Paes completes rare double

LONDON, July 5 (PTI) — India’s Leander Paes completed a rare double-title triumph at the All-England Club when he annexed mixed doubles title partnering American Lisa Raymond at Wimbledon here last night.

Paes, who won the men’s doubles crown with Mahesh Bhupathi beating the Dutch-American pair of Paul Haarhuis and Jared Palmer in four-set battle 6-7 (10/12) 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7/4), showed immense stamina in playing three matches in a day to emerge a worthy winner.

The top seeded pair of Paes and Raymond downed third seeds Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden and Russian pin-up girl Anna Kournikova 6-4 3-6 6-3 in the mixed doubles final to complete an Indian-American sweep at the famed lawns in the southwest London.

Americans Pete Sampras and Lindsay Davenport had won the men’s and women’s singles titles, respectively , and later Davenport, partnering compatriot Corina Morariu, bagged the women’s doubles crown.

Playing his third match of the day — Paes had stormed into the mixed doubles final with a straight-set 6-2 6-4 victory over Mark Knowles of the Bahamas and Elena Likhovtseva of Russia — the Indian dipped into all his energy reserves to pull of one of the best show by any Indian at the championships.

By winning the mixed doubles title, Paes also matched Bhupathi, who had become the first Indian to win a Grand Slam when he triumphed in French Open mixed event partnering Japan’s Rika Hiraki in 1997.

Earlier, Paes and Bhupathi had scripted a red-letter day for Indian tennis by winning back-to-back Grand Slam titles following their French Open triumph last month.

The world number one duo, with their Wimbledon victory, cemented their position on the ATP computer and could finish as top team at the end of this year, another historic feat awaiting the Indians.

The duo were in their third straight Grand Slam finals and only Aussies Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde have a better record, reaching five consecutive doubles final.

Paes-Bhupathi had lost to Bjorkman and Aussie Pal Rafter in an epic five-set final in the Australian Open in January.

With two Grand Slam titles behind them, the two would venture out on ATP Tour separately — Paes playing with Bjorkman in the U S and Bhupathi partnering Russia’s Yevgeny Kafelnikov to play in a European event.

The crack Indian duo, however, would be together again for the year’s last Grand Slam tournament — the U S Open — and will look to better their record at the Flushing Meadows where they reached the semifinals in 1997 and 1998.

Paes, Bhupathi prove critics wrong

NEW DELHI, July 5 (UNI) — It all started at a $ 50,000 challenger at Jakarta in October 1994.

The world No. 1 doubles pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, who on June 6 gave a cricket-crazed country a reason to celebrate by becoming the first Indians to taste Grand Slam success winning the French Open doubles, have continued their grand run winning ‘the championship’ at Wimbledon.

The formidable ‘Indian express’, as they are popularly called, who a few months back were plagued by injury and reports of mutual differences, have once again bounced back to prove their critics wrong.

The duo, who have reached the finals of the year’s first three Grand Slams, lost the Australian Open doubles final but won at Rolland Garros, did the country proud yesterday as they beat Dutchman Paul Haarhuis and Jared Palmer of the USA 6-7 (10-12), 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the finals.

The way to the final was not a tame affair as the pair battled through five setters in the quarterfinals and semifinals. However the Indian ace pair showed their remarkable strength by bouncing back yesterday from a set loss to win the championship.

The win here should sound a warning to their opponents at the next big one- the US Open- as the top form of the Indians can be judged from the fact that their latest title came on grass, certainly not their favourite surface.

After their win at the French Open, Leander had said, “we are not too confident about Wimbledon. That is one surface where power thrives and we don’t have the ammunition to blunt it. We should now concentrate on the US Open.’’

But with the win yesterday, the Indians have proved that they have the strength to blunt power at any surface, anywhere.

They have reached the pinnacle of success, achieving what could not be even achieved by Indian tennis’ two other great families — the Krishnans and Amritrajs.

The pair had to wage a long battle before their ‘Grand Slam’ success.

In 1998 they lost in the semifinals of the Australian Open, French Open and the US Open. Before their success at Rolland Garros this year, their closest brush with a Grand Slam title came at the Australian Open, where they narrowly lost to Patrick Rafter and Jonas Bjorkman in five gruelling sets.

