Medical camp:
The local Medical and Eye Relief Society organised a free eye operation camp at Nangli village on Wednesday. The President of the society, Mr V.P. Khindry, said as many as 200 patients were examined and 12 persons operated by Dr Rohit Om Parkash.
Association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Spring Gems Association: president — Mr Rahul Khanna and secretary — Mr Jagriti Arora.
Teachers’ demand: A meeting of the Government College Lecturers Union was held here on Wednesday and urged the state government to disburse the arrears of the new pay scales between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 1998. The union also demanded that the retirement age of the lecturers should be on a par with their counterparts in the private colleges.

Draft presented:
Lt-Gen Kamal Davar, GoC, Vajra Corps, received a draft for Rs 53,200 from the local Bharat Vikas Parishad (Chetna) for the Army Welfare Fund somewhere in the western sector on Wednesday.

Voter's I-card: Dr N.C. Goel, a resident of Sector 21, was named as N.C. Nandwani in the voter's I-card supplied in 1996. Nandwani happens to be the surname of a neighbour of his. His wife and son, however, have been named Goel. "I was in an embarrassing position while voting," he said. When the revision of the voters' list took place earlier this year, he submitted the required documents for a change in the name on the card. But, even the current list calls him A.C. Nandwani.
Hindi fortnight: The office of the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner is celebrating 'Hindi fortnight' from September 1 to 15. According to a press note issued here on Thursday, various competitions on the use of Hindi in the official work, besides workshops, will be the highlights of the fortnight. The fortnight would conclude with a prize distribution ceremony and cultural programme on September 15, the press note added.
Punjabi musical: The Punjab Sangeet Natak Aakdemi on Thursday presented a musical Punjabi play 'Heer Ranjha' at Punjab Kala Bhavan. The play based on Warris Shah's 'Heer' was staged by the Punjab Arts International. Directed by Narinder Nindi and scripted by Bhag Singh, the 45-minute play had a cast of 25 characters. The music was given by Joginder Ghanot and Garib Das, and the playback singers included Anil, Satnam Mullanpuri and Rajinder Kumar. The lead roles of Heer and Ranjha were played by Meenu Mawi and Jaswinder Singh. Others in the cast included Harinder Pal as Qaidon and Rupi as the father of Heer.
JD (Secular) meeting: A meeting of the Political Affairs Committee of the Janata Dal (Secular) of the UT was held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Mr Rattan Singh Baghi, Convener of the Janata Dal (secular) of the UT. The present political situation in the country was discussed in the meeting which was attended by Mr Rajendra Mohan Kashyap, Mr Narinder Puri, Mr Ashok Nirdosh and Mr Lashkar Singh.
Education programme: On the second day of the 'Parent Nutrition Education Programme' organised by the Dietetics Department of Government Medical College Hospital, Sector 32, at Government Institute for Mentally Retarded Children (GIMRC), Sector 32, three films on malnutrition, anaemia and diarrhoea were shown to parents of mentally retarded children. Later, six separate diet clinics were set up by Chief Dietician, Ms Manju Mathur.
Medical camp: The SAS Nagar branch of the State bank of India organised a medical check-up camp for pensioners and senior citizens on Wednesday in which about 150 persons were examined.
Training programme: The Servants of the People Society conducted a training programme on 'Mental Health and Drug Abuse in School Children' for government school teachers on Thursday. The programme was conducted by Drug Awareness and Counselling Centres, in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry of the PGI. The main speakers were Dr Savita Malhotra, Dr Adarsh Kohli and Dr Pramod Kumar.

HISAR
Assaulted:
The Jind police has registered a case under Sections 323, 506, 148 and 149 of the IPC against a former Union Minister Mr Jai Prakash, and others for allegedly assaulting Mr Sultan Singh, a supporter of Mr Surender Singh Barwala, candidate from the local parliamentary constituency.
Looted: Three car-borne miscreants allegedly looted Rs 1.28 lakh from the Principal of Senior Secondary School in Asrawan village at gunpoint near Kalirwan village, 30 km from here, on Wednesday. The Principal, Mr Om Prakash Kulharia, along with his associate was returning to the school after withdrawing staff salary when he was looted. A case has been registered but no arrest has been made so far.

Poppy husk:
The Dabwali police has arrested two women under Sections 15,16,61 and 85 of the NDPS Act and seized 10 kg of poppy husk from their possession.

SONEPAT
Liquor Smuggling:
The city police has arrested three persons and seized as many as 400 liquor pouches from their possession. Mr K. Selvraj SSP, said here on Thursday that the arrested persons had been identified as Rattan Singh, Ram Niwas and Ravi Kumar, all residents of Mandora village. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against the culprits.

Arms seized: The Butana police arrested Anil of Butana Kundu village following a recovery of an unlicensed country-made pistol from his possession here on Thursday. A case under the Indian Arms Act has been registered against him.
