In-laws of dowry victim held

CHANDIGARH, Sept 3 — The police has arrested the in-laws of a woman who allegedly committed suicide following ill-treatment by them.

According to police sources, Mr Sukhdev Singh of Cheema village in Sangrur district, lodged a complaint that his daughter Rani was harassed by her husband and in-laws for bringing inadequate dowry. She had reportedly been sent to him many times for getting more money.

Rani was married in 1996 to Burail resident Mohan Singh. Problems started immediately after the marriage. While some of the demands were met over the years, the complainant could not meet them anymore.

Allegedly unable to bear with the harassment and ill-treatment meted out to her, she committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance. She was shifted to the Sector 32 hospital where she breathed her last.

A case under Sections 304-B, 406, 498-A and 34 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

The accused — Mohan Singh (husband), Surjit Kaur and Ranbir Singh (parents-in-law) and Bobby (sister-in-law) — have been arrested.

Documents misplaced
Mrs Sukhwinder Kaur, a resident of Sector 21, reported to the police that S.C. Grover, his wife Pushpinder, residents of Sector 34, entered her house while she was away to England. Some important documents and household goods have been misplaced.

A case under Sections 448 and 451 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

Ornaments stolen
Mr Ram Murti, a resident of Sector 20, reported to the police that some gold ornaments and household goods have been stolen from his house. A case under Section 380 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 19 police station.

SAS NAGAR

House burgled
Burglars broke in to a house in Mataur village in the wee hours of this morning and decamped with gold jewellery and some electronic goods. The occupant of the house, Mr Upkar Singh, was sleeping outside the house.

The owner of the house, who woke up on hearing the noise of the burglars, tried to get hold of them. On raising the alarm some of the villagers tried to catch hold of the thieves but they managed to escape.

It took two hours for the police to reach the site.

Liquor seized
Nine bottles of liquor were seized from Piara Singh, a resident of Phase 6 here. A case under the Excise Act has been registered by the police.

Punjabi play presented

CHANDIGARH, Sept 3 — The Suchetak Rangmarch, SAS Nagar, a local theatre group presented Asghar Wajhat's Punjabi play, 'Inna Di Awaz,' at the Tagore Theatre, today evening. Translated by Amarjit Chandan in the early 80s this popular play that revolves around the psyche of the ruler and the ruled, was directed by Anita and Raman Dhillon, two actresses of the city stage.

Staged at a time when the campaigns for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections are at their peak, 'Inna Di Awaz' went down very well with the audience. This coupled with the fact that a committed set of city artistes staged today's play, the presentation was both interesting and entertaining.

The presence of Sahib Singh as the Sultan and Anita as the queen on the stage was a delight as usual. Gurpreet Waraich, as Inna the slave, also did full justice to the role of a melodious simpleton turning into a powerful Wazir.Back

Vegetable prices increase

SAS NAGAR, Sept 3 — The prices of a number of commonly used vegetables have shown an increase over the past few days with carrot, priced at Rs 35 a kg, being the costliest item in the local markets. It was followed by capsicum at Rs 30 a kg, which a few days back was being sold at Rs 20 a kg in the Phase 5 market. However, the prices of certain vegetables has registered little variation.

Beans being sold for Rs 15 a kg were cheaper as compared to its price last week. Last week a vendor in the Phase 7 market was selling the vegetable for Rs 20 a kg.

Two qualities of onion was available in the local markets. While the better quality of the vegetable was available at Rs 10 a kg, a cheaper quality of the vegetable was being sold for Rs 8 a kg. Potato, being sold at Rs 3 a kg was another commonly used vegetable whose price has remained stable during the past few days.

In the Phase 4 market tomato was being sold by a vendor for Rs 12 a kg. Peas was yet another vegetable which has registered an increase in its price. Today the vegetable was being sold for Rs 30 a kg as compared to its price last week — Rs 20 a kg. Cabbage was being sold at Rs 10 a kg.

Another commonly used vegetable, lemon was available for Rs 30 a kg. Bittergourd, priced at Rs 15 a kg was another vegetable which had registered little variation in its price. Cucumber was being sold at Rs 10 a kg in the Phase X market. Gourd and brinjal was priced at Rs 5 a kg and Rs 8 a kg, respectively.Back

 


Jasmeen shoots down national record

Chandigarh, Sept 3 — Jasmeen Brar shot a new national record in the air rifle (senior) event by scoring 342 points out of 400 in the Ropar Rifle Shooting Championship which was conducted at Patiali ki Rao ranges in Sector 25 here today. In all, 18 shooters took part in the meet.

Mr B.K. Bassi, Chief Engineer of the PSIEC and President of the Ropar Rifle Shooting Association, gave away the prizes.

Jasmeen was the star of the day as she got four gold medals, in the air rifle (NR) senior and junior, air pistol (NR) senior and junior women's events. Jasmeen Brar among women and Jatin Kukreja of St Stephen's School, Sector 45, among men, were declared the best shooters of the competition.

Results: Air rifle (NR) senior men — Jatin Kukreja 1, (295/400); Gurparnit Sekhon 2, Ripjit Singh 3; junior men — Jatin Kukreja 1, (295/400); Gurparnit 2, Ripjit 3.

