China's no to move on Tibet Day
BEIJING, July 8 (PTI) — China today demanded that the US Government stick to its commitment that Tibet was a part of China and reject a proposal in the House of Representatives to designate July 10 as World Tibet Day. "Tibet is an inalienable part of Chinese territory and Tibetan affairs are the internal affairs of China and no foreign country has the right to interfere in them," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue told reporters here.

US Embassy bombed
KIEV, July 8 (DPA) — The United States Embassy in the former Soviet Republic of Ukraine has had two firebombs thrown at it, a U.S. Information Service (USIS) spokesman today said in Kiev. Two fire bombs were thrown at the US Embassy in Kiev around 1 a.m. yesterday, but only caused ‘‘insignificant damage’’. Nobody claimed responsibility for the attack.

8 burnt to death
CALCUTTA, July 8 (PTI) — Eight persons were burnt to death and one injured in a fire at a bulb factory at Rajarhat in North 24 Parganas district today, the police said. The fire broke out when a gas cylinder burst in a room on the third floor of the Lampco Electrical Works factory around 9.30 a.m., the police said adding the dead and the injured were all employees of the factory.

Militant killed
GUWAHATI, July 8 (PTI) — A hardcore militant was killed in an encounter with the police in the Kahilipara area of the city, the police said today. Lakheswar Rabha, chairman of the Rabha National Security Force, and his accomplices were on a scooter and a motor cycle, respectively, when a police patrol asked them to stop. Rabha opened fire at the police and was seriously injured.

Ceasefire deal
LUSAKA, July 8 (Reuters) — Zambian President Frederick Chiluba today announced that African heads of state would converge on Lusaka on Saturday to sign a ceasefire deal to end the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

23 die in landslides
DUSHANBE, July 8 (AP) — Two landslides struck Tajikistan overnight, killing at least 23 persons as walls of mud and earth demolished homes and swept away roads, emergency officials said. The first landslide swept through the northern region of Leninabadsky, destroying 150 homes and severely damaging 200 others, a spokesman with Tajikistan's Emergency Situations Ministry said.

7 dacoits killed
AGRA, July 8 (PTI) — Seven dacoits, including their leader Chob Singh, were killed in a gunfight with the police in the ravines near Kiravli village, about 23 km from here, last night, the police said today. On a tip-off that the dacoits were about to strike, a strong police contingent led by Albel Singh, DSP, Fatehabad, encircled the dacoits in the ravines, SSP, S K Singh said.

3 Naxals shot
HYDERABAD, July 8 (UNI) — Three naxalites of the Janasakthi group, including a woman, were killed in an encounter with the police, while naxals set ablaze a record room of a railway station in Nizamabad and Karimnagar districts of Andhra Pradesh today. The police here said they came across a four-member militant group of Padmimadyu Vagu near Chinnapalli village in Nizamabad district and asked them to surrender. But, the naxalites opened fire at them, forcing them to return the fire, in which three extremists were killed. The other escaped.

Baig’s resignation
BANGALORE, July 8 (PTI) — The resignation tendered by former Karnataka Minister R. Roshan Baig from his assembly membership was accepted today. Assembly Deputy Speaker Chandrashekhar Reddy Deshmukh announced the resignation of Baig, who represented Shivajinagar constituency, in the house.

Support for Dilip
NEW DELHI, July 8 (UNI) — The Federation of Legislators of India, which is patronised by all former prime ministers, today deplored the demonstration by Shiv Sainiks against thespian Dilip Kumar, asking him to return the highest civilian award of Pakistan in the wake of the Kargil crisis. In a statement, the federation condemned the act of violence outside Dilip Kumar's residence, saying the film star is a "noble son of India", whose patriotism and loyalty cannot be doubted.

Pak bars pilgrims from Delhi visit
ISLAMABAD, July 8 (PTI) — Pakistan has cancelled the visit of pilgrims to the shrine of Hazrat Khwaja Nizamuddin in Delhi later this month in view of the prevailing tension over the Kargil crisis. The Religious Affairs Ministry said, in a press note, that because of the prevailing tension "created by India" it would not be possible for the Pakistani pilgrims to visit the shrine of Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi for the annual urs to be held from July 26 to August 2.

PM to visit Kulu
NEW DELHI, July 8 (TNS) — The Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, would visit Himachal Pradesh on July 14, to lay the foundation stone for the 2051 MW Parbati hydro-electric project in the state. Meanwhile, the Himachal Chief Minister, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal visited the Base hospital in the Delhi cantonment and enquired about the health of soldiers injured in the Kargil conflict. He presented gifts and fruit juice packs to the injured soldiers on behalf of the people of Himachal Pradesh.
