JCT, Churchill Bros in last six

CALCUTTA, Feb 14 (PTI) — JCT Phagwara qualified to the super-six stage as they held a determined Tollygunge Aggragami to a 1-1 draw in their last group-A match of the third National Football League at the Rabindra Sarovar Stadium here today.

The Phagwara outfit capitalised on some shoddy marksmanship by the home team to escape with a draw and romp into the last six stage with 17 points after completing their first phase engagements.

The millmen shot into the lead in the 34th minute of the contest through the hard-working Surjit Singh, but Tollygunge neutralised the lead in the 16th minute of the second session with substitute Prodyut Roy finding the target in a fast-paced encounter.

The home team had themselves to blame for not pulling off the much-needed victory as they not only missed a penalty but frittered away a number of scoring opportunities in both sessions.

Debutants Tollygunge thus complete their first phase engagements with 14 points and bow out of the championship.

JCT drew first blood when Surjit Singh broke through the defence with deft footwork and placed the ball to the left of the Tollygunge custodian Sumit Mukherjee.

Trailing by a solitary goal at the interval, Tollygunge played their hearts out in the second half and managed to restore parity with substitute Prodyut scoring a lovely field goal.

The home team, desperate for a win to keep their hopes alive in the high-profile championship, began with a flourish as they launched a series of attacks from both flanks, but failed to get their acts together inside the box.

Tollygunge had themselves to blame for not forging ahead in the 27th minute as their Sri Lankan recruit Roshan Pereira quite inexplicably missed a penalty much to the dismay of the home crowd.

JCT custodian Virender Singh displayed good anticipation as he flung himself full length to his left to stop the ball.

Referee T.A. Hakim of Kerala awarded the penalty to Tollygunge, when striker Chibuzor was brought down by a JCT defender inside the box, but the home team could not take advantage.

After conceding the first goal, Tollygunge seemed to be a little demoralised allowing their rivals to come out of their defensive groove and make a few forays into the Tollygunge citadel.

The home team could have opened their account as early as the seventh minute of the contest when Bastab Roy managed to pierce the JCT defence, but volleyed straight to goalkeeper.

Pereira, who appeared to be a trifle off-colour today, muffed at least two easy scoring opportunities in the opening session and squandered another chance after the lemon break.

MUMBAI: Substitute Nitin Shetty’s 86th minute goal helped lowly placed local outfit Air-India upset Churchill Brothers, Goa, in their last match from group-A of the National Football League here today.

Despite losing to Air-India the Goan outfit managed to make it to the super league stage with a better goal average. Churchill have 14 points from 10 matches while Air-India are at the bottom of the table with seven points from 10 outings.

It was indeed a disappointing performance by the Goan outfit who had managed to ground Air-India 5-1 at home when the two sides had met in Goa earlier.

Today they failed to rise to the occasion and put up a totally disjointed show.

Shetty, who replaced striker Khalid Jamil in the 71st minute of the match, made use of the first opportunity he could get when another substitute Abbas Ali Rizvi, who replaced winger Surjeet Tigga in the 65th minute, smartly back heeled a short pass for Shetty to do the rest.

Air-India started off with a positive note and managed a good move in the 30th minute when Jamil’s try off defender Henry Piccardo cross was well saved by Churchill custodian Edward Ansah.

Four minutes later Tigga’s close range shot was well saved by Ansah. Soon after Churchill got a chance on a platter but Air-India goalkeeper Partha Das did well to foil defender Danzie Ferrao’s attempt by rushing forward and by not giving enough room to take his shot.

Bagan qualify

MARGAO: Mohun Bagan today booked their place in the super six stage of the National Football League with an impressive 3-0 win over Goa’s Dempo Sports Club in their last group-A encounter at the Nehru Stadium here.

Bagan drew the first blood in the 19th minute of play through striker Jo Paul Ancheri and then consolidated the lead in dying minutes of the first half, again through Ancheri, after missing a couple of chances.

Again it was Ancheri who created the plot for the third goal. Satyajit Chatterjee accepted a pass from Ancheri inside the box and beat Dempo ‘keeper Sharma to his left.

