Health check-up camp for slum children

Chandigarh, January 1
The Community Medicine Department of the PGI, today organised a health check-up camp at Ashiana School in Sector 24 for slum children.

Dr J.S. Thakur, Assistant Professor at the Community Medicine Department, said at the camp slum children were told about the personal hygiene measures and benefit of cleanliness. All children were then medically examined and a majority of them were found suffering from anaemia and worm infestation, upper respiratory tract infection and dental caries.

Some children also suffered from vitamin A deficiency. They were given medicines which were made available by doctors. These children will be examined periodically. Children were also motivated to educate the general public in their colony. They were asked to set an example so that other children also were motivated to get themselves enrolled at the school.

Loveleen wins cycling bronze

Chandigarh, January 1
Loveleen Kaur, a Class VII student of Tender Heart School, Sector 33, pedalled to glory by bringing home a bronze medal in the 55th senior, 32nd Junior and 18th Sub-Junior National Track Cycling Championships which concluded at Bikaner on December 30.

Loveleen aged 12, achieved the feat in under-14 section in 1 km by clocking 1.45 minutes. She had earlier won one silver and three bronze medals in the Chandigarh State Cycling Championships.

Twenty participants from the city took part in this meet. Her forthcoming cycling tournaments include National Mountain Bike at Chandigarh and national road races at Bangalore during the next two months.

Rowing Championship

The Chandigarh State Rowing championship for men and women will be held at Sukhna Lake on January 5 and 6. This was said in a press release of the Chandigarh Rowing Association. The events to be held include single scull, double scull, coxless pairs and coxless fours. The team for the Senior National rowing championships to be held at Chennai in February will also be selected during this meet. Entries close with Col M. Berry, General Manager, Lake Club on January 4.

Hockey trials

The Chandigarh Women’s Hockey Association will hold the selection trials to select the UT junior hockey team on Wednesday at 2 pm at Hockey Stadium, in Sector 18. The meet would be held from January 15 to 23 at Tirupati (AP). Players born on or after January 1, 1983, will be eligible.

Volleyball title

PATIALA: Coaching Centre downed the Physical College of Education 25-18,20-25,25-19 and 25-23 to win the title in the men’s section of the Patiala District Volleyball Championships which concluded at the Polo grounds here on Wednesday.

On the distaff side, the Physical College of Education eves beat the Coaching Centre girls 25-15, 20-25, 25-16, 25-20 to win the title.

Twelve teams took part in the men’s section while, eight teams participated in the women’s section. The prizes were distributed by Mr B.S. Billing, vice-president, Patiala District Volleyball Association.