But the way the Indians fought back into the game at Wimbledon, after being down by a set, speaks volumes about their immense power, co-ordination and confidence.

The No. 1 pair now aims to finish the year as top seeds. The Indians missed the feat last year, falling behind the Woodies-Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge- and also Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis due to a bone spur in Leander’s left heel at the World Championship.

The injury had forced the Indians to withdraw from the World Championship.

Title tally: (13 tour and two Grand Slams) 1999: Gold Flake Open, Chennai, French Open Wimbledon. 1998: Qatar Mobil Open, Doha Dubai Tennis Open, Dubai Gold Flake Open, Chennai, Campionati Internationazionali D’Italia-Tim Cup, Rome Heineken Open, Shanghai, Theme Open de Paris, (Paris). 1997: Gold Flake Open, (Chennai), Paegas Czech Open, (Prague) Du Maurier Open, (Montreal), Pilot Pen International, (New Haven), Beijing Open Heineken Open, (Singapore).

I couldn’t be happier now: Davenport

LONDON, July 4 (Reuters) — Lindsay Davenport acknowledged a transformation in her life today that has made her one of the most contented of Wimbledon champions.

The 23-year-old American beat Steffi Graf 6-4 7-5 in the women’s singles final, a match which Graf said afterwards, was her last ever at the championships.

While Graf contemplates retirement, Davenport is dreaming of greatness.

Three years ago, the Californian was overweight, lacking in confidence and her family life was in turmoil, with her parents going through a divorce.

However, after beating Graf to write her name into the record books — and into the membership lists of the All-England Club — the only problem facing Davenport was what to wear to the traditional Wimbledon champions ball tonight.

The final was not played as usual on last evening because of rain delays, and Davenport said: “I thought that, even if I won here, I would have time to find a dress today.

“But now I’ve got no dress and the ball is a few hours away. It’s going to be difficult to find something — I’ve asked my adviser on the WTA Tour to sort it out”.

Davenport, who broke her Grand Slam duck by winning the US Open last year, added: “Winning the US Open gave me a lot of confidence and now I feel like I deserve to be out there in these big matches.

“A few years ago, I wasn’t in great shape, and I would get overwhelmed very quickly in certain situations.

“After 25 years of marriage, my parents divorced in 1996 as well, and that was really difficult for my family.

“But I couldn’t be happier now. I’m very close to my mum, I’m rebuilding my relationship with my father and the family is very close.

“I’m glad, too, that I was able to defy the experts who said I couldn’t win anything on grass. I was a 15-1 shot to win here before the tournament started, and it feels incredible to prove them wrong”.

Davenport, who regained the world number one ranking with her success here, is a unique champion by her very normality.

Her age divides her between the “golden oldies” of Graf and Novotna and the teen brigade. And, by her own admission, she has nothing “in her closet” for the newspapers to exploit.

“I don’t do anything over-exciting, I have a normal relationship with my family, and I prefer it that way.

“The best way to get attention is to win matches and tournaments, and I’d much rather have any name in the papers for that rather than something else”.

A dream come true for Indian duo

LONDON, July 5 (Reuters) — Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes became the first Indians to win a senior Wimbledon title today when they made their dream come true by securing the men’s doubles.

The top seeds, who won the French Open doubles title last month, beat Dutchman Paul Haarhuis and Jared Palmer of the USA 6-7 (10-12) 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-4) on court one.

“We put more work into this tournament than the French”, said Bhupathi.

“We never thought we could win at Wimbledon, because we had never done well on grass before. I nearly booked my plane tickets home for the middle of the first week.

“But our last three matches were amazing. We came back from a set down in each one and built up a great momentum.

“Winning the title was our best performance yet. When the moment came, there were tears in my eyes, and I think Leander was about to cry as well.

“It was a dream, and one we never thought would come true”.

Haarhuis won the title last year at Wimbledon with compatriot Jacco Eltingh.

Bhupathi, the world-ranked number two in doubles, said he had been trying to call his mother at home in India, but had not managed to get through.