With this win, Bagan topped the group with 17 points. Though JCT Phagwara too have the same number of points, they have an inferior goal difference compared to the Calcutta team, who are the defending champions.

Churchill Brothers with 14 points are the other team to enter the super league from the group inspite of their loss to Mumabi’s Air India in an away match.

Tollygunge Agragami of Calcutta, the group leaders till half way stage, could not make it to the second round as they finished fourth with 14 points, same as Churchill but with an inferior goal difference.

Colourful start to National Games

IMPHAL, Feb 14 (PTI) — The rich cultural heritage of ‘the land of jewels’, Manipur, was in abundant display as the fifth National Games was inaugurated bringing the biggest sporting event of the north-eastern region to fruition here today.

President K.R. Narayanan declared the games open at the Khuman Lampak main stadium in the heart of Imphal after exhorting the youth to vigorously pursue sport which cut across all barriers and spread equality.

The newly-built facility was packed to more than its 20,000 capacity as the entire Imphal city turned out to cheer the participants for the 12-day event running upto February 25.

Manipur bodybuilder Maipak Singh, former ‘Mr India’ who took part in the 1971 ‘Mr Universe’ contest at Athens, lit the National Games flame after the torch was relayed in the final stages by Nilkamal Singh, the first Olympian from the state, and his fellow hockey internationals Tiken Singh and Thoiba Singh.

Diminutive woman weightlifter, Nameirakpam Kunjarani Devi took oath on behalf of an assembly of well over 7000 participants in the games who will compete in 27 medal events.

First Lady Usha Narayanan, Union Minister of State for Sports Uma Bharti, Manipur Governor O.N. Shrivastava, Chief Minister W. Nipamacha Singh, Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Mahanta and his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart Mukut Mithi and Indian Olympic Association President Suresh Kalmadi were among the host of dignitaries present.

In a function lasting over three-and-a-half hours which symbolised national integration through sports and the effort to bring international standard infrastructure for the highly talented sportspersons from the north-eastern region, age-old Manipur music and art forms mingled with the formal part of the ceremony.

The function began with the playing of ‘Manipur Sana Leimayon (Manipur my golden land) in traditional Khongjon Parva (folk) style and the entire stadium erupted in applause as the daring sky diving display by Indian Air Force followed.

The President, on his arrival at the stadium soon after, was received to the music of lameen pena (ancient stringed instrument of Manipur) and the blowing of conches.

The Indian Tricolour along with the flags of the Indian and Manipur Olympic associations went up before the ceremonial marchpast of the 32 teams, including services, began.

Members of the Manipur police led the group bearing saffron, white and green flags denoting the national Tricolour followed by the athletes, last year’s hosts and overall champions Karnataka leading the way.

Hosts Manipur, who have entered the biggest squad in the games numbering over 700, marched in last, smartly attired in maroon blazers and white trousers to receive the loudest cheers.

N.G. Dingko Singh, the Bangkok boxing hero from Manipur who claimed India’s first Asian Games gold in 16 years, was accorded the honour of carrying the Services flag. The Navy Chief Petty Officer is participating for his employers.

The marchpast lasted over half an hour before ‘Sangai’, the brow antlered deer which is the games mascot, came prancing into the stadium and hundreds of athletes surged forward to take photographs.

Sangai, a deer species found only in Manipur, is an endangered species and only a few hundred survive now.

The mascot, a saffron-coloured balloon-type costume worn by an artist, surrounded by dancing young girls dressed as ‘Sangais’, were welcomed by 100 traditionally dressed women.

The President’s speech was followed his declaring open the games to the sounding of conch shells, release of pigeons and balloons with firing of guns in the background.

The oath-taking ceremony was followed by a cultural programme, the highlight of which was the earliest form of Manipuri dance, ‘Lai Haraoba dance’, the merrymaking to please the guardian deity of a village performed over the ages.

It was followed by 12 tribal dance forms from various districts of Manipur before the ceremony came to an end with a performance of the ‘pung cholom’.

