Terror alert in London, 6 held

London, July 5
Scotland Yard today arrested six persons in an early morning swoop in parts of London that included the area where the Olympics start later this month.

A series of raids are being carried out in west, east and north London as security forces arrested the six persons as part of a planned intelligence-led operation conducted over the past few weeks. The police said the operation was not linked to the Olympics. The current threat level is classed as ‘Substantial’ — a terrorist attack is a strong possibility.

The six arrested — five men and a woman — were arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under the Terrorism Act 2000, and have been taken to a south east London police station where they remain in custody.

There were reports that at least two of the arrested were brothers, but this was not confirmed by the police.

The police said a 29-year-old man was arrested from a street in west London while another aged 21 and a 30-year-old woman were arrested from separate residential premises in west London.

Three other men — aged 26, 18 and 24 — were arrested from a residential premises in east London. — AP

n The police later said the scene was safe, no suspects were in custody and the incident was not related to terror or linked to London’s arrests