“She must be talking to everyone else first”, he said. “I think our achievements have captured the attention of people back home, although we’re lucky in that we are not expected to win.

“There is great pressure on our cricketers, but if we do well, people just appreciate it.

“The support, from Indians in this country, and from back home, has been great. When we have got into a crunch situation, we have used that support to help us come through.

“Hopefully, what we have done at the French and now at Wimbledon will do a hell of a lot for tennis in India. Television has been showing our matches, and perhaps that will have got some young people interested in the game”.

This year has been an overwhelming success for the pair.

They also reached the doubles final at the Australian Open, while Paes — who won the junior singles title at Wimbledon nine years ago — rose to become the best doubles player in the world, taking Bhupathi’s ranking from him.

The pair battled through five-set matches in the quarter and semifinals. Bhupathi will now take a break from their hectic schedule.

“I have torn some fibres in the lower abdomen on my left side, and I’ve been playing with the injury for the last three days. I’m going home for a rest”.

They will team up again to prepare for the U.S. Open in August”. We compliment such other really well”, said Bhupathi.

“Our confidence is so high at the moment. We have broken the barrier of winning our first Grand Slam, and we can do much together from here”.

Beckham, ‘Posh Spice’ tie the knot

DUBLIN, July 5 (AFP) — In a secret ceremony at a romantic Irish castle pin-up Manchester United midfielder David Beckham married Spice Girl Victoria Adams yesterday.

The golden couple exchanged vows at a lavish bash in the French-owned Luttrellstown Castle retreat for the rich on the outskirts of Dublin.

A single white dove was released as they married.

Only close family and friends attended the actual ceremony presided over by Church of Ireland Bishop of Cork Paul Colton.

The nuptials between the multi-millionaires Becham (24) and Adams (25) better known as “Posh Spice” are being hailed as the celebrity wedding of the year with no expense spared.

Dubbed the “people’s royal wedding” by the tabloid press exclusive media rights to the showbiz affair have been bought up by glossy magazine ok for a reported £ 1 million ($ 1.5 million).

The couple exchanged wedding rings within a tight ring of security around the heavily wooded 560 acres estate.

Crowds gathered at the entrance hoping to catch a glimpse of the 300 guests on their way into the medieval castle but many travelled in smoked glass limousines.

The guests included Sir Elton John, other members of the Spice Girls group, most of the Manchester United team and Sir Bobby Charlton.

Colombia beat Argentina

LUQUE, (Paraguay), July 5 (AFP) — Argentina striker Martin Palermo incredibly missed three penalties as Colombia stormed into the Copa America quarter-finals with a brilliant 3-0 victory here yesterday.

Paraguayan referee Ubaldo Aquino awarded five spot kicks and red carded two Argentinians, including coach Marcelo Bielsa, in a thrilling match in what has already proved a compelling tournament.

The result means Argentina will need to get a result in their last group C match with Uruguay, who earlier beat Ecuador, to be certain of a last eight spot although even third place in the “group of death” could be good enough.

Both teams started at breakneck speed with play switching from end to end and both were awarded penalties in the first 10 minutes play.

It were Argentina who won the first spot kick after four minutes when Palermo, voted the best player in South America, panicked Alexander Viveros into needlessly handling.

But Palermo, who scored two goals against Ecuador in his team’s opening match, blasted the ball against the bar.

Just five minutes later the boot was on the other foot when Argentina defender Nelson Vivas, who plays his club football with English premiership side Arsenal, was penalised for fouling Colombia’s impressive Arley Betancourt.

Colombia’s Ivan Cordoba netted, sending goalkeeper German Burgos the wrong way.

Argentina tried to hit back through Palermo’s team-mate at Boca Juniors Guillermo Barros Schelotto but he failed to connect properly with his shot.

But as the game drifted into first-half injury time Colombia were very unlucky not to double their lead.

A freekick from Rubiel Quintana deceived Burgos in the flight but the referee ruled the goal out.

Colombian players made their feelings known to the officials as they left the field at the interval.

But just one minute after the resumption Colombia were the beneficiaries of an even more controversial decision when Ayala was penalised for a seemingly innocuous challenge.