Badminton trials

The Chandigarh State Ranking-cum-selection trials badminton tournament for boys and girls will be held from September 16 to 19 at the Sector 42 indoor badminton hall, according to Mr M.C. Sethi, President of the Chandigarh Badminton Association and the organiser of this four-day meet.

The city team in juniors' and seniors' sections (men and women) for the North Zone Inter State Badminton Championships to be held at Jammu in the last week of this month will also be chosen after these trials.

Moreover, selection for the Mini (under-13) and Sub Junior (Under-16) National Badminton Championships to be held at Vijayawada (AP) from November 1 to 4 will also be made after these trials.

The selected trainees will undergo a three-week training camp at the Panjab University indoor hall, prior to their participation in this championship. This was said by Mr T.P.S. Puri, Secretary of the CBA. The camp will be held under the supervision of Mr Surinder Mahajan, badminton coach at PU.

The performance in these trials and in the proposed UT State Badminton Championship to be held in November this year will determine rankings of these players.

Entries for the above trials-cum-rankings tournament close with Mr S. Mahajan at the PU indoor hall or Mr R. Tuli at the Sector 42 badminton centre or Ms Promila at the Home Science College centre, daily in the evening, till September 14.

Shivalik Trophy

St Soldier's School and Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, will take on each other in the final of the under-14 boys' football tournament for the Shivalik Trophy being played here today at the Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 23.

In the first semi-final here, St Soldier's School had to face a tough challenge from Government High School, Sector 37, in a tie-breaker as both teams could not score any goal in the stipulated period.

In the tie-breaker, Sanjay, Mandeep and Vikram scored one goal each for the winners, while Pardeep and Rajinder scored one goal each for the losers.

In the second semi-final, Shivalik Public School won by a solitary goal as they defeated Government Model High School, Sector 38. Gagandeep of the SPS was the star for the team and the goal which he scored in last three minutes of the match was the decider.

The finals will be played on September 7 at 4.30 pm in Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23.

District cricket

The Punjab State Inter-district Cricket Championship (under-19 years) will be held in the last week of this month. The Mohali Cricket Association has decided to hold trials for the selection of under-19-age-group players who will represent the association. The trials will be held on September 5 at 'C' ground of the PCA stadium in SAS Nagar. Domiciled residents of SAS Nagar are eligible to attend the trials and should bring along with them, their original birth certificates.

League champions

Youngsters Club retained the title of league champions and Chandigarh Football Club stood second at the end of the final super league match in the Chandigarh Senior League Football Tournament at the Sector 17 football stadium here today.

In today's matches, Chandigarh Football Club won by a solitary goal against Audit Haryana. The goal was scored by Vinod of Chandigarh Football Club in the second half after the first half remained goal-less. Sanjiv of Audit Haryana missed the chance of equalising in the 58th minute as his shot touched the goal post and went out.

The second league match of the day was played between Youngsters Club and City Cops Club team. Youngsters Club scored the first goal in the 18th minute of the match through Jatinder Singh. In the second half, no further goal could be scored and finally, Youngsters Club won the match, 1-0.

On the basis of performance in all league matches, Youngsters Club were declared the winners, followed by Chandigarh Football Club team which finished second.

Aman Nat Golf

The third Aman Nat Memorial Golf Tournament got off to a blazing start in sultry conditions at Chandigarh Golf Club today with Irina Brar leading the field after a fantastic two-under par round.

Irina played steadfast golf from the beginning, dropping shots only on the fourth and the seventh to be two over at the turn. She fired a birdie on the 13th hole and was then just one over par with three holes to go. Then an unfortunate 4 putt on the 16th hole and a consequent double bogey marred an otherwise flawless performance. She made immediate amends, however, with a birdie on the 17th to finish at just three over par (75) for the day, seven strokes ahead of her nearest rival, Guneet Raikhy (82).

Boys had to be content with trailing the girls home with Karanvir (83), Nitin Mittal and Sagar Bhatia (87), just showing ahead of 10-year-old Ajitesh Sandhu (88).

Ajitesh Sandhu, who is a sub-junior (below-10 category) competitor, is vying for honours with boys eight years his senior, and doing very well. He is a golf talent.

In the subjunior category, Sruthi Reddy and Angad Matharoo performed well to return good nett cards. In the below-10-years category, Ajitesh Sandhu was followed by Adhiraj Singh.

The scores for various categories are as under: Aman Nat Memorial Trophy (best gross boys and girls) — Irina Brar 75, Guneet Raikhy 82, Karanvir 83.

Boys under-18 (gross) — Karanvir 83, Nitin Mittal and Sagar Bhatia 87, Ajitesh Sandhu 88; boys under-18 (nett) — Ajitesh Sandhu 70, Angad Matharoo 70, Balpreet Singh 72.

Girls under-18 (gross) — Irina Brar 75, Guneet Raikhy 82, Sruthi Reddy 116; Girls under-18 (nett) — Irina Brar 70, Guneet Raikhy 77, Sruthi Reddy 80; boys below-15 (gross) — Nitin Mittal 87, Sagar Bhatia 87, Ajitesh Sandhu 88.
