ABOHAR
Resentment:
Residents of Krishna Nagar held a demonstration at the Municipal Council complex here on Thursday and expressed resentment over the wastage of the public funds on recarpeting of the streets. An executive officer said no order had been issued for the work and lodged an FIR against contractor Baldev Krishan.

AMRITSAR
Telephone exchange:
The local vikas manch has demanded an immediate restoration of dead telephones of Ajit Nagar and the east Mohan Nagar area as a result of old exchange being shifted to a new building at Guru Ravi Dass Marg.

JALANDHAR
FOGSI seminar:
A seminar was organised by the local chapter of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) on Thursday on infections in pregnancy. It was followed by an open discussion on complicated cases of medical termination of pregnancy and their management.

LUDHIANA
Two arrested:
The police has arrested Bhupinder Sood and Manohar Lal Sood for allegedly violating the orders of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Goel for keeping their wine shop, and ahata open which is located near the Ludhiana Railway Station till 1.15 a.m.

MALERKOTLA
PSEB employee nabbed:
The SDO of the PSEB at Dhanaula, Mr Varinder Pal Goyal, was caught red handed by the DSP (Vigilance Bureau) Sangrur, Mr Mandeep Singh Sidhu, for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 8000 from Mohinder Singh of Kattu village under Dhanaula Police Station.

NAWANSHAHR
Sangat Darshan:
The Deputy Commissioner, Dr Roshan Sunkaria, the SSP, Mr R.P. Meena along with the MLA, Mr Nand Lal, heard the grievances of the people at a 'Sangat Darshan' programme organised at Chhuchhewal village 25 km from here on Thursday. The Deputy Commissioner said Rs 13 lakh would be spent on the construction of a water tank in the village and added that Rs 1.75 lakh had already been spent on the construction of primary school building and payment of pensions upto March, 1999 had been deposited in the bank account.

PHAGWARA
One dead:
A scooterist Devinder Singh (30), was crushed to death by a bus on the G.T. Road near Chachoki village here on Thursday.
Dharna:
Various Municipal Council employees unions on Thursday staged a dharna in town hall in protest against the non-acceptance of their demands including uniforms to Class IV employees, distribution of interest on PF to staff members, and confirmation of temporary employees.

SAMRALA
Surprise visit:
Mr Baldev Singh, the local SDM made a surprise check of the government primary schools at Ladhran, Chahlan, Rohle and Khatran villages on Thursday. Later he sent the report of irregularities to the authorities concerned.
Appointed :
Mr H.S. Sarao took over as the Divisional Engineer (Telephones) here on Thursday.
Draft presented :
Ms Manjeet Kaur Sidhu, a state awardee teacher presented a draft of Rs 51,000 to the Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, for the welfare of war heroes.

Camp:

Case registered: The police registered a case on Friday against Muni Devi and Hira of Mani Majra for abducting a minor girl of Balaungi, on the basis of a complaint by the girl's father.

PANCHKULA
Blood donation:
A blood donation camp will be organised at Sant Nirankari Satsang Bhavan, Sector 9, on Saturday from 7 am. It will be inaugurated by Mr Vivek Joshi, Deputy Commissioner.
Parishad week: The local unit of Bharat Vikas Parishad will celebrate 'parishad week' from Saturday. The celebrations will commence with a group song contest.

ZIRAKPUR
Foundation stone:
Captain Kanwaljit Singh, Finance Minister, Punjab, will lay the foundation stone of the housing complex of Sarv Mangal Cooperative House Building Society Limited in Lohgarh village on Sunday at 10 am.

Mother Teresa fortnight:
The local Mother Teresa Convent School celebrated a Mother Teresa fortnight in the school premises to pay tribute to the late Nobel laureate. The celebrations that lasted for 15 days concluded here on Friday.

ROHTAK
Oral implantology:
Dr P.C. Kwara, a dentist from Italy, stressed that the technique of oral implantology should be made available in India at cheaper rates. He was speaking at a workshop organised at the local Dental College, on Thursday.

