Aug 25 rally: Bhajan
forgives Hooda HISAR, Sept 4 A former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader, Mr Bhajan Lal today said he had forgiven the PCC President, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, for his "disgraceful behaviour at the time of Sonia Gandhis rally in Hisar on August 25". Talking to newsmen here today during his campaign tour in support of the party candidates, Mr Birender Singh from Hisar and Mr Dharamvir from Bhiwani, the senior Congress leader said, "had I wanted, my supporters would have thrown him (Mr Hooda) off the dais on that day for his humiliating behaviour with me". However, Mr Bhajan Lal claimed, he decided to take pity on Mr Hooda. Mr Hooda had on August 25, during Mrs Sonia Gandhis rally, prevented Mr Bhajan Lal twice from making a speech. Mr Bhajan Lal alleged that Mr Hooda monopolised the stage on that day though Mr Harpal Singh should have conducted the stage as the working President of the PCC. Mr Bhajan Lal, however, did not clarify whether is forgiving Mr Hooda meant that he would ask his supporters to vote for Mr Hooda. He refuted the claims of the BSP candidate from Ambala that the Congress had announced its support for him. Referring to Ms Seljas last-minute withdrawal from the fray, Mr Bhajan Lal said it was "unwise" on her part to do so. He said had Ms Selja asked for his support, he would have willingly supported her. Asked to comment on Mr
Chautalas claim that he would quit politics if his
son Mr Ajay Singh, did not lead from Mandi Adampur
assembly segment, Mr Bhajan Lal said he did not take Mr
Chautala seriously. |

Where roads are death-traps PANIPAT: The industrial town of Panipat on the main G.T. Road is neglected as far as basic needs are concerned. Roads play a major role but in Panipat district these are in a miserable condition. The G.T. Road is nowadays being widened with World Bank funds. Widening of the road from four to six lanes is under progress and bridges are being constructed. Travellers face difficulty due to the construction work. The three state highways connecting the district Assandh road, Gohana road and Sanoli road are in bad shape. The Sanoli road in particular, which connects Haryana with Uttar Pradesh, is the worst off. Although the local municipal council collects toll on these roads, their maintenance is poor. The Sanoli road has developed potholes at different points. At some stretches premixing has not been done for over eight months. Earthwork has been left incomplete and people are forced to inhale dust. The havoc played by dust can be seen at grocery and halwai shops, tea stalls, particularly khokhas. In front of the shops a water tanker is parked. The driver is supposed to sprinkle water on the kutcha road so that the dust does not spread. But in fact he sells the water from the tanker to shopkeepers and only a portion of it is sprinkled on the road. Official callousness has affected business. On either side of the road many shopkeepers have shut down their business because it is difficult for customers to reach these shops. The authorities have laid sewers but the remaining work is still pending for eight months. Showers have made the road muddy and slippery. The two-km-long stretch of the road from Subzi Mandi to Bavel road via the Ganda Nala is in bad shape, as it has been "neglected" by the civic body and the B and R Division of the Public Works Department. The road has not been constructed for the past eight months. Travelling on the road is an ordeal for the local people and those from the adjoining areas. The kutcha road is covered with foot deep potholes, which are filled with water during the monsoon. Residents of the area told this reporter that travelling on this road was hazardous, specially at night, as depressions cannot be seen in the absence of light. Encroachments in the Subzi Mandi area have further added to the existing woes. Residents do not know whom to approach to get their problems redressed. Sources revealed that work on the Sanoli road was being done by the B&R Division and the Yamuna Action Plan paid Rs 45 lakh to the former. As far as funds are concerned, these were credited into the PWD's account eight months ago. The Executive Engineer, when contacted, revealed that for the earth to get settled at Sanoli road, rains are being awaited. It was astonishing that the department does not prefer to utilise their water sprinklers and road-rollers for the job even though payment for construction of the road, amounting to Rs 45 lakh, was deposited in its account. Residents continue to suffer for at least another six months due to delay in completion of the job. Similarly Jatal road, Unjha road, Barsat road, Kutani road, Tehsil road and other roads connecting Amar Bhavan Chowk are also in bad shape. The condition of another road called Noorwala Barsat road is no better than Sanoli road. The callous and indifferent attitude of the civic body and government officials concerned is apparent. Potholes abound and water stagnates causing mosquitoes to breed. Even the Haryana Roadways staff refuse to ply buses on this particular road. During rains the condition of the road worsens as can be seen from the photographs. On enquiry, the Executive Engineer stated that a part of Noorwala Barsat road was average while a small portion needs repair. Tenders had been invited for the work. Roads to Assandh and
Gohana are also in bad shape but in comparison with
Sanoli road, appear well built. No proper lighting is
there and a good number of potholes are seen everywhere.
Other colonies such as Bishan Swaroop Colony, Gita
Colony, Mahavir Colony, Patel Nagar, Wadhawa Ram Colony,
Ramesh Nagar, New Ramesh Nagar, Old Industrial Area and
Model Town have no roads at certain places while on the
other side roads are in a miserable condition.
Substandard material appears to have been used in making
these roads. Khanna road in the Shiv Nagar area made
under the supervision of the Marketing Board, seems to
have been built but with substandard material and
inferior workmanship. The job on Tehsil road and the
Industrial Area road is also in the doldrums. Hard stone
ballast laid on Jatal road shows that its construction is
under progress at a snail's pace and the work may not be
completed this year. |
