2kg opium seized:
Bhupinder Singh of Khakhawali (Lambi) village was on Tuesday arrested after 2 kg opium was recovered from his possession during an interception. The contraband was reportedly smuggled through Rajasthan.

Minor recovered: A minor, who was fleeced by her sister’s husband in Sriganganagar last week, was recovered from Gobindgarh village, 6 km from here, on the Muktsar link road on Tuesday. She was handed over to her parents. The police is investigating the case further and trying to arrest the alleged accused who is at large.

Power cuts greet schoolchildren: Erratic power supply played a spoilsport on Tuesday as schools across the district reopened after a summer break. Power supply remained cut for hours in most of the schools of the Balluana segment of Abohar subdivision. On account of the electricity cut, the schoolchildren had to face a lot of inconvenience as they rejoined the schools after months.

Body found in Sirhind Canal:
A body was found floating in Teona Head of the Sirhind Canal on Tuesday. The volunteers of Sahara Jan Sewa took out the body from the canal. Gautam Goyal of the Sahara Jan Sewa said, “It seems that the body is 2-3 days old and nothing has been found with the body from which the identification of the deceased can be made.”

Body found near Jagraon
: A body was found near a liquor vend on the outskirts of Galib Ran Singh village near here today. The police spotted a name—Kuldeep Gul—tattooed on the victim’s arm. He appears to be of around 40 years of age, said ASI Lakhvir. It will be kept at the Civil Hospital, Jagraon, for 72 hours for identification.

Kidnapped girl rescued
: The Sarabha Nagar police have booked two persons for kidnapping a minor girl from outside a mall at Ferozepur Road on Monday evening. The girl was rescued from Moga on Tuesday. Two youths, identified as Barinder Singh and Amrik Singh, kidnapped the  17-year-old girl. Barinder told the police that he was having an affair with the girl.

PUNSUP official held for graft:
The Vigilance Bureau on Tuesday caught District Manager, PUNSUP, Muktsar, red-handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 at his office. The VB set the trap for Yashpal Sharma after receiving a complaint from Harpreet Sharma, Inspector, PUNSUP, Muktsar. Hargobind Singh, Superintendent of Police, Vigilance, said Yashpal sought Rs 50,000 from Harpreet, who was in charge of buying wheat for PUNSUP in the area.

Vehicle overturns, 1 dead:
Rajinder Singh (40) of Barnala died when a tractor trailer overturned in Khairabad village near here on Monday. The police said Gurmail Singh of Chalur village lost control of the vehicle in the mud. Rajinder Singh and Jaspal Singh were sitting on top of the wheat husk loaded in the trailer. Rajinder died in the accident, while Jaspal got injured.

Tarn Taran
4 killed in accident:
Four youths of Bhaini Winning village died in a road accident near the Harike headworks, 35 km from Tarn Taran, on Tuesday. The deceased are Gurjant Singh (30), Jasbir Singh (35), Parkash Singh (30) and Kulbir Singh (34). The car they were travelling collided head on with a truck and fell in a 10-foot-deep gorge along the road. The truck too fell in the gorge on the car. The truck driver, who fled from the spot, has been booked.


Mandi shopkeepers demand demarcation of land
: Shopkeepers of Joginder Nagar today met the Sub Divisional Magistrate and other officials. They demanded demarcation of land on Joginder Nagar–Sarkaghat road, on which their shops were constructed. The shopkeepers said several cases were filed against them in revenue courts due to lack of proper demarcation of land. They said demarcation of land was necessary to prove the allegations of encroachment against them false.
