Two held:
The police has arrested two members of a gang involved in thefts, according to Mr Paramraj Singh Umranangal, SSP, here on Saturday. He said the arrested had been identified as Farid Ali of Morinda, who was allegedly involved in snatching Rs 3.18 lakh from a railway employee near railway station, Sirhind, and Paras Nath, who was allegedly involved in the theft of cylinders from Mandi Gobindgarh. He said Rs 15,000 had been recovered from them.

KAPURTHALA
2 killed:
Surjit Singh (30) and Zaila (32), both residents of Rampur Jagir village, were killed when a scooter they were riding collided with a vehicle on the Kapurthala-Sultanpur Lodhi road, near Pajjian village, on Friday. The deceased were going to the village when the accident took place.

MOGA
Wood factory gutted:
A fire which caused a loss of several lakh rupees broke out in a saw mill on the Baghapurana Mudki road in the district on Thursday evening. The fire also destroyed several electrical goods. Another fire on the Baghapurana-Kotkapura road in the karyana shops caused loss of thousands of rupees. The Moga Municipal Fire Brigade could control the fire only after two hours. There is great resentment among residents at the failure of the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Prakash Singh Badal, for not providing fire engines to Baghapurana Municipal Committee.

"Sanction DDO power":
Employees of the local Telegraph Office, are sore about the non-release of drawing and disbursing powers to the office, even after a year of its establishment. In its absence, not only is the payment of the salaries of the employees getting delayed, the public is also facing inconvenience in depositing telephone bills.

Rotary function:
The Rotary Club, Patiala, distributed books among students at a function held here on Friday. Mr M.J.S. Thukral, Chairman, projects, said any poor student could take books from the club on the occasion. Dr Abhimanyu of Punjabi University gave a lecture on "Relevance of Gita".

Proposal criticised: The Association of LIC Agents have strongly criticised the proposal of the LIC authorities to change the rules for membership of the LIC Club. In a resolution passed during a meeting organised by the LIC agents, they said the increase in business target to attain the membership was an 'un-judicious' step by the authorities. If they had to change any rules, they should have consulted leaders of agents' organisations. Such a move to stop the Chairman's Club convention would only create misunderstanding between the management and those associated with it at the grassroot level, said a press note issued by the association.

Elected: The following have been elected the office-bearers of the local Advocate General Haryana Employees Welfare Association: President — Mr Vinod Dutt Sharma; Vice President — Ms Kailash Kumari; General Secretary — Mr Daya Nand Yadav and Secretary — Mr Bhagat Raj.

Janmashtami celebrations: The Sree Sidh Baba Amar Nath Mahavir Shiv Mandir Working Committee, Sector 29-C, celebrated the annual parv of Sri Krishna Janmashtami in the temple premises, on Friday from 8 p.m. to 12.30 p.m. A 'bhajan mandli' of Palsora, the Mahila Mandal of the above temple and an artiste from Air Force School Chandigarh participated in this programme and performed 'Krishanlila' before the audience.

Car Bazar: There will be no Car Bazar in the city tomorrow on account of the Lok Sabha elections, Mr Manjit Singh, President of the Chandigarh Car Dealers Association, announced here today.

Bansal supported: The Modern Complex Traders Association have decided to support and vote in favour of the Congress candidate, Mr Pawan Bansal. In a statement, the President of the association, Mr Ravinder Thakur, said only Mr Bansal was the best candidate at present.top

JIND
Ban order:
The District Magistrate, Mr Tarun Bajaj, has banned the movement of people and private vehicles on the banks of the canals in the district to ensure their safety. This order has been issued to prevent cuts and breaches of the canals due to shortage of irrigation water and scarcity of rains. The order comes into force with immediate effect and shall remain in force up to September 30. However, it will not apply to the police personnel.

Murder: Two youths along with their father allegedly murdered their mother at Tito Kheri village in this district. According to information here on Saturday, Vikarm and Vikas along with their father, Partap, murdered Sarti Devi with an axe. The police has registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC against them on a complaint of Mr Mahavir, brother of Sarti Devi.

Case registered: The police has registered a case under Sections 376, 452 and 511 of the IPC against Shalinder, a resident of Uchana Kalan village, in the district for his alleged attempt to rape a 10-year-old girl of the same village. A case has been registered on a complaint of her father.

SIRSA
Rally:
Employees of the local branch of the Haryana Government PWD Mechanical Workers Union held a rally in front of the Public Health Department here on Friday and raised slogans in support of their demands.

Two held: Rani and Sat Pal of Pipli village in this district were arrested by the Kalanwali police in a criminal case registered against them under Sections 354, 506, 342 and 120-B of the IPC on Friday, according to Mr B.S. Sandhu, SP, here on Saturday.

Two cremated: Two unclaimed male bodies were cremated here on Friday. According to sources, the local police recovered these bodies from a canal, near here, on Friday.

Demand: A meeting of the Mahila Samiti of Begu village was held in collaboration with the Naujawan Sabha of the village on Friday. While speaking on the occasion, Ms Reshma Verma, Chairperson of the samiti, demanded that the government school in the village should be upgraded and arrangements be made for adequate supply of water.

Cases settled: The Koshish, a social organisation working in collaboration with the Sirsa police, has settled as many as 105 matrimonial disputes during past eight months, Mr B.S Sandhu, SSP, said here on Saturday.

Liquor seized: Ravinder Singh Mahajan and Atam Parkash, alias Bittu, both local residents, were arrested on Friday and recovered 3,000 liquor pouches from their possession, according to Mr B.S. Sandhu, SSP. The police has registered a criminal case under the Excise Act against them.

SONEPAT
Ban:
The District Magistrate, Mr Anil Kumar, has banned the assembly of five or more persons and carrying of arms and knives within the area of 200 metres around the polling stations. The ban was imposed under Section 144 of the Cr P.C.

Murder: Rameshwar (52), a farmer, was allegedly murdered while he was asleep in a tubewell at Murthal village, 8 km from here, on Friday. The police has registered a case.

Three held: The police has arrested three members of a gang of robbers operating in Sonepat, Rohtak and Jind districts. Mr K. Selvraj, SSP, said here on Saturday that the arrested had been identified as Rajesh, Parveen, alias Babloo, and Jasbir. The police, he said, had recovered three pistols and seven cartridges from their possession.top

The district police will organise a rally of school children against drug abuse on September 7 here, according to a press note issued here by Mr Zahoor H. Zaidi, SP.

Theft in temple: Three 'mukhotas' made of silver were reportedly stolen from Hidimba Devi temple at Dhungri, near Manali, on Friday. These silver valuables were temple offerings.
