Human skeleton found in toilet block

CHANDIGARH, Dec 2 — The police has recovered a skeleton of a person from an unused toilet block, near the slaughter house, in the Industrial Area here today.

Sources said that information was received that the body of a person had been lying in the block for the past many days. When a police party reached the site it saw that the body had been reduced to a skeleton, the face of which was buried in filth.

The skeleton was removed from the site and sent to the General Hospital for a post mortem. It was not immediately known whether it was a male or female and what was the cause of death. Further investigations are on.

2 hurt in fridge fire
In a bizarre accident, two young women received burn injuries when a fridge caught fire this evening.

According to police sources, Asha (24) and her sister-in-law, Rani (15), were alone at home when the fridge allegedly caught fire due to a suspected short-circuit. The two tried to put out the fire but received severe burn injuries and were rushed to the PGI by the police.

Car mishap
A resident of Sector 21 was injured when his car was hit by a truck. Wg Cdr Ajay Kapoor (retd) was travelling by is car (DBS-1075) when it was hit by a truck (HR-07-7815) near the Sector 27-28 traffic lights. He received minor injuries, while the car was damaged.

The truck driver, Surinder Singh, a resident of Una, was arrested and a case under Section 279, IPC, was registered at the Sector 26 police station. The driver was later bailed out.

Motor cycle stolen
Sector 33 resident Vimal reported that his motor cycle (CHOI-U-9837) was stolen from his residence last night. A case under Section 379, IPC, has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

Held for gambling
Raj Kumar, a resident of Sector 52, and Ashok Kumar and Sohan Singh, hailing from Sector 29 and Hallo Majra, respectively, were arrested from the village for gambling at a public place. A case under Sections 13, 3 and 67 of the Gambling Act has been registered at the Sector 31 police station.

2 get remand
The accused in yesterday's snatching incident, J.S. Manshahia and Ravinder Singh, were produced in a court at Kharar and were remanded in police custody for one day for recovering the snatched items which include a mobile phone and a gold chain.

While Manshahia was arrested immediately after the incident, Ravinder surrendered before the police late last night.

Case registered
Mr Jagdish Chander, a resident of Phase VII, has complained to the police that his son-in-law, Mr Lovneesh Sharma of Ambala, had allegedly beaten up the former’s daughter and turned her out of the house. A case has been registered under Sections 406 and 498 of the IPC.

Arrested
Talwinder and Ravi have been arrested in connection with an attempt to commit a theft in a house in Sector 70 here on Wednesday. A case has been registered against them under Sections 380,511 and 454 of the IPC

Liquor seized
The police on Thursday seized 15 bottles of liquor from Rajender Kumar, alias Babloo, a resident of Bir Gaggar village. In another incident, the police seized 18 bottles, 16 quarts and 12 nips of liquor from Manjit Singh, a resident of Naggal village.

A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered at Chandi Mandir police station.

Crime confession
Joginder, Sher Singh and Sunil, allegedly involved in a series of crime in the township and arrested by the police a few days ago, have confessed their crime. They stated that they were involved in thefts and other crime in the town that took place on July 13 and November 4 and 29.

The police had earlier recovered goods worth Rs 75,000 from their possession. Today it recovered a ring, a fan, a VCP, CDs and a television set from Joginder. An LPG cylinder was recovered from Sher Singh. The articles recovered today are valued at Rs 83,500. Back

Nepalese musical group enthrals

CHANDIGARH, Dec 2 — Anand Karkie group of artistes enthralled music loving crowd with folk songs at Tagore Theatre here this evening. The crowd comprised largely persons from Nepal, the home ground of the performers.

Besides Nepalese tunes, the artistes impressed with three Hindi songs and one Punjabi number. The programme was organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

The musical group on this tour visited Mussourie and Dehra Dun before reaching the city. They proceed to Delhi after today’s performance. The group has gained international recognition with performances at London and Bangkok, besides several other venues.Back


 

Price Watch
The housewife should be happy

CHANDIGARH, Dec 2 — The vegetables are within the easy reach of the housewife since the last two days as the winter has brought a variety of fresh vegetables in the market.

Seasonal vegetables like cauliflower, green peas, carrots, French beans and spinach are all affordable and cheaper in Sector 15 market, with ‘A’ grade quality cauliflower selling at Rs 4 a kg and green peas at Rs 12 a kg. However, cauliflower and peas were selling at Rs 6 and 15, respectively, for the last few days. The prices have come down due to abundant arrivals in the market.

