Campus beat
Faculty’s plea to VC
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Sept 4 — For the first time in the history of Panjab University, all faculty members of a department have given a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor against the recommendations made by the selection committees for appointments to the posts of reader and professor. They have alleged that they are not only violative of the essential qualifications mentioned in advertisement No: 7/97 but also violate the guidelines of the University Grants Commission.

The faculty members of the Bio-Physics department (except Mr N R Kala, who was a member of the selection committee) have in the memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor stated that the selection of Dr Mrs Sharmila S Munde for the post of reader and that of Subrata Biswas for the post of lecturer is unjustified because they do not even possess the basic minimum qualifications.

They have pointed out that Dr Munde does not fulfil the essential requirements of five years after Ph.D of teaching/research experience and has also not contributed to the educational innovation, design of new courses and curricula as per essential qualifications laid down in advt no. 7/97. It is further stated that Dr Munde has done her M.Sc and Ph.D in Physics but the post is in the bio-physics department.

However, as per the UGC circular of 1995, it is essential for a candidate to have completed his M.Sc and post doctorate in a subject for the post of which he has applied. But in this case, while the post is in the department of Bio-Physics, she is qualified for Physics.

The faculty has further alleged that one of the candidates, S. Biswas, selected for the post of lecturer neither possesses an M.Sc degree in bio-physics, nor a doctorate degree in the subject. They have also drawn the attention of the Vice-Chancellor towards the fact that the UGC circular of 1995, which specifies that candidate selected should have at least Ph.D degree and has contributed towards research as evidenced by publications, has been duly adopted by the Senate.

They have also pointed out that certain other candidates who have M.Sc and Ph.d degrees in Bio-Physics and also publications to their credit and few with post doctoral training in USA have been ignored. Back

Price Watch
Fruit prices fluctuate
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Sept 4 —The prices of a number of fruit have witnessed fluctuation in the local market during the past four days.

During a survey of the local markets it was found that a kg of grapes, priced at Rs 100 just four days ago, could be purchased today for Rs 80 today. The wholesale price of the fruit has come down from Rs 200 to Rs 150 per 2.5 kg pack. The traders attributed the fall to a slight increase in the arrivals in the local market during this period from parts of Maharashtra.

The wholesale price of banana has increased from Rs 130 to Rs 150 per 100 pieces, but the fruit was still available in the retail market for Rs 20 a dozen, with retailers predicting a hike in a day or two.

Similarly, 'baggugosha' has become costlier during this period. A kg of the fruit, priced at Rs 30-40 a week back, could be purchased today for Rs 50 in different city markets. The wholesale price of the fruit has increased from Rs 400 to Rs 500 per 16 kg pack as the season of the fruit is almost over in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

The price of apple is also witnessing an upward trend. A kg of golden variety of the fruit, priced at Rs 25 in retail and for Rs 300 per 15-16 kg pack in the wholesale market, could be purchased today for Rs 30 and Rs 400, respectively. There was, however, no change in the price of royal variety as it could still be purchased for Rs 40 a kg in retail and for Rs 450 per 17 kg pack. According to traders, the price is increasing due to lack of arrivals due to a bad crop this year. They predicted that the prices were not likely to go down even in the peak of the season as only 10 per cent of the crop has been left in Himachal Pradesh.

The price of pomegranate has also increased during this period. A kg of the fruit, priced at Rs 40 a week ago, could be purchased today for Rs 50, while in the wholesale market the price has increased from Rs 200 to Rs 150 per 6 kg pack.

The prices of certain fruits have remained stable during this period. A piece of pineapple could be had for Rs 30, while a dozen mausambi was priced at Rs 40. A kg of papaya could be purchased today for Rs 20 in retail and for Rs 12 a kg in the wholesale market.Back
