Move to rename Highway No 10 HISAR, Jan 4 There is a demand to rename National Highway number 10 named after Maharaja Agrasen. The highway connects Delhi with Ferozepur in Punjab. Recently the Haryana Jat Sabha demanded that the highway should be renamed after Deenbandhu Chaudhary Chhotu Ram. The Sabha sought that the highway from Delhi to Hisar should be named after Sir Chhotu Ram. From Hisar onwards, the highway according to the Jat Sabha, should be named after Maharaja Agrasen. The Aggarwal Seva Samiti has sharply reacted to the demand put forth by the Haryana Jat Sabha. A special resolution was passed here at the annual meeting of the Samiti yesterday. The Samiti warned against changing the name of the highway. The Samiti pointed out that the sentiments of millions of people were linked with Maharaja Agrasen. It said that Maharaja Agrasen did not belong to a particular sect but was an egalitarian ruler. It criticised the attempts by certain sections seeking to identify Maharaja Agrasen with a particular community. Maharaja Agrasen is said to have set up Agroha town 5,000 years ago. The ruins of the town can be seen along the same highway to the North- West of Hisar at Agroha. The highway is believed to have been used between Delhi and Multan. On this highway there are several big and small towns which include Rohtak, Hisar, Agroha, Fatehabad, Sirsa, Dabwali, Hansi, Bathinda and Fazilka. The Agroha Vikas Trust has been working for reviving the glory of Agroha. It has already constructed two big temples there. The site of the ruins has been acquired by the Archaeological Survey of India. The ruins are spread over an area of a few hundred square acres. Agroha Medical College, which has been in news recently due to stopping of aid to it by the government, also falls in the same town. The Chairman Agroha Vikas
Trust, Mr Nand Kishore Goenka, has also criticised the
attempts of changing the name of the national highway. He
said, it would be a betrayal to Indian culture and
national heritage. Because Maharaja Agrasen represented
the pristine glory of the nation. |
Fear due to rise in crime GURGAON, Jan 4 Notwithstanding the proactive measures claimed to have been taken by the police to ensure public peace, residents from all sections of the society here are in fear the way criminals continue to strike with impunity. Crime of various categories, especially thefts and burglaries, have risen, though police authorities have resorted to statistical jugglery by recording crimes on different dates under a common FIR. The way in which armed goons robbed the fourth floor of the local post office situated in the hub of the downtown Sadar Bazaar in broad daylight and escaped with Rs 12 lakh,a few days ago, has sent ripples among citizens. According to observers, the fact that the police has yet no clue about the criminals had not done any good to the already sagging image of the police. There are not many takers for the version of the district police chief, Mr Khusi Ram Dahiya, that efforts were being made to nab the criminals. There seems to be a pattern in the modus operandi of the gangsters operating not only in Gurgaon, but parts of South Haryana of which it is a part. Anti-social elements have shown tendency of lull in their activities, only to come with a vengeance. Renewed spate of crime continues after which criminals again go into a shell. However, they fix targets in other unmarked areas of South Haryana during this period. The crime rate shot up in this district during the run up to the end of the last year culminating in robbery in the Post office on December 31. It was in this spell that anti-social elements looted passengers of Jaipur-bound bus of Haryana Roadways Services of Chandigarh depot around the area of Wazirpur, near here. They made good with cash and jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh. The thefts and burglary, especially in the sectors along the National Highway have risen alarmingly. The rise in the thefts of vehicles has pressed panic button among residents. The all enveloping fog in the last few days appeared to have further helped the criminals. Following a spate of robberies, dacoities and other forms of crimes, the police authorities had devised a plan to thwart them. The strategy appeared to be successful with no report of major crime. But this proved synthetic with occurrence of major crimes. Significantly, crime continue in spite of the recent increase in the manpower in the district police force. Also, setting up of two additional police stations in the city appears to be inadequate. Analysing the increase in the crime rate, the district police chief said that the fast-paced expansion of the city had helped the criminals. Also, Gurgaon being in the vicinity of Delhi, had further complicated the situation for the district police. One police officer lamented that the public was also not forthright in cooperating with the police. Police authorities feel that the coming of two platoons of commandos to the district would give a boost to the drive against the anti-social elements. Meanwhile the police
claimed that it had arrested Sunil, a member of a
notorious interstate gang. The gang is alleged to have
been involved in the looting of more than Rs 8 lakh from
Sunbeam factory in Gurgaon. |
Grain market source of nuisance FATEHABAD: The location of the local grain market has of late become a cause of public nuisance. The grain market which is situated almost in the middle of the town has been causing a lot of problems to the local people. Fatehabad is one of the leading district headquarters of Haryana in the matter of agricultural production. The district recorded a second position in the whole of Haryana in wheat production. The area was also considered the cotton belt of the state till recently, but a steep fall in the cotton crop in recent years has snatched this reputation from the district. The local grain market is situated on the main national highway and is spread towards the Bhattu road. The market has more than 125 shops besides some booths. It was set up in 1960. Now the market is quite insufficient to cater to the needs of the area. The insufficiency of the market is exposed during wheat season when heaps and bags of wheat can be seen scattered on the adjoining Bhattu road, Model Town and the newly built unused vegetable market at the local Hisar road. Demands for an additional grain market have been raised on several occasions and at several levels. The Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, even acceded to the demand on his visit here last year and surveys were conducted to select a suitable site for an additional market by officials of the marketing board. But the local residents now feel that the grain market should be shifted from its present place instead of constructing an additional grain market, as it has become a source of nuisance now. The market becomes a virtual hell during the harvesting season, when every inch of the place besides the surrounding roads and vacant plots is filled with agricultural produce. Besides this, it becomes very difficult for road users to cross the Bhattu road on vehicles. Even the national highway near the market becomes a traffic hazard due to the heavy rush of tractor trailors to and from the grain market. Not only this, the presence of the grain market in the heart of the town is also a big source of pollution. A dense layer of dust can always be seen engulfing the entire region during the harvesting season. This becomes a constant source of asthmatic problems for residents residing near the market. Local people feel that it
is high time that the market is shifted from here to the
outskirts of the town. |
Extension of quota for SCs in House
opposed GURGAON, Jan 4 The Arakashan Samapti Abhiyan has urged intervention of the National Human Rights Commission against any possible move by the Centre to extend the duration of the reservations of seats in legislatures for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The Chairman of the Action Committee of the Arakshan Samapti Abhiyan, Mr Mange Ram Sharma, said that the Human Rights Commission had been represented as the issue concerned the human rights of a vast population of the country. The issue also related to the violation of Article 25 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights adopted by the General Assembly of the U.N.O. on December 16, 1996, and brought into force from March 23, 1976. According to him the Article 25 of the International Covenant, to which India was a signatory, provides that every citizen shall have the right and opportunity not only to vote but to be elected at the periodic elections to be held by universal and equal suffrage. Contrary to this, in India, a large number of Assembly and Lok Sabha seats are reserved for SCs and STs. People belonging to other castes and communities had no right to be elected from these constituencies. It has been pointed out to the Human Rights Commission. The letter alleged that
due to selfish political compulsions, this reservation
policy was sought to be continued by amending Article 334
of the Constitution. The already extended period for the
reservation policy expires on January 26, 2000, it was
added. |