Sampras withdraws; Mamiit stuns Chang

SAN JOSE (California), Feb 14 (Reuters) — The Sybase Open was hit by a double whammy last night when top seed Pete Sampras withdrew with an ankle injury and fourth seed Michael Chang was ousted by little-known Cecil Mamiit.

Sampras pulled out before his semifinal against Mark Philippoussis of Australia and the up-and-coming Mamiit upset Chang 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the other semifinals.

With the default of Andre Agassi earlier in the week and the exit of Sampras and Chang, the $ 350,000 tournament has lost its three biggest draws.

A match between qualifier Mamiit and third-seeded Philippoussis was undoubtedly not what organisers had in mind for today’s finale, although it will offer quite a contrast between the slight, swift American and the tall, hard-serving Australian "Scud".

Sampras was injured on Friday in the sixth game of the second set of his quarter-final victory over Bernd Karbacher, when he hit an off-balance forehand return of serve and strained his anterior tibial muscle/tendon.

He felt the ankle stiffen overnight and when he woke up yesterday morning and tried to practice, he couldn’t run.

The 120th ranked Mamiit’s victory over his hero Chang was somewhat surprising, given that the veteran jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set and appeared to have the match well under control.

The 22-year-old Filipino-American grew up in Los Angeles worshipping the Chinese-American Chang and has copied some of his style, but rarely looked at his opponent during the match.

"I tried not to let that come into my mind," Mamiit said. "It was me against him. It’s my duty to fight for every point."

The quick and game Mamiit slowly worked his way into the match, out-slugging Chang from the forehand side, cracking precise first serves and keeping up with the legendary runner in end-to-end sprints.

In the second set, Mamiit broke Chang to go up 3-1 when the former world number two committed one of his 23 unforced errors. He broke Chang again to move ahead 5-1 when Chang double faulted.

The 5-foot-8 Mamiit, the 1996 US collegiate champion, served with authority throughout the contest and won the second set by posting a service winner.

Mamiit immediately broke the 5-foot-9 Chang to open the third set on a forehand volley winner and never looked back. Chang fought off one match point at 4-5 with a service winner, but Mamiit clinched the battle with a huge serve and swinging forehand volley winner.

DUBAI: Jerome Golmard reached the first final of his career when he upset second-seeded Spaniard and French Open champion Carlos Moya 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the Dubai Open last night.

In today’s final, Golmard will face the winner of the second semifinal between Andrew Illie and Nicolas Kiefer — a match which has been postponed because of heavy rain.

Moya claimed the only break of the opening set to lead 2-1 as his French opponent self-destructed with three unforced errors followed by a double-fault.

But Golmard turned the match around in the second set by winning three of the first four games to love. He then dropped just five points in five games to lead 4-1.

Moya staged a fightback to level at 4-4 and held break points on Golmard’s next two service games. But the Frenchman held off the threat and broke Moya at the fourth attempt to claim the set.

Although Moya broke in the first game of the deciding set, Golmard’s willingness to challenge from the net gave him the edge. He won the next four games to take firm control.

Golmard said he would prefer to play Illie in the final to avenge a defeat at this year’s Australian Open. "I’ll try to enjoy the match and, if I play as I’ve played already, then I have a good chance to win."

Astle, Harris help Kiwis romp home

DENEDIN, Feb 14 (Reuters) — A gutsy 95 by Nathan Astle and Belligerent hitting from Chris Harris guided New Zealand to an exciting three-wicket victory over South Africa in their limited overs match today.

They won with five balls to spare, scoring 215 for seven in reply to South Africa's 211 all out in 49.1 overs.

New Zealand looked to be heading for defeat when they slumped to 56 for four but a 90-run fifth wicket stand between Astle and Mathhew Bell set up a tense finish.

Bell, normally an opener, was forced to bat at six in his third one-day international after being called up as an emergency replacement of the morning of the match when Roger Twose strained his back.

While Bell grafted 37 from 76 balls, Astle curbed the naturally attacking game that saw him smash Shaun Pollock for six in the third over of the innings but still reached 50 from 58 balls with five fours and the six.

