THREE ARRESTED: The police claims to have arrested three robbers and recovered gold jewellery, vehicles and arms and ammunition from them. Mr Shiv Kumar Verma, SP (D), in a press release on Wednesday said the police had arrested Sukhdev Singh, alias Sukha, Swaranjit Singh and Barinder Pal Singh, alias Baba, who used to rob people at gun point. CASE REGISTERED: A case of murder of a person by his real brother was reported at police chowki Saila Khurd on Tuesday. On the complaint of Kailash, wife of deceased Mohan Lal, the police has registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC against her brother-in-law Paramjit, alias Mahesh, and his sister Kamlesh. In her complaint Kailash stated that his brother-in-law Paramjit used to quarrel with her husband over his share in the house. SCOOTER SNATCHED: Three miscreants forcibly snatched a scooter (Pb-07J-5032) from Sat Pal of Atalgarh, near the Pur Hiran area on Wednesday. The sadar police has registered a case in this connection. POPPY SEIZED: The Mahilpur police has arrested Rubi, of the local Langeri Road for possessing 12 kg of poppy husk. In another incident, the Hajipur police has arrested Inderjit of Gabba under the Excise Act and seized 9750 ml of illicit liquor from him. DOWRY COMPLAINT: Suman Lata, daughter of Tarsem Singh of Tanda has alleged that her husband Manjit Singh, father-in-law Mohinder Singh and mother-in-law Bimla Devi of Piplanwala had been torturing her for dowry. A case has been registered. CYCLIST KILLED: Cyclist Sukhwinder Pal of Brahmjit was crushed to death by a truck at the old Hariana road here on Wednesday. The truck driver has absconded. A case has been registered in this connection.

ANNUAL FUNCTION: The International Students’ organisation of Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle will organise its 30th annual function from October 4 to October 6. The function would be inaugurated by Mr Kirpal Singh Badungar, President, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee. Mr Gurmeet Singh, chief secretary of the circle, said 400 delegates from India and abroad would attend the function.MEETING: An emergency meeting of M.Phil and Ph.D school teachers was held. Ms Kanwaljit Kaur Bal, president of the association said the teachers expressed dissatisfaction over the stepmotherly treatment meted out to teachers with higher qualifications. They said the teachers with higher qualifications working in government schools, should be given special increments. RESULTS DECLARED: The results of the drug abuse painting competition held by the Aas Kiran Deaddiction Centre, Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, have been declared. The first prize of Rs 5100 has gone to Mr Kuldeep Singh of GGN Public School, Ludhiana. Ms Gurasish Kaur of Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women has won the second prize of Rs 3100 and Mr Kulbir Singh of Hira Public Senior Secondary School, Kainaur district, Ropar, the third prize of Rs 2100. According to Mr Jasbir Singh, associate director of the circle, more than 2000 students from over 150 educational institutions participated in the competition. Selected paintings will be displayed on Friday and Saturday at the head office of Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle in Model Town Extension. Later, these will become a part of the all-India tour of drug awareness exhibitions. MEETING HELD: The Electrohomeopathic Students Welfare Wing Punjab held a meeting at Ludhiana Holistic Health Centre on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by members of the state body. Dr Kuldeep Singh Khaira, president of the wing warned that certain electrohomeopathic medical institutes were duping and harassing the students by not issuing detailed marks certificates. “If they do not to issue the certificates legal action would be taken against them,” he said. Dr Balwinder Singh Bains, secretary of the wing, the students should approach the district and state body units in case of any
discrepancy. EYE CAMP: The Mohan Dai Oswal Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation will organise a free eye check-up camp in the Eye Department of the hospital on Saturday. Dr Satish Jain, Medical Director, said cataract operations with intra-vascular level implantations, along with other surgeries, would be performed by Dr Neeraj Arora and Dr Ashish Thapar besides free medicines to patients. Dr S.N. Tiwari, Civil Surgeon, will inaugurate the Eye camp. TB DETECTION CAMP: Ludhiana TB Eradication Society will organise a free TB detection camp and general medical camp in association with the Akhil Bharatha Ayyappa Seva, PUDA office. A team of specialised doctors from all fields will examine patients. Registrations for poor TB patients, detected in the camp, will be done and medicines provided free of
cost. SATSANG: The birthday of Shri Prem Maharaj was celebrated in Shri Ram Sharnam Park on Wednesday. A satsang, presided over by Sant Narkewal Bedi, was organised on the occasion and was attended by a large gathering which recited ‘amritvani’ and paid homage to the great saint. Sant Narkewal Bedi said that Shri Prem Maharaj had become a saint early in his life and always prayed to the almighty for mitigating the sufferings of distressed people. SECURITY TIGHTENED: Mr G.S. Sohata, DIG, Border Range, Amritsar, has said that the security will be stepped up in the border districts of Gurdaspur and Amritsar following fresh wave of violence in Jammu and Kashmir. ELECTED: Mr Raj Kumar Kaushal has been elected as the president and Mr Krishan Bharti as the vice-president of Shri Durga Mandir Ram Lika Committee. Talking to media persons here today, Mr Kaushal said ‘Ram Lila’ would start from October 6 and would feature famous artists. ‘Ram Lila’ would be inaugurated by the local MLA, Mr Amrik Singh Dhillon, and on October 15 ‘a shobha yatra’ with tableaux depicting the life of Bhagwan Balmiki will be held, he said.