The price of spinach is Rs 4 for a bundle, while mushrooms for exotic cooking are selling at Rs 9 a packet. Onions, garlic and ginger, the main ingredient of Indian cuisine, is also cheaper now with fresh arrivals from Maharashtra and the adjoining areas. Onions are being sold at Rs 10 a kg., garlic for Rs 60 a kg., and ginger is selling today at Rs 40 a kg. Tomatoes are going for Rs 12 a kg as the fresh crop from Himachal Pradesh is flooding the market.

The price of radish has also come down from Rs 5 a kg. from last week. Today it is selling at Rs 3 a kg at the vegetable market. Brinjals are priced at Rs 10 while okra/lady finger is being sold for Rs 15 a kg. However, lemon has seen little variance in its price since last one week. It is stable at Rs 14 to 15 a kg.

In the green vegetable segment fenubreek is for Rs 4 a packet. French beans are Rs 20 a kg with green capsicum going for Rs 30 to 35 a kg.

The prices of the seasonal fruits are also coming down with dates priced at Rs 30 a kg. Dates were selling at Rs 40 to 50 till last week. Grapes are at Rs 80 a kg maintaining their price since last two weeks. But bananas are cheaper today selling for Rs 12 a dozen. Good quality apples from Kinnaur are priced at Rs 27 a kg with oranges becoming more reasonable at Rs 40 a kg.Back

 


Dev Samaj win cricket tourney

CHANDIGARH, Dec 2 — IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, won the UT Inter-School Under-19 Cricket Tournament for Girls, which concluded here yesterday.

In the final, Dev Samaj scored an eight-wicket victory over Government Model High School, Sector 28. Batting first, GMHS-28 scored 128 runs for eight wickets in 25 overs. Amita and Sunita took three wickets each, while Anuradha claimed two wickets.

In reply, Dev Samaj achieved the target in 20.3 overs. Nitasha, the captain scored 38 not out. Sunita scored 33 runs.

Sport fest in UT: Chandigarh will host the National Women Sport Festival from December 18 to 21 in badminton, lawn tennis and table tennis. The city team will be selected on the basis of selection trials, to be held on December 7 and 8 as per the venues: badminton — Sector 42 Badminton Hall, lawn tennis — Lake Club, Tennis Courts, Sector 6, table tennis — Sector 23 TT Hall.Back


Inter-college title for DAV-10

CHANDIGARH, Dec 2 — DAV College, Sector 10, won the Punjab University Inter-College Cricket Championship, which concluded here today. In the final, DAV College out-played SD College, Sector 32, by 31 runs. Punjab University campus were placed third.

In the final SD College won the toss and put DAV in to bat. Deepak Thakur was the first to go. Skipper Yuvraj Singh made 46 runs in 32 deliveries, including two sixes and six fours. Rajinder Chaudhary and Vinod Thakur scored 26 runs each. Opener Vipin Sagar scored 34 runs after facing 111 deliveries. Nagesh Gupta and Amit Uniyal captured two wickets each by giving 27 and 38 runs, respectively. The DAV team scored 195 runs in 49.3 overs.

In reply, SD College were bundled out for 154 runs in 44.4 overs. Nagesh Gupta scored 31 runs. Harsh Amarnath and Anurag Sharma made 20 and 25 runs, respectively.

In the match for third place, PU campus defeated Government College, Ludhiana, by seven wickets. Government College won the toss and elected to bat first. They scored 179 runs in 49.3 overs, with Tarun scoring 47 runs. Jaiver claimed five wickets for 17 runs, including a hat-trick.

In reply, PU campus reached the target in 28.5 overs. Arun scored 85 runs in 67 deliveries. This included 17 fours and a six. Jaswinder was the other main scorer with 39 runs. Mithun claimed two wickets.

Ruchika to lead: Ruchika Chawla will lead the Chandigarh junior women’s under-19 team in the North Zone Inter-State Junior Women Cricket Tournament, which begins tomorrow at Panchkula, according to Ms Archana Sharma, Secretary of the Chandigarh Women Cricket Association. The team is: Ruchika Chawla, Reenu, Shalini, Taranjit Kaur, Sunita, Anuradha, Nitasha Kaushik, Jyoti, Kavita, Nitasha Jaswal, Tripit, Parul, Neena, Monika Gujral and Rashi Pathak.Back
