Cultural Scene
Kailash, Manasarovar pictures on display
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Sept 21 — An exhibition of photographs of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar by Rekha Jhanji — 'From the Aesthetic to the Spiritual: A Journey to Kailash and Manasarovar' — opened at the Panjab University Fine Arts Museum here yesterday.

Rekha Jhanji is a professor in the Department of Philosophy, Panjab University. The 43 works seem to celebrate the tranquility of time, which ceases to move when overpowered by the beauty of nature.

The date and the time imprints on the photographs are jarring and distracting. One of the speakers at the inauguration said these appeared to be "signatures of time on works which reflect the stillness of time".

Some of her works, in which she captures the grey and sombre hues of the evening at the Manasarovar, are brilliant.

Rekha Jhanji says, "I took these pictures just because I felt the need to share a sublime experience with all those who love nature and see in it a reflection of the spiritual." Her sensitivity towards art and aesthetics has come out well with this exhibition.

She has also published half a dozen books on aesthetics. Her recent works include 'The Sensuous in Art' and 'The Human Condition in the Mahabharata'.

This exhibition will remain open till September 24.Back
