DMA flays processing fee on blood
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 14
The Delhi Medical Association today condemned the Delhi Government’s decision to charge processing fee for blood and blood products issued to patients in private hospitals, nursing homes and private rooms in government hospitals. With this decision, the fee of Rs 500 per unit of blood or blood products would be in addition to the same amount of blood being donated by close relative and friends of the patients as a replacement. This decision is not in the spirit of law and is anti-public and a retrograde step in the field of transfusion services,” said Dr V. K. Monga.

He said that the decision was unconstitutional, as the duty of state and national governments was to provide minimum basic essential healthcare services to the citizens. “It may even deter voluntary donors from donating blood as a selfless service,” he said. “All patients admitted to private centres are not really rich. Some of them get admitted because of compulsions like longer queues,” he added.
