Bhajan loyalists to oppose
Hooda SONEPAT, Aug 3 A split in the Congress party seems to be imminent in the district if the party high command fails to intervene immediately. This was evident from the mood of the large number of party workers who assembled at the residence of Mr Dharampal Singh Malik, former HPCC president, here yesterday and expressed solidarity with him as well as former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal. They openly criticised Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda for discriminating against the leaders and workers loyal to Mr Bhajan Lal, and alleged that Mr Hooda was surrounded by opportunists whose main aim was to weed out Bhajan Lal men from the party. They also warned that if due respect and adequate share of the party tickets were not given to Mr Bhajan Lal group, the party would be totally wiped out from the state in the coming elections. They blamed Mr Hooda for the decline in party's popularity among the masses in the state in the wake of the role played by him in the Bansi Lal episode recently. The Congress activists declared that they would oppose the candidature of Mr Hooda from the Sonepat Lok Sabha seat and would work openly for his defeat. They demanded that the party ticket from this seat should be allotted to Mr Malik. Meanwhile, Mr Azad Singh Nehra, former general secretary of the Haryana Pradesh Yuva Congress, Mr Jasbir Chhikara, general secretary of the Sonia Gandhi Youth Association and Mr Arun Tyagi, vice-president of the District Youth Congress, issued a joint statement here today urging the party high command not to give party ticket to Mr Hooda from the Sonepat Lok Sabha seat and ask him to contest the elections from Rohtak. They alleged that Mr
Hooda had already misled the party high command for
extending support to the Bansi Lal government and now he
was again out to mislead it to get the party ticket for
this seat. They demanded that the party observer Mr S.N.
Rao should be asked to visit Sonepat for getting
on-the-spot information about the views of the party
workers on the issue. |
Majors body arrives on marriage
anniversary GURGAON, Aug 3 Thirtyone-year-old Maj Sushil Aima of 17 Rashtriya Rifles kept his promise giving "surprise" to his mother. A few days ago he wrote a letter to his mother Kanta Aima saying that he would surprise her by coming to Gurgaon on his fifth anniversary on August 2. That he was granted leave was also surprising for his family members. But fate had willed otherwise. His body reached here today morning. It had arrived at the Palam Airport last evening. Major Aima fell to the bullets of Pak-inspired militants at Kopra village in the Poonch area on August 1. Major Aima was on a three-year deputation to 47 ADA. He had completed a year of the deputation period. According to Lt Col Arvind Mathur, the IInd in command to Major Aima in the operation, his unit was informed that about 50 militants were hiding on hills. Major Aima led the unit for the operation. The militants foxed the advancing unit and escaped in the nearby fields having standing crops of maize. Colonel Mathur said one of the militants lobbed a grenade at Major Aima. Although he successfully dodged the flying grenade, one jawan was injured by its splinters. The slain hero nabbed the militant in one to one fight and pumped bullets in him. He also liquidated the second militant advancing towards him. But he fell to a bullet hit by the third militant who found the target on his left temple. Although he was fully incapacitated, Major Aima killed the militant in an exchange of bullets before he closed his eyes for ever. Major Aimas family had migrated from Kashmir to Gurgaon in 1990, when militancy started gaining momentum in the troubled state. Mr Makhan Lal Aima, father of Major Aima, said he was proud of his son. Ms Archana Aima, wife of the hero, was understandably shaken. However, family members were not alone to receive the body of the hero. Hundreds of persons from all walks of life descended on Palam Vihar to pay their last respects to him. Anti-Pakistan slogans rent the air. "Shahid Aima amar rahe" (martyr Aima be you immortal) was the refrain of the crowd. Among others, Mr Kailash Sharma, Haryana minister and former ministers Ram Bilas Sharma and Suraj Pal were present on the occasion. Children of neighbouring schools stood along the path of the cavalcade that followed the body of the Major to Delhis cantonment area for the funeral. According to Major R.K.
