LUDHIANA
DA instalment:
In a letter sent to the Union Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, on Monday the All-India Government Pensioners Association demanded that the DA instalment due to the central government employees and pensioners with effect from July this year should be released immediately.

Sapling plantation: A sapling plantation project was organised at Police Lines in the Civil Lines here. According to Mr J.P.S. Saluja, PRO of the Lions Club (Ludhiana North), Mr Nageshwar Rao, SP, was chief guest at the function and about 50 saplings were planted in the Police Lines.

MOGA
Resentment:
Resentment prevails among the residents of the town and adjoining villages over the refusal of certain banks and other business establishments to accept the currency notes of Rs 500 denomination. The banks' refusal comes in the wake of reports regarding the Fake Rs 500 denomination currency notes being in circulation. The police in several towns in the state has already seized fake currency notes in raids during the current month.

PATHANKOT
Rotary Club:
Mr Sunil Khosla has been installed president of the Rotary Club (Midtown) on Sunday, Mr Raj Tandon was the chief guest on the occasion.

Dharna: The Punjab Draughtsmen Association (Irrigation Department) will stage a dharna in front of the office of the Chief Engineer, Irrigation Department, in Chandigarh on August 5. This was stated by Mr Harisingh Purrewsal, president of the association on Monday.

Blood donation:
The Lok Seva Manch, Devigarh in association with the local Rajindra Hospital, blood bank organised a blood donation camp at Devigarh on Sunday in memory of Shaheed Udham Singh. A team of the Hospital blood bank collected 50 units of blood.

Honoured:
Noted Punjabi poet Arif Gobindpuri was honoured here on Monday by Phagwara and Alahi Lekhari Sabhas. He was presented a memento and a citation on the occasion.

Donated: The local Jhang Sabha on Tuesday donated Rs 12,000 to the Army Central Welfare Fund. A cheque for this amount was presented to the Adviser to the Administrator, Ms Vineeta Rai, by Mr W.R. Dua, General Secretary of the sabha.

Saplings planted: Lions Club Chandigarh Nightingale celebrated Vanotsav on Tuesday by planting 50 saplings in the premises of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Sohana, near Chandigarh. The club also donated a 1000-litre water tank to the school.

PANCHKULA
Probe sought:
Mr H.S. Swan, Vice-President of the Haryana unit of the BJP, has demanded a high-level probe into the alleged incident of the gang rape of a 14-year-old student of a local school at Pinjore. Mr Swan said he would write to the Chief Minister to get the case probed to bring the culprits to book. Ms Rekha Sharma, spokesperson of the Panchkula district unit of the party, also expressed concern over the alleged move to hush up the case.

Satsang: The residents of Harmilap Nagar will organise a satsang and pravachan in Shri Harmilap Prem Mandir near Industrial Area, Phase-II, Panchkula, from August 5 to 8.top

FATEHABAD
Quiz contest:
The local Dayaram Public School organised an inter-house quiz competition for the school children on Monday. Mrs Indira Bishnoi, chairperson of the local Panchayat Samiti was the chief guest. Penny House team comprising Karan Mehta and Hina Mittal and Marigold House team comprising Nakul and Palak were adjudged first in the junior and senior groups respectively.

HISAR
Road mishap:
One person was killed and four others were injured, one of them seriously, in a head-on-collision between a Haryana Roadways bus and a "Matador" between Balak and Padra villages, about 40 km from here, on Wednesday. The victim has been identified as Ram Chander (40), resident of Ghursal village. Seriously injured Dharam Pal has been hospitalised in Barwala. A case under Sections 279, 337, 304 A and 427 of the IPC has been registered against Shemsher, the driver of the bus.

Case registered: The Narnaund police has registered a case under Section 376 of the IPC against five persons in connection with the gang-rape of a mentally deranged woman on the night of July 26. According to the police Hawa Singh a resident of Budana village, was arrested on Monday while four others — Jai Bhagwan, Shamsher, Jaivir and Ram Kishan — were yet to be arrested. The woman, a resident of Kila Mohalla, Hansi, had gone to Narnaund, where these person allegedly took her in a jeep to a field and raped her.

Bhukkal joins INLD: Mr Dholu Ram Bhukkal, Municipal Commissioner, has left the Haryana Vikas Party along with his supporters and joined the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD). Mr Bhukkal announced this decision in the presence of Mr Ajay Singh Chautala, state president of the youth wing of the INLD, at his residence on Monday. Mr Chautala welcomed Mr Bhukkal to the party.

PANIPAT
Sealed:
The Pollution Control Board has sealed an industrial unit at Saini Colony here for allegedly causing environmental pollution in the area. The residents of the colony lodged a complaint with the Pollution Control Board alleging that the Rajendra Fabrics unit was releasing polluted water in the area and the water spread on the main streets of the colony creating problems for the residents. The unit was inspected by the board officers who sealed the unit.

SIRSA
One held:
Gulab Singh Rai, a resident of Ther Mohalla here, was arrested by the police on Monday under the Excise Act from Marekan village in the district. The police also seized one still, a huge quantity of lahan and illicit liquor from him. The SSP, Mr B.S. Sandhu, said here on Monday that the police had arrested Gurjant Singh under the Arms Act near Sanuwala village in the district on Monday and recovered one unlicensed .315 bore pistol from his possession.

Arrested: A car driver here was arrested by Ding police on Monday in connection with a criminal case registered against him under Sections 279, 337, 338 and 427 of the IPC, for rash and negligent driving. Harjinder Singh of Moriwala village alleged in a complaint that he was seriously injured and his three wheeler was damaged in an accident with a car being driven by the driver.

BILASPUR
Grievances redressed :
The SDM, Mr Rajdev Singh Jasrotia, presided over a "Shikayat Nivaran Shivir" held at Ranikotla, 40 km from here on Monday. About 44 cases were settled at the Shivir. At another such camp organised at Kutheda, 50 km from here, and presided over by the SDM, Mr B.L.Raghava, 27 out of a total of 96 cases were settled on the spot.

KULU
Suspended:
The Regional Manager of the HRTC here said on Monday that a conductor, Jasmer Singh had been put under suspension for misbehaving with a 70 year-old man in a bus. An inquiry has been initiated against the conductor.
