Condolence meeting: At a condolence meeting held here on Wednesday the faculty, staff and students of Punjab Agricultural University mourned the death of Dr Sadhu Singh Kahlon, eminent economist and former Professor-cum-Head, Department of Economics and Sociology, of the university. Dr H.S. Garcha, Dean, College of Basic Science and Humanities, recalled the distinguished services of Dr Kahlon.

Awarded: Dr J.K. Chawla, Associate Professor, Department of Soil and Water Engineering, Punjab Agricultural University, has been selected for the Jain Irrigation Award for 1998-99 for outstanding research contribution in the area of drip irrigation. The award was announced at the 34th annual convention of the Indian Society of Agricultural Engineering held recently at the CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar.

Promoted: Mr S.P. Singla was promoted as the Under Secretary General of the PSEB here on Tuesday. He was earlier serving as the Superintendent, according to a PSEB circular issued here on Tuesday.top

Cassette released: Mr Ajit Sailani, President of the Punjabi Film Producers Association, released a Hindi album sung by Charanjeet at a function held at a restaurant in Phase V here on Wednesday.

Shooting: Shooting for a musical TV programme Taal Se Taal Mila was held at a restaurant in Phase V here on Wednesday. The shooting was done under the direction of Sandeep Chugh.top

ROHTAK
Police seizures:
The district police has claimed to have solved eight cases with recovery of stolen goods worth Rs 2.96 lakh in the month of November. The SSP, Mr P.K. Agarwal, has also claimed to have seized 780 bottles of English and local wine, 2,586 pouches of liquor along with four pistols, two country made revolvers, and two knives.

Crushed: Meena (25), wife of Ranbir Singh, a resident of Ekta Colony and her niece Sonu (8), were crushed to death by a truck on Circular Road here on Tuesday. The truck driver and cleaner have absconded. The truck has been impounded by the police and a case registered against the accused.

Two sentenced:
The District and Sessions Judge has sentenced two murder accused to life imprisonment. According to the information received here on Tuesday a case was registered against Madoo Ram and Manga Ram of Aboobshaher village for killing Sikander and injuring two others at Mandi Dabwali on September 7, 1996. After a prolonged hearing the judge passed the sentence along with a fine of Rs 750 each and a three month of additional jail in lieu thereof.

Seven arrested: The district police has on Tuesday arrested a liquor smuggler, Budh Ram under The Excise Act from Jamal village, whereas, Naresh Kumar, Ranji Lal of Sirsa and Gokul Chand of Dabwali were arrested under the Gambling Act. Mukhtair Singh of Rajpura village and Suraj Bhan and Jagdish Ram of Odhan village were arrested for assaulting people.

KULU
No-confidence motion:
The BJP councillors along with one Congress member has moved a no-confidence motion against the Congress president of the local Municipal Council. Six out of 11 members voted against the motion. According to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Ashwani Kapoor, December 30 has been fixed for the voting. it will take place in the presence of the Assistant Deputy Commissioner.

NURPUR
Take over:
The HP State Civil Supply Corporation has finally taken over the local gas agency from the HP Cooperative Consumer Store on Monday. It had sublet the same to latter in 1987, according to Mr J.P. Kalia, area manager of the corporation. The Managing Director of the corporation had issued an order in this regard on December 24.

Appointment condemned:
The district chapter of the Himachal Medical Officers Association at a meeting held here on Tuesday condemned the appointment of an HP Administrative Service officer as the Additional Director in the Health Department. It urged the government to continue the house rent allowance at 10 per cent of the basic pay. The following were elected office-bearers of the district chapters of the Association: president — Dr J.P. Kaushik; secretary — Dr Ashok Handa; and press secretary — Dr Udit Kumar.