Sharma (retd), secretary of the Zila Sainik Board, the
state government had christened the main road connecting
Sector 23 and Palam Vihar from Brijwasan to Dundahera
after the name of the hero. |

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Board of Management held at Chandigarh today. Mr Vinay Kumar succeeds Prof J.B. may not enjoy a friendly atmosphere in the university as
the HAUTAs aversion for him is well known. |
HVPN wrath on HVP
loyalists BHIWANI, Aug 3 With the downfall of the HVP government , the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) authorities have taken away special privileges from political had- beens. Extra lines provided to the houses of VIPs of the previous regime for uninterrupted power supply, have been removed with immediate effect. The nigam had earlier provided round-the-clock electricity to the residences of such political stalwarts. But extra supply lines from local Ghantaghar and Vikas Nagar were cut off just two days back. Sources in nigam said since this type of electricity was provided free of cost now they would have to pay the bills. On the other hand, the nigam has been directed to restore electricity to those villages where people are suffering due to the wrath of the previous government. As many as 22 transformers under two suburban divisions of the Bhiwani urban division and 18 transformers under Dadri division are being changed. Earlier, villagers from Badhra, Loharu and parts of Mahendragarh district had resorted to an agitation at Mandhiali village against decision of the previous government but it too had not convinced Mr Bansi Lal who denied replacement of the damaged transformers until the pending electricity bills were paid. Mr Om Parkash Chautala, the then Opposition leader, had promised to replace such transformers on coming to power. The nigam, on the directions of the new Chief Minister, has taken certain decisions to improve the power supply in this district. A new 11-KV Hanuman Dhani feeder has been commissioned to benefit the southern areas of Hanuman Dhani, Patram Gate, etc. Besides, the new
government faces an uphill task of holding an inquiry
into the purchase of electronic meters, working of which
was found defective. On information the department had
removed these meters from the industrial units, where
they were installed, immediately and had to bear economic
loss worth crores of rupees. |

Mr Chautala was talking to media persons here at the residence of the Minister of State for Tourism, Mr Om Prakash Jain. He alleged that every section of the society suffered a lot during the three years of Bansi Lals rule. KUTA resents V-Cs stand KURUKSHETRA, Aug 3 The Kurukshetra University Executive Council has resented the anti-teacher stand adopted by the Kurukshetra University Vice-Chancellor in the Executive Council meeting held here on July 28 last on the issue of Haryana Government notification regarding revised pay scales and service conditions of the teachers as well as on item number 39 on that meeting agenda, concerning additional representations in the Executive Council. Stating this in a statement released to the Press here today, the Kurukshetra University Teachers Association (KUTA) Secretary, Dr S.S. Teotia, said KUTA had unanimously demanded that only the first part of Haryana Government's notification regarding pay scales be accepted by the council while regarding the second part of the notification introducing considerable structural amendments in the UGC package, the teachers had demanded that it should be sent back to the state government for rectification of anomalies. Dr Teotia alleged that the Vice-Chancellor by insisting that the package be accepted in toto, had ignored the wishes of the teaching community and betrayed their trust. Dr Teotia said that the Executive Council also expressed reservation on the Vice-Chancellor's insistence in the Executive Council meeting that item number 39 be sent to the Chancellor for consideration inspite of KUTA's unanimous resolution that the item be withdrawn as it would involve fundamental changes in the structure of Executive Council making two of its members permanent incumbents whereas Executive Council membership is rotational and term-based. The Vice-Chancellor went ahead with this undemocratic plan of insisting on referring the matter to the Chancellor, alleged Dr Teotia. The KUTA Secretary
further said that the KUTA Executive Council also took
exception to the calling of armed police at the venue of
the dharna staged by KUTA members here on University
Campus on July 28, when the KUTA members had already
given a notice of a peaceful demonstration against the
Haryana Government notification on pay scales. |
