CHANDIGARH, July 10 — The police has registered a case against a non-banking forestry company for duping a city resident to the tune of Rs 3.57 lakh. According to police sources, Mr Uma Shanker of Sector 31 lodged a complaint that he had invested money in Surbhi Forest India, Mani majra, sometime back.

Now that the time of the maturity of his investment had come, the company was refusing to honour the commitment. A case has been registered against Usha Kiran Chaturvedi, the director of the company, and further investigations are in progress.

Money snatched: The police has arrested N. Bhatia of Sector 7 and Nishi Kant Sharma of SAS Nagar for snatching Rs 500 from Surendra Kumar, an STD operator in Sector 29, and fleeing on their scooter. The duo reportedly asked for change for a Rs 500 note and snatched the money from the hands of the complainant.

Pickpocket nabbed: The police has arrested Jatinder Kumar of Dhanas for picking the pocket of Mr Mohan Singh of Ambala at the PGI bus stop. A sum of Rs 300 was recovered from his possession. A case has been registered.

Man killed: An unidentified man died after being hit by a Tata 407 truck near Dhillon theatre in Mani majra on Saturday. He was declared brought dead at the PGI, Chandigarh. He was crossing a road when he was hit by the truck.

One injured: Meena of Kishangarh was injured after allegedly falling from the roof of her house. She has been admitted to the PGI.

Two arrested: The police has arrested Jaswant Lal of Kishangarh village and Jayanti of Madrasi colony for roaming under suspicious circumstances. A case under Section 41(2)\109 of the CrPC has been registered.

Black-marketeer held: The police has arrested Brij Kishore from Bihar for selling tickets in black outside a cinema hall.

Cyclist injured: A cyclist, Khurshid Ahmad, was knocked down by a car near the Sector 45\46 roundabout. He has been admitted to GMCH in Sector 32. Further investigations are on.

Vehicle stolen: Mr Rajiv Goyal of Sector 18-C has lodged a complaint with the police alleging that his driver Subash, of Burail village, has decamped with his Tata Sumo along with Rs 2.50 lakh in cash. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.

KHARAR

One killed: One person was killed in a road accident when the cycle he was riding was hit by a scooter near Majatatri village last night.

According to the police, Surjit Singh, an employee of the local Panipat Woollen Mills, was killed when he was hit by a scooter driven by Bahadur Singh, a resident of a village falling in Fatehgarh Sahib district. The accused fled the scene after the accident. The scooter was impounded by the local police, which have registered a case under Sections 279 and 304 of the IPC.

PANCHKULA

Two killed: At least two persons were killed and nine persons were seriously injured when a truck rammed into the gate of Kali Mai Mandir at Kalka in the wee hours of this morning. The speeding truck was coming from Kalka when the mishap took place.

The driver of the truck, Vikram Jit, and Devinder died and Rajju, who was in the truck, was injured. The others injured were present in the temple complex. The Kalka police has registered a case under Sections 279, 337, 338 and 304-A of the IPC.

Liquor seized: The Pinjore Police has arrested Jai Singh of Johluwal Tanda for allegedly carrying five bottles of IMFL. He has been booked under the Excise Act.Back

Peas become cheaper

CHANDIGARH, July 10 — Barring peas, the prices of most of the commonly used vegetables have witnessed an increase during the past three days.

During a survey of the market today, it was found that a kg of cauliflower, priced at Rs 16-18 three days ago, could be purchased at Rs 24. Its wholesale price increased from Rs 60 to Rs 100 per 5 kg. Similarly, the price of cabbage increased from Rs 10 to Rs 12 a kg in retail and Rs 30 to Rs 40 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.

The price of cucumber also registered an increase as a kg of the vegetable priced at Rs 10 three days back was available at Rs 16. Its wholesale price went up from Rs 40 to Rs 70 per 5 kg. Similarly, gourd became costly as its price increased in the retail market from Rs 10 to Rs 15 a kg and in the wholesale market from Rs 40 to Rs 60 per 5 kg.

On the other hand, peas have become cheaper with a fall in their from Rs 40 to Rs 30 a kg. The wholesale price of the vegetable came down from Rs 175 to Rs 125 per 5 kg. Beans became cheaper as their price came down from Rs 24 to Rs 20 a kg in retail and Rs 100 to Rs 80 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.

Traders attributed the fall in the prices of the vegetables to an increased arrival in the local market from different parts of Himachal Pradesh. On the other hand, the prices of cauliflower, cabbage and cuccumber increased due to their lesser arrival from the hill state.

