Potato cheapest vegetable

PANCHKULA, Aug 3 — Priced at Rs 5 a kg, potato continues to be the cheapest item among the commonly used vegetables in different sector markets here. It was followed by onion, sold for Rs 10 a kg. The prices of other vegetables are also low when compared to the corresponding rates in the markets of Chandigarh.

Sold at Rs 33 a kg in the Sector 9 market, peas were the costliest vegetable in the market. The price of peas in the Sector 11 market was Rs 35 a kg. Interestingly, the vegetable was being sold by vendors in the Sector 6 market between Rs 33 and Rs 35.

Another widely consumed vegetable, capsicum was priced the lowest at Rs 16 a kg in the Sector 9 market as compared to Rs 24 in the Sector 6 market. A few days back this vegetable was being sold at Rs 24 to Rs 32 a kg in Chandigarh. The prices of brinjal hovered around Rs 12 a kg as compared to Rs 14 a kg in the Sector 6 market.

During a survey of different sector markets it was found that bittergourd was being sold for Rs 15 a kg. In the Sector 11 market the price of the vegetable was around Rs 18 a kg. Similarly, cucumber was available for Rs 15 a kg in the Sector 9 market. The prices of lady's finger varied between Rs 12 and Rs 15 a kg in different sector markets as compared to Rs 20 a kg in Chandigarh.

Arbi was priced at Rs 12 a kg. Similarly beans were also being sold at Rs 12 a kg. Another commonly consumed item, tomato was priced at Rs 20 a kg. A few days back the prices of tomato was around Rs 20 a kg in the markets of Chandigarh.

While tori was available at Rs 20 a kg, cabbage was being sold at Rs 14 a kg . Lemons remained costly at Rs 16 a kg .Back

 


250 for athletics trials

Chandigarh, Aug 3 — Nearly 250 probables in the junior section today tried their best to be considered for selection in the trials held for the North Zone Junior Athletic Meet to be held at Allahabad on August 20 and 21. The trials were conducted by the Amateur Athletic Association of Chandigarh here at the Sector 7 sports complex.

Veena Yadav of Sarvhitkari School, Sector 40, and Pankti Lakra of the SAI STC, Sector 18, held the spotlight. The former clocked her career best 1:00:10 in 400 metres in the girls' under-16 section, while Pankti cleared 1.45 metres in high jump in the girls' under-20 section. Pankti was the bronze medal winner at the Cuttack Junior Nationals where she cleared 1.49 metres. Amardeep Singh of DAV College, Sector 10, and a silver medallist at the All-India Inter University Competition also gave a good performance in 10 km walk for boys in the under-20 section.

According to Mr Ravinder Chaudhary, Secretary of AAAC, the final list of probables for the coaching camp to begin on August 5 will be released tomorrow. Moreover, the qualifying standards will be the performance in the last inter-zone and north zone meets.

Sub-jr soccer
On the penultimate day of the ongoing Chandigarh Football Tournament for boys under the age of 16, both semi-finals were marred by heavy rain at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8. As soon as the first semi-final match began in the afternoon, the rain came, cancelling both matches. Tomorrow, the matches have been scheduled to begin at the same time i.e. at 3 pm. The final will now be played on August 5.

Basketball tourney
Shriman Ishwar Singh Memorial Basketball Tournament will begin on Thursday at IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21. The four-day meet will be inaugurated by Mr Ramsekhar, IAS and Deputy Commissioner-cum-Director of Sports of the UT, at 5 pm. The meet will be organised by the Shriman Ishwar Singh Memorial Education and Welfare Society. Most schools of the city are expected to take part in the tournament.Back