A third penalty was the result but Hamilton Ricard’s strike was well saved by Burgos, who looks set to join Spanish first division side Real Mallorca.

That prompted an impressive spell from Argentina with Inter Milan star Javier Zanetti becoming more prominent.

Colombia coach Javier Alvarez reacted by introducing 16-year-old Johnnier Montano — a late addition to the squad after injury ruled out Faustino Asprilla — to stiffen his midfield at the expense of the more creative Betancourt.

Again Argentina pressed and Cristian Gonzalez clipped the bar although in all honesty it was probably more of a shot than a cross.

But then Argentina’s task became all the more difficult when Zanetti was red carded for a foul on Quintana.

But amazingly Argentina were awarded their second penalty after 75 minutes with Viveros again penalised for handling. This time there was little he could do.

Creditably Palermo had the courage to take it again. Less creditably he blasted his second shot into orbit.

Angry Argentinian Boss Marcelo Bielsa was ordered from the dug-out by Aquino and less than a minute later Colombia made it 2-0.

A beautiful flick from Edwin Congo, with the help of a slight deflection, made it 2-0.

Then Montano made it three at the death with a superb individual effort, lobbing Burgos from 30 yards after a mazy run.

Amazingly in injury-time a third Argentinian penalty was awarded. Again Palermo volunteered. This time his shot was on target but could not beat Colombia keeper Miguel Calero.

Earlier two second-half goals from Juventus striker Marcelo Zalayeta had put Uruguay on course for a place in the quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory leaving Ecuador all but eliminated.

Zalayeta, who was loaned by the Italian giants to relegated Serie A side Empoli last season, showed just why he is considered the most exciting young talent in Uruguayan football.

The fallen giants of world football badly needed this win after losing their group C opener 1-0 to Colombia while Ecuador know that the grim reaper will almost certainly appear after their last match with Colombia.

It was the second half that saw all the significant action.

Tudor new hero in England

LONDON, July 5 (Reuters) — Not since the exploits of Ian Botham nearly two decades ago has an English crowd cheered and bowed in obeisance to a national cricket hero.

On Saturday at Edgbaston they did with unabated joy.

Chants of “T-u-d-o-r, T-u-d-o-r,” rang out around the ground as a 21-year-old fast bowler batted England to victory over New Zealand with an uninhibited display of punishing strokes.

In the space of less than four hours at the crease, Alex Tudor earned his place in the hearts of cricket supporters in a way that most in a career lifetime, however, successful, can never achieve.

It was a batting display that well deserved a century. But perhaps it may well stay in the memory more romantically in the long term for ending as 99 not out.

His commanding innings turned for England what might have been a difficult struggle into a runaway first Test win by seven wickets.

It was not just his score, but the manner of it which was so impressive. He had to run only 15 of those 99 runs, the remainder coming from 21 boundaries.

“I’ve always enjoyed batting,” Tudor said after the match. “When I was younger, I was an all-rounder but I lost it a bit after concentrating on my bowling.”

Dvorak sets new decathlon record

PRAGUE, July 5 (AFP) — The Czech Republic’s reigning world champion Tomas Dvorak set a new world decathlon record here on Sunday and then suggested he could break it again in next month’s world championships.

The 1996 Olympic bronze medallist posted a points total of 8,994, eclipsing the previous mark of 8,891 set by America’s reigning Olympic champion Dan O’Brien in 1992 in the French town of talence.

Despite suffocating heat Dvorak, 27, just failed to become the first man to pass the mythical figure of 9,000 points in front of his ecstatic home supporters, if his time in the closing 1500 m discipline had been 0.086 faster he would have reached that landmark.

Dvorak, who broke the record in front of just 2,000 people, said: “I now know I am capable of breaching the 9,000-point barrier. I really believe it. And why not do it at the Seville world championships when it would earn $ 100,000”.

He beat his own personal best by 157 points and his performance here included no less than five personal bests the 100m, long jump, shot put, discus and javelin.