The price of brinjal increased from Rs 12 to Rs 16 a kg in retail and Rs 45 to Rs 60 per 5 kg in the wholesale market. A kg of capsicum, earlier priced at Rs 16, was available at Rs 20.

The wholesale price of the same went up from Rs 60 to Rs 80 per 5 kg. The same was the case with bittergourd, as its price increased from Rs 16 to Rs 20 in retail and Rs 60 to Rs 80 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.

Lady's finger witnessed a hike in its price, as a kg of the vegetable, priced at Rs 10, was available in the market at Rs 15 while in the wholesale market the price went up from Rs 40 to Rs 60 per 5 kg.

There was no change in the prices of some of vegetables. A kg of ''arbi'' was still priced at Rs 16, while the same quantity of lemon could be purchased for Rs 20. The prices of tomato, potato and onion were stable at Rs 10, Rs 5 and Rs 10 a kg, respectively.Back



 


Talwar is President of CFA

CHANDIGARH, July 10 — Mr Ravinder Talwar and Mr Rakesh Bakshi were unanimously elected President and Secretary, respectively, of the Chandigarh Football Association, in a special annual general meeting of the body held at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here today. Mr A.S. Bains, outgoing President of the body, did not attend today's meeting.

The meeting was convened on request of majority of the members of the association. The All-India Football Federation (AIFF) had deputed Mr Syed Nazar Ali as an observer of the federation. Representatives of 34 out of a total of 41 affiliated units of the CFA took part in today's meeting.

Elections in today's meeting were held under the supervision of Mr Ali. The house was declared in order by Mr Ali and then Mr Jagbir Singh proposed the name of Mr Talwar as President of the body which was seconded by Mr Harbans Lal. It was unanimously approved by the house. Thereafter, Mr Surinder Kumar proposed the name of Mr Rakesh Bakshi for the crucial post of the Secretary, seconded by Mr Vimal Chander, which the house approved unanimously. Mr C.P. Malik was elected Treasurer of the association by the house.

Mr Talwar was authorised by the house to nominate its team for the next term in consultation with the secretary and the treasurer.

The following were made the office-bearers: Senior Vice-Presidents — Mr D.S. Bedi, Mr Kanwar Harbans Lal, Brother C.D. Abreu and Mr C.D. Sehgal.

Vice-Presidents — Mr Pala Ram, Mr Satbir Singh, Mr Jagbir, Mr Jatinder, Mr Suresh Jaswal and Mr Jodh Singh.

Joint Secretaries — Mr Kanwar Vinod, Mr Arun Kumar, Mr Surinder Kumar, Mr Kuldeep Rana, Mr Sukhwinder Singh.

Executive Committee — Mr Maha Singh, Mr Vimal Chander, Mr Paramjeet Singh, Mr Baljinder singh, Mr Yadvinder Singh, Mr Prakash, Mr Amrik Singh, Mr Dinesh Ralwar, Mr Raj Kumar and Mr B.L. Ganguly. Mr Dinesh Sharma was appointed the state coach.

Earlier, besides passing the accounts of the previous year, the CFA's achievements were appreciated by the house.

City chess tourney

Naveen Jain continued with his winning spree on the penultimate day of the 10th Chandigarh Chess Championship being played here at the Sector 42 sports complex. After six rounds, Naveen remained the sole leader with six points followed by Sanjeev Biswas and Ajay Jaswal, having five points each. Abhinandan Vohra and Kanwar Sandeep Singh too had four-and-a-half points each.

Cricket tourney

The Hansraj Academy, Panchkula, won the first match on the opening day of the first District Panchkula Cricket Tournament held at Sector 5, Panchkula. They beat the Tiger Academy by 186 runs.

Brief scores: Hansraj academy — 273 runs for two wickets in 25 overs (Bhageshwar Bisht 82 n.o., Saurav 43, Yash Chander 43 n.o., Gaurav Chopra 25). Tiger XI — 87 all out in 17.5 overs (Puneet 14, Manoj 11).

Volleyball final

Defending champions north-west zone will take on the Rapid Action Force team in the final of the Inter-Sector CRPF Volleyball Championship being played here at the police lines, Sector 26, here today. In the first semi-final, they ousted the central zone team, 25-15, 25-14, 28-26. In the second semi-final of the day, the Rapid Action Force defeated the southern sector, 25-14, 25-20, 25-18. The final will be played on Monday.

Youngsters Club win

The Youngsters Club beat the Panther Club by four wickets in the first Bathany Cup Cricket Tournament played at the CRPF ground today.

Brief scores: Panther CC — 116 all out (Tilak Raj 33, Avtar Singh 19, Deepak 3 for 19).
