Gurdaspur, March 10
Two murders in a span of 24 hours shook the serenity of the town, forcing residents to point fingers at the efficacy of the Gurdaspur police. The murder of a RMP doctor at one of the busiest areas of the town sent shock waves among residents. Ashwani Kumar, a resident of Geeta Bhawan area in the town, was attacked with sharp-edged weapons by some unidentified persons late last night. The police said the murder was a “well planned one.”

Ritu, the wife of the deceased, who was also attacked, told the police that the miscreants looted nearly 20 ounces of gold from their house after killing her husband.

However, the police discounted that theory that robbery was the motive behind the crime.

SSP Raj Jit Singh Hundal said a case under Section 460, 458 of the IPC had been registered against some unidentified persons at the Gurdaspur city police station. “We are exploring all angles and hope to arrest the assailants soon,” he added. Following the incident, the police has laid nakas at various places in the city.

A police official disclosed that Gurcharanjit Singh had come from Sri Hargobindpur to help his daughter ,who was being tormented by her drug addict husband and when he confronted his son-in-law, Gurcharanjit was thrashed by him and his friends, following which he died.

A case under Section 302, 323, 148 and 149 of the IPC was registered at the Dhariwal police station. The police has arrested one of the accused while a manhunt has been launched to nab other three accused.