Just when Astle seemed certain to post his sixth one-day century he was bowled by Lance Klusener and South Africa sense the chance of an upset.

But Harris, playing his 21st one-day match, pulled Klusener for six in his next over to ease the pressure and, despite the run out of captain Dion Nash in the 48th over, was able to steer New Zealand to victory.

Earlier, Jacques Kallis had scored a splendid century to keep the touring team's hopes alive after a rash of poor strokes from the top order.

Dismissed in the penultimate over for 100 from 117 balls with 10 fours and a six, Kallis steered the innings from 56 for four to 211 all out in the last over.

Kallis fell to left arm fast bowler Geoff Allott who went on to complete career-best one-day figures of four for 35 by bowling Pat Symcox with the next ball.

All-rounder Chris Cairns could be out of action for up to three weeks after tearing a calf muscle in attempting a quick single during the New Zealand innings.

Team physiotherapist Mark Harrison said Cairns would definitely miss the second and third matches of the series of six one-day games. The second match is in Christchurch on Wednesday.

Kapil condemns BCCI for lack of policy

CHENNAI, Feb 14 (UNI) — Former India all rounder and captain Kapil Dev has criticised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for lack of proper planning and policy when it comes to preparing sporting wickets.

Kapil, the world record holder for having captured most number of wickets in a Test match, faced a volley of questions from audience presiding over a private function in the city on Friday night.

"It is the job of the administrators," Kapil averred when asked why fast and bouncy wickets were not being prepared. Kapil heads the pitches committee on the BCCI, it may be recalled.

"The future of Indian cricket is bright and there are a lot of talented youngsters, Kapil said asked about the new opening batsman in Indian cricket, Sadagopan Ramesh. "But he has to work hard to achieve greater progress", he said.

"Yes, I hope India wins the World Cup", Kapil said asked about India’s chances this time. But South Africa is the team to beat, he said adding he was impressed with the system in that country which helped to turn out talented players.

Kumble’s feat of capturing all 10 wickets in an innings was extraordinary, Kapil said when asked to compare it with his own feat of 175 not out which turned the match against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup.

"A bid to malign Indian cricket"

MUMBAI, Feb 14 (PTI) — Indian cricket board chief Raj Singh Dungarpur yesterday termed as "an effort to malign Indian cricket" the allegation of South African coach Bob Woolmer that his team was approached to tank a one-day international here.

"It is a joke. He has taken three years to mention.... it is nothing but to malign us," Dungarpur said when asked about his reaction to the allegation mentioned in Woolmer’s diary for the "Wisden Cricket Monthly".

According to Woolmer, the South Africans were asked to lose a one-off one-dayer in aid of former cricketer Mohinder Amarnath held at Wankhede Stadium in December 1996.

Dungarpur said if someone really had approached the South Africans with such a demand, they should have informed the Indian board at that time itself.

Following allegations of match fixing by former all-rounder Manoj Prabhakar, the board had set up a one-man fact-finding commission under former Chief Justice of India Y.B. Chandrachud in 1997 and it had absolved all the cricketers of the charges.

India should make grassy tracks: Akram

KOCHI, Feb 14 (PTI) — Pakistan captain Wasim Akram yesterday found faults in Indian wickets saying the traditional way of preparation, slower ones to help spinners, hampered the growth of pace bowlers.

Akram said India had the potential of producing speedsters more frequently, but bland wickets gave no help to upcoming youngsters.

"India should have positive wickets that would help both pace and spin alike. Pitches must have more grass on it to help the fast bowlers," Akram opined.

At joint press conference here, Pakistan coach Javed Miandad said having fast wickets would help Indian bowlers to perform well on the away tours.

Miandad said the Chennai pitch was positive but he was not happy with the Ferozeshah Kotla wicket in Delhi.

Asked whether there will be any change in the squad for the inaugural tie of the Asian Test championship in Calcutta, Akram said there will be no change in the team unless if there was any injury to the players.

Akram said winning the toss in Delhi Test was crucial and by winning it, India had won the match 50 per cent.

