Major dies in Kupwara

JALANDHAR, July 5 — Major Kanwal Gulzar Singh, a resident of Miani village in Kapurthala district, sacrificed his life yesterday in counter-insurgency operations in Kupwara area in Jammu and Kashmir when he was ambushed by militants during a patrol.
The official was posted to 5/9 Gorkha Rifles on first commissioning and at present with 32 Rashtriya Rifles.
He will be cremated at Harnamdasspura cremation ground here on Tuesday.

Martyr's family adopted

AMRITSAR, July 5 — Authorities of the alma mater of Lance Naik Rakesh Kumar of 18 Garhwal Regiment, Sant Singh Sukha Singh Senior Secondary School, here today decided to adopt his family, including his widow Kanchan, a son and daughter. The Director of the school, Mr Jagdish Singh, told The Tribune reporter here Rakesh completed his matriculation from this school and was a distinguished hockey player. The entire school, staff and Principal paid rich tributes to Rakesh who achieved martyrdom fighting Pakistani intruders in the Kargil sector last week. A two-minute silence was observed in his memory, he added. The school management has given Rs 21,000 to the family besides offering free education to his children.

Latvian PM resigns
RIGA, July 5 (DPA) — Following the unexpected resignation of Latvian Prime Minister Vilis Kristopans today, the chief of the opposition People's Party, Mr Andris Skele, said he wanted to be the Prime Minister. Four of the parties in the Saeima, Latvia's Parliament, have started formal talks on the matter, the press agency Leta reported. Included in the negotiations are the People's Party, the right-wing Fatherland and Freedom, the Social Democrats and the New Party, which together control 63 of 100 seats in the Saeima. Just 50 votes are needed to elect a new government. But the Centrist Latvia's Way, Mr Kristopans' party, is not included in the talks, said Mr Maris Glinblats, chairman of the Fatherland and Freedom.Top
