

Liquor seized
The police has nabbed Jagdev Singh and Pal Singh for possessing 12 bottles each of whisky. Similarly, Devi Dayal and Bansi Lal have been arrested for possessing 99 pouches of illicit liquor. A case under Section 61-14 of the Excise Act has been registered.

Bicycles recovered
The police has arrested Nirmal Singh for stealing a bicycle belonging to Kuldip Singh of Hallo Majra. Three other stolen bicycles have been been recovered from him. Further investigations are on.

Assaulted
Mr Vikas of Sector 20-C has reported to the police that he was assaulted by Parmod, Rohini, Bunty and another person in the Sector 30-C market. The assailants later fled on scooters. A case under Sections 324\506\34 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 19 police station.

Six held
Three persons have been arrested for roaming under suspicious circumstances. Two persons have been arrested for creating nuisance while under the influence of liquor. Ram Pal of Palsora colony has been arrested in a case registered under Sections 279\304-A of the IPC at the Mani Majra police station.

KALKA

House burgled
A case under Sections 455 and 380 of the IPC has been registered at the Kalka police station on the complaint of Ms Neelam Kumari. She alleged that burglars broke into her house (285) in Housing Board Colony, while she and her husband were away on duty during the day.

Injured
Mr Gurpinder Singh of Manakpur has registered a complaint of rash and negligent driving against Pawan Kumar with the Chandi Mandir police station. In the accident, Gurpinder Singh's father was seriously injured. The driver fled from the scene. A case under Sections 279 and 337 of the IPC has been registered.

Police clueless
The police remains clueless in the murder case of a 25-year-old labourer from Uttar Pradesh. His body was found with head severed at the nursery in Phase I yesterday.

The police has registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC. Personal enmity seemed to be the motive of the crime.Back

Vegetable prices fluctuate

CHANDIGARH, Sept 2— The prices of a number of commonly used vegetables have witnessed fluctuation in the local market during the past four days.

During a survey of the local market it was observed that beans had become costly during this period. A kg of the vegetable, priced at Rs 20 just two or three days back, could be purchased today for Rs 24. The wholesale price has increased from Rs 80 to Rs 100 per 5 kg.

On the other hand the prices of tomato, gourd and lady's finger have come down during this period. A kg of tomato, priced between Rs 18 and Rs 20 two days ago, could be purchased today for Rs 15. The wholesale price of the vegetable has come down from Rs 80 to Rs 60 per 5 kg during this period.

Similarly, a kg of gourd, available for Rs 12 four days ago, could be purchased today for Rs 10 in the retail market, while the wholesale price has come down from Rs 50 to Rs 40 per 5 kg. The same was the case with lady's finger, as a kg of it, priced at Rs 20 a kg three days back, was available today for Rs 16. The wholesale price of the vegetable has come down from Rs 80 to Rs 60 per 5 kg.

The price of lemon has also dipped during this period. A kg of the vegetable, priced at Rs 40 during last week, could be purchased today for Rs 32. In the wholesale market, the price has come down from Rs 170 to Rs 130 per 5 kg. According to sources, the prices have come down due to higher arrivals during this period.

There was no change in the price of a number of vegetables. A kg of cauliflower was still priced at Rs 30 in retail and for Rs 130 per 5 kg in wholesale during this period, while peas could be purchased for Rs 40 a kg. Similarly, one could purchase a kg of 'tori' for Rs 20 and the same quantity of brinjal could be had for Rs 16 a kg in retail and for Rs 60 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.

Similarly, garlic and ginger were priced at Rs 48 a kg in retail and for Rs 200 per 5 kg in the wholesale market. One could purchase a kg of squashgourd for Rs 24 in retail and for Rs 100 per 5 kg in the wholesale market. As usual the prices of potato and onion were stable at Rs 5 and Rs 10 a kg, respectively.Back

 


SGFI selects 5 city tennis players

CHANDIGARH, Sept 2 — Five city tennis players, including two girls, have been included in the sixteen probables selected by the Schools Games Federation Of India during the two-day trials concluded on September 1 at SAI-NS-NIS Patiala. The boys are Akshay Vishal Rao, Sunil Kumar and Sarbrinder Singh and the girls are Harsimran Kaur Bedi and Mallika Malhotra. All are regular trainees at the CLTA complex, sector 10.

The final selection for four boys and equal number of girls will be made after a ten-day coaching camp. The team will take part in the first Asian Schools Tennis Championship (under 18 years) to be hosted by the Asian Schools Games Federation at Jakarta (Indonesia) from September 21 to 28.

As most of them have already performed well in various tournaments in the country. Akshay Vishal Rao and Sunil Kumar are the hopes of the Indian junior team and they have been ranked in the top five of the country in their age group. Harsimran Kaur too is a winner of many major tournaments. She has participated in the ITF and other circuit tournaments and has good AITA points.

In the trials at Patiala, players from all over India took part.

Shivalik soccer

Government High School, Sector 37; Government Model High School, Sector 38; and Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, won their respective matches by beating Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, 1-0; Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 15, 4-2; and St John's School, Sector 26, 5-2; respectively, in the Shivalik Football Trophy for boys under the age of 14 being played here.

The semi-finals will be played between St Soldier's School, Sector 28, and Government High School, Sector 37, at 8.30 am and Government Model High School, Sector 38, and Shivalik Public School, Sector 41.

Super league

Youngsters Club and Audit Haryana surged ahead by winning their matches against City Football Club, 4-0, and City Cops Club, 3-1, respectively, on the third day of the Chandigarh Super League Soccer in progress here at the Sector 17 football stadium today.

In the first match between Youngsters Club and City Club, the former played brilliantly from the beginning. Vinay Kanwar, in the 28th minute of the match, gave a pass to right out Vishal whose powerful shot beat the rival goalkeeper and put the first goal on the scoreboard. After two minutes, Gurminder Singh of Youngsters Club scored another goal. The 2-0 lead was maintained till the end of the first half.

In the second half, Sachin of Youngsters Club scored the third goal for his team in the 40th minute. The 4th goal was scored by Gurminder Singh in the 70th minute and ultimately, Youngsters Club won, 4-0.

The second league match played between Audit Haryana and City Cops Club was a good exhibition of soccer for spectators. Munish of City Cops Club scored the first goal in the 20th minute. Audit Haryana player, Rakesh Sharma, scored the first goal for his team in the 28th minute, while Shiv Onkar scored the second in the 34th minute. At half time, Audit Haryana led, 2-1.

In the second half, Sanjiv of Audit Haryana scored the third goal in the closing minutes of the game. Finally, Audit Haryana won, 3-1.

Best wrestler

Sabal Malhan of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, Chandigarh, was declared the best wrestler for the year 1999-2000, in the UT Inter-School Wrestling Tournament. He also won a gold medal in the 48-kg category in the championship.

Aman Nat Golf begins today

CHANDIGARH, Sept 2 — The Aman Nat Memorial Junior and Subjunior Golf Tournament will be held at the Chandigarh Golf Club on September 3 and 4.

The tournament has become a part of the annual calendar of the club and is developing into an important event for the local golf talent.

The tournament is held in memory of Aman Nat who was an excellent sportsman and an all-round athlete who died at the age of 16, according to Dr G.S. Kochhar, Chairman, Media and Publicity, Chandigarh Golf Club.

The tournament will be held in three categories: junior (below 18), subjunior (below 15) and subjunior (below 10).Back