The coach said considering some dubious decisions in both Chennai and Delhi Test, neutral umpires were a necessity for Tests as well as one-day internationals.

Punjab restrict Hyderabad

HYDERABAD, Feb 14 (PTI) — Punjab bowlers restricted Hyderabad to a moderate 206 for seven wickets on the first day of the four-day Ranji Trophy super league match here today.

Electing to bat first, Hyderabad lost opener Daniel Manohar (6) in the fifth over itself, caught in the third slip by Dinesh Mongia off Bharath Bhushan.

Thereafter a 121-run partnership between opener Arvind Shetty (77) and batsman Nanda Kishore (37) steadied the innings for the hosts. Kishore (37) was the next to go, caught by Sanjay Kumar off Bhushan.

Shetty (77) was caught in the first slip brilliantly by Pankaj Dharmani, giving the first of the three wickets for Sandeep Singh. His valuable knock came in 253 minutes off 192 balls with 10 boundaries and a six.

Sarandeep Singh stole the limelight on the first day claiming three vital wickets in 34 overs by giving 72 runs. Bhushan claimed two wickets in his spell of 19 overs.

At draw of stumps, Youraj Singh (24 batting) and Narender Pal Singh (9 batting) were at the crease.

Haryana bundled out for 206

BANGALORE, Feb 14 (PTI) — Haryana were restricted to 206 runs in their first innings by hosts Karnataka on the first day of the Ranji Trophy cricket tie at Chinnaswamy Stadium here today.

In reply, the hosts were 54 for one in 14 overs, with Sujith Somasunder (18) and P. Khaleel (9) at the crease at close of the play.

Opting to bat after winning the toss, Haryana were in deep trouble when their top-order batsmen fell cheaply against the fierce attacks by Karnataka bowlers Mansoor Ali Khan and D. Ganesh, who took four and three wickets respectively.

Haryana lost the wicket of opener Jetinder Singh when he was caught behind by S. Shiraguppi off Ganesh without opening the account. Rajesh Puri (38), A. Kaypee (36) and Dhanraj Singh (35) were the only Haryana batsmen who resisted the Karnataka attack.

Skipper Ajay Jadeja came in to bat as number six, could score only 15. D. Ganesh uprooted his stumps. D. Ganesh bowled 15 no balls in two spells, while Haryana’s Vineet also bowled nine no balls in seven overs.

Devinder, Abhey rescue Railways
From Our Sports Reporter

PATIALA, Feb 14 — The cream of the Railway batting dug itself in a hole before Abhey Sharma (78) and Devinder Singh (75 not out) rescued them with a fighting partnership as the hosts scored 222 for 8 against Maharashtra at draw of stumps of day one of the Ranji Trophy super league match played at the DCW Sports Stadium here today.

The first hour of play was fruitful for the visitors as medium pacers Iqbal Siddique and Sachin Nair had railmen reeling at a desperate 58 for 5 before Abhey Sharma and Devinder Sharma provided some stability with a useful 113-run sixth wicket partnership.

That the hosts were on the mat in the pre-lunch session itself was due to some indiscreet strokeplay with none of the top order batsmen moving their feet and attempting drives away from the body in the process nicking the ball to keeper Sanjay Khandalkar who excelled with some fine glovework.

Opener Asif Murtaza, who had a wretched debut against Orissa at the same venue last week, again seemed to be ill at ease facing the new ball before Sachin Nair ended his short and agonising stay in the middle as the batsman slashed at an outswinger only to see Surinder Bhave latch on to the blinder art wide gully.

Murtaza's dismissal effected a slide which was arrested in the pre-lunch session by determined partnership between Abhey and Devinder.

At 171 for 5 Abhey drove without moving his feet to give Khandalkar his fourth catch of the innings.

With the railmen yet to recover from the dismissal, Iqbal Siddique trapped both Devinder Singh and Dharminder Mishra plumb in front of the wicket with deliveries which skidded after hitting the surface.

Siddique bowled with verve and accuracy to finish with 5 for 54.