SIRSA
Sentence pronounced:
Deepak and Satish were sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment in a case registered under Section 304 B/34 of the IPC in May last year. A press note issued here by the police on Thursday stated that both of them had a scuffle with Sushil Saini, leading to his death.

SONEPAT
Amount deposited:
Employees of the Sonepat Cooperative Sugar Mills have created a record by depositing Rs 3.17 crore in various small savings schemes in the current financial year. According to press note, the employees have deposited Rs 70.89 lakh in these schemes in August alone.
Financial crisis:
Resentment prevails among employees of the Kharkhauda civic body against the non-payment of their salary for the past two months. According to official sources, the civic body had been facing financial crisis for the past few years and this had led to the non-payment of the salary to the employees.
Nominated:
Mr Kishan Singh Sangwan of Gohana, Mr Karan Singh Dalal of Palwal and Dr Sudha yadav of Mahindergarh have been nominated as the members of the Executive Committee of the state unit of the BJP.
Ragging decried:
The Parents Association decried on Thursday the ragging of the girl students of BAMS by their seniors at Gurukul Khanpur Kalan village in this district and demanded action against those involved in it.
Briefcase snatched: Two car-borne youths are reported to have snatched the brief-cases from Mr Ashok Kumar Jain, Branch Manager and Mr K.L. Manchanda, Assistant Manager of the Central Bank of India, while they were on their way to Khanda village of the district on Thursday.

Seva dal camp:
A former parliamentary secretary and Congress MLA from Ghumarwin, Mr Kashmir Singh Thakur presided over a Congress seva dal camp at Ghagus, 9 km from here, on Thursday and decided to depute seva dal volunteers to every polling booth in the district to ensure peaceful polling and to check bogus voting and booth capturing by the supporters of the BJP candidate.
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the district unit of the Deputy Commissioners Office Employees Union: President — Mr Harisingh Thakur; Vice-Presidents — Mr D. Kashyap and Mr Bishandass Sharma; General Secretary — Mr Ramdass Chaudhary; Finance Secretary — Mr Prakash Chand.
Anganwadi kendras:
A government spokesman said here on Friday that 89 'Anganwadi Kendras' are functioning in Jhandutta development block under the aegis of child development project. He said 19 such kendras are functioning at Jhandutta, 27 at Barthin, 19 at Bhaged and 24 at Kalol. These kendras were providing food to 900 expectant mothers and 1037 women and their babies.
Declamation contest: Anupama and Bhayana of Government Girls Senior Secondary School Bilaspur and Ankita Chandel of DAV School were declared first, second and third, respectively, in declamation contest organised by the Nehru Yuvak Kendra on Hindi day here on Thursday.

KANGRA
Traffic blocked:
Villagers of Katohai and Chuchat blocked traffic on Dharamsala-Shimla high way on Thursday for more than two hours. They were protesting against encroachments on the government land and subsequent administrative inaction against the encroachers.
Commits suicide:
A 35-year-old woman, Susma Devi, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison here on Thursday. The parents and the in-laws of Sushma sought permission from the local SDM for not carrying out an autopsy on her body.

KULU
Charitable show:
The local unit of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of Government College organised a charitable cultural show. The Vice-President of the district unit of the ABVP, Mr Avneesh Katyayen said the funds collected through the show would be given to the Chief Minister for the families of the Himachal martyrs.
Kisan mela:
'IFFCO Vision 2005' was organised as a Kisan Mela at the Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishwavidyalya, Research Station at Bajaura on Thursday. Mr V.K. Bali, GM said Rs 8 crore had been spent on farmers. The farmers were told to use the fertilisers and other chemicals for their crop and make India lead the world in the 21st century.

PALAMPUR
Accident:
A school teacher was killed and two others were injured when a truck collided with their vehicle near Dehan on Thursday. Both injured persons have been admitted to the local Civil Hospital. The police has registered a case and the driver of truck has been taken into custody.