Jeev finishes joint 29th
From Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, July 5 — Jeev Milkha Singh continued to struggle with windly conditions on the second successive day as he returned a two-over 73 card to finish tied for the 29th place in the Euro 1.4 million. Murphy’s Irish Open, which concluded at the par-71 Glens Druid golf course, 10 miles south of Dublin, on Sunday.

According to information reaching here, Jeev shot two bogies on either half of his journey and a solitary eagle on the 522-yard par-5 11th hole to aggregate one-under 283 for the tournament.

It was a crushing blow for the Indian ace, who was leading the tournament at one stage after 31 holes. It also jeopardised his chances of getting a direct entry into the British Open starting at Carnoutsie from July 15. Top five in the order of merit this season, after all the exemptions, get direct invitation to play the major championship. Jeev dropped to 27th in the Volvo European PGA tour order of merit after the tournament.

His last chance of getting a direct entry comes this week in the Standard Life Loch Lomond Tournament, which begins on Thursday.

The tournament was won by Spanish sensation Sergio Garcia, nicknamed ‘El nino’ for his devastating play. Garcia returned a final round card of seven-under 64 to aggregate 16-under 268 for 72 holes, three strokes better than Argentina’s Angel Cabrera. Garcia became the fourth youngest player in European tour history to win a title. This was just his sixth tournament after turning professional following the successful Augusta Masters tournament. Australia’s Jarrod Moseley was third at 11-under 273.

Colin Montgomerie of Scotland, the world No 6, finished tied for the seventh place along with world No 9 Lee Westwood of England. Monty moved back to the top of the order of merit with the finish after relinquishing the position for one week to South African Retief Goosen.

Scores (after 72 holes):1 268 — Sergio Garcia (Esp) 69+68+67+64, 2 272 — Angel Cabrera (Arg) 70+66+66+69, 3 273 — Jarrod Moseley (Aus) 66+69+69+69, T-4 276 — Eamonn Darcy (Ire) 68+67+71+70, Miguel Angel Martin (Esp) 71+71+72+62, Thomas Bjorn (Den) 70+66+71+69, T-29 283 — Jeev Milkha Singh (Ind) 66+69+75+73.

USA, China in final

WASHINGTON, July 5 (DPA) — China crushed Norway 5-0 in Foxborough Massachusetts, a victory that means they will be pitted against the USA — a repeat performance of the 1996 Olympic gold medal game — at the women’s World Cup finals on July 10.

Chinese goalkeeper Gao Hong had a slow, hot night in Massachusetts, as most of the action focussed on Norwegian goalie Bente Nordby and the temperature hovered around 31 degrees celsius as the match got underway. It wasn’t until the 63rd minute of play that Norway even got a chance at the Chinese goal when Solveig Gulbrandsen made an attempt.

Meanwhile, China got its first goal only three minutes into play when Sun Wen scored, and followed that goal 11 minutes later with another, scored by Liu Ailing.

Sun and Liu went on to score the third and fifth goal, respectively, while Fan Yunjie scored the fourth goal in the 6th minute of play before an audience of nearly 29,000 fans.

Earlier, the US women shut out Brazil 2-0 in Palo Alto, winning themselves the other slot in the July 10 final in Pasadena, California.

The US women scored the first goal in the fifth minute of the game as Julie Foudy crossed the ball past Brazilian goalie Maravilha, who reached for it but saw it bounce off her hands. Cindy Parlow then headed the ball into the net.

The second goal was the result of a penalty kick given to the USA after Brazil’s Elane pulled US favourite Mia Hamm down in the box when Hamm had a direct line to the goal.

2-match suspension for Salas

ASUNCION, July 5 (Reuters) — Chile striker Marcelo Salas was given a two-match Copa America suspension yesterday after being sent off for diving in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Venezuela.

The Organisers also said that Brazilian player Rivaldo, sent off for a violent tackle in the 2-1 win over Mexico, had been given a one-match ban along with midfielder Emerson Ferreira, who picked up his second yellow card in the same match.

Salas’ punishment appeared harsh while Rivaldo seemed to get off lightly.

Salas received his marching orders after twice being shown the yellow card for diving, although replays suggested that in the first case he had been genuinely fouled while on the second occasion he had his hair pulled by a Venezuelan defender.
