Sensex breaches 10,000 barrier
Mumbai, February 6
Sensex today made history by breaching the 10,000 mark on the back of large-scale buying by funds. Sensex went on to touch 10,002.83 points before closing lower at 9980.42 gaining 237.44 points from the previous close. Nifty too touched an intra-day high of 3008.95 before slipping to close at 3,000.45.

In view of the allegations of custodial torture of a man from Haryana, his family and relatives by the police in connection with a criminal case, the Supreme Court has laid down fresh guidelines to prevent police atrocities and involved the state human rights panels and the CBI to enquire into such cases.

Block Congress president and former District President of the Youth
Congress were shot in different incidents here this evening. One of
the victims was sarpanch of Danewala village, other was a former
president of the Truck Operators Union.

Goods worth crores were gutted in a
fire that broke out in a godown of the Railways here. The material was
to be exported to Pakistan. It included relief material for the
earthquake-hit.

delinks Russia from WTO membership on trade issues
New Delhi, February 6
On the insistence of Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh, India has agreed to delink the support to
Russian membership at WTO from the settlement of trade payments by
Russia. Both countries today agreed to set up a joint study group to
finalise a roadmap for increasing the bilateral trade turnover to
$10 billion by 2010.
