Hooda demands white
paper on power CHANDIGARH, July 10 Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, President, Haryana Pradesh Congress (I) Committee, has expressed concern about the hardships being faced by the people of the State in all sectors, including domestic, agricultural and industrial, due to erratic power supply. The Haryana PCC chief said the Chief Minister had made loud claims to ensure 24-hour uninterrupted supply of electricity in the state from June 30. However, reports appearing in newspapers daily, and on the basis of information reaching the Haryana PCC headquarters, the power supply position had not improved and people were facing the same old difficulties, forcing them to resort to road-blocks, gherao of sub-stations and officials of the department. Mr Hooda said that complaints of undeclared long cuts in the supply of power had become an order of the day, contrary to the promise of round-the-clock supply. The state government was answerable to the people and should bring out a white paper on the present-day status of the generation and transmission of electricity. Mr Hooda also deplored the tendency of people to take the law into their own hands in such matters. He condemned the killing of an official of HVPN and asked the people of the state to register their protests in a peaceful manner. The Congress leader
criticised the government for holding the staff concerned
responsible for non-fulfilment of the much-touted promise
by Mr Bansi Lal. He urged the government to take
immediate steps for restoring power supply to all
sectors. |
Spurious medicine racket AMBALA: The sale and manufacture of spurious and substandard medicine has increased in Haryana during the past several years. The Haryana Pharmaceutical Association has also taken notice of it. According to the sources, this year itself the Drug Control Department cancelled the licences of about one dozen manufacturers in the state. Some of them are based at Jhajjar and Faridabad. Some pharmaceutical factories have also been sealed. Last month the department recovered substandard Becosules capsules in huge quantity from a city on Haryana adjoining Delhi. In Ambala also the Baralagan, a banned tablet, was seized from a dealer in bulk. Recently the drug authorities of Jhajjar district sealed a drug factory which was allegedly manufacturing and packing medicines illegally. Last month the UP police nabbed a doctor for selling fake medicines of popular brands at cheaper rate. During interrogation the police found that the medicines were supplied by a factory of Faridabad. Interestingly the manufacturers wrapped the medicines in such a way that it looked like the original. The sources disclosed that there are about 325 licensed pharmaceutical factories in Haryana. Most of them are situated at Ambala, Panchkula, Faridabad, Jhajjar, Sonepat and Gurgaon. Some of the factories which manufacture substandard medicines, supply the stuff mostly to UP and Delhi. The margin of profit on these medicines is very high, so some of the dealers prefer to sell them. There are some manufacturers in the state who do not have their factory or laboratory, but they are selling their products. According to a genuine manufacturer these manufacturers are quite tactful and by hook or crook they manage the sale of their products. Mr T.C. Kansal, General
Secretary, Haryana Pharmaceutical Association, also
admitted that there were some black sheep in their
profession who were bringing a bad name to the industry.
He said on the association level they would try their
best that this illegal incident should not repeat. Mr
Kansal disclosed that after the arrival of multinational
companies in the pharmaceutical field, the small-scale
factories were facing problems. About 100 factories of
such scale had already been closed. |
KU, Zee Education plan
academy KURUKSHETRA, July 10 In a major development Kurukshetra University and Zee Education have planned to set up a career academy on the university campus and at some colleges affiliated to it to enable students to acquire professional skills in computers, E-commerce and Internet along with other subjects. This follows the decision of Zee Education (ZED) authorities to collaborate with the university to provide job-oriented education through their network. Dr M.L. Ranga, Vice-Chancellor of the university told TNS that in the first phase the collaboration would address to the needs of the country for manpower and in Internet as well as E-commerce areas. It was a strategic partnership and it would enable students all over the country to acquire qualifications in Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) and provide exposure in computers and Internet technologies. Ms Uma Ganesh, Chief Executive Officer, Zee Education, said the collaboration programme would adopt unique state-of-the-art education delivery methods which included on-line learning facility, video support and projects. It would try to remove the gap between supply and demand of seats in regular colleges and lead to employment opportunities in the booming software sector. Dr Ranga said another major highlight of the collaboration was the agreement reached for offering India's first on-line M.Sc. programme in software. Mr L.C. Gupta, Principal Secretary to the Vice-Chancellor and Director Distance Education, stated that admissions for the on-line M.Sc. programme would commence in 2000. He maintained that Kurukshetra University would provide the content for the programme and Zee Education Internet development team would be involved in the design and delivery of the courses which would be made available to students all over the world. Mr Gupta maintained that
the collaboration had been reached keeping in view the
acute shortage of seats in major universities of the
country. Citing an instance, he maintained that at Delhi
University against 38,000 seats in regular courses, over
75,000 students had cleared class XII examinations this
year. And it would not be possible for the university and
other neighbouring universities to provide seats to all
students. The academy would enable students to acquire
certificate course in computer applications, postgraduate
diploma in computers, applications, business
administration and commerce etc. |

Power crisis: residents'
protest AMBALA, July 10 Inadequate and erratic power supply has made living of residents difficult at Ambala and its surrounding areas. They are getting hardly six to 10 hours power supply. A few days ago the police had to resort to lathicharge on residents of Ambala Cantt to restore traffic on the Ambala-Jagadhri road. The residents had put up blockades on the road to mark their protest against power crisis. Workers of the Indian National Lok Dal yesterday blocked the Ambala-Hisar road for two hours near Matheri village. They were not getting electricity even for two hours. Since the paddy plantation period was at its peak the erratic electricity supply was hampering the transplantation work. Meanwhile, Mr N.C. Jain, Vice-President, Haryana Chamber of Commerce and Industry and some other industrial associations have sent telegrams to the HVPN Chairman. They have complained about frequent breakdowns, low voltage, and unscheduled power cuts for the past one month. Mr Jain said export orders were being cancelled due to low production. HISAR: The Bharatiya Yuva Janata Morcha has demanded a white paper on the power situation in the state. In a statement here on Friday, the senior Vice-President of the morcha, Mr Rakesh Sethi, charged the Chief Minister of "leaving thousands of HVPN employees at the mercy of the mob". Mr Sethi pointed out that only recently, one HVPN official Prahlad Singh had been killed by an angry mob. He blamed the Chief Minister for the murder. He said it was the result of the "irresponsible statements of the Chief Minister" that people should catch hold of the power employees if they did not get power. He said the Chief
Minister should admit the reality that round the clock
power cannot be provided in the state at this stage. |

Cong workers resent bailing
out HVP FARIDABAD, July 10 Resentment prevails among the Congress workers against the party leadership for bailing out the Bansi Lal government during the voting on the no-confidence motion in the state Assembly following withdrawal of the BJP support. Party workers felt that Mr Bansi Lal had taken the Congress for a ride after the state leaders persuaded the high command to vote for the confidence motion. They also accused some senior leaders of misguiding Mrs Sonia Gandhi. They said if no urgent steps were taken to press Mr Bansi Lal to dissolve the Assembly to pave the way for holding mid-term elections, Mrs Gandhi's political wisdom would also be questioned. The party sources said, on condition of anonymity, the support to the confidence motion was a misadventure. The whole situation was mishandled by some leaders. They want that Mr Bansi
Lal should not be given any more time in taking a final
decision to step down, merge his party with the Congress
and recommend dissolution of the state assembly. |
Delay in rains worries farmers FATEHABAD, July 10 A delay in the arrival of monsoon in this area is causing worry to farmers and power board officials alike. It may be recalled that the meteorological department had predicted that the monsoon would arrive in Delhi and surrounding states by the June-end. But till now there is no signs of rains in this area which is causing worry to the farmers. A survey of the fields in the district revealed that cotton and bajra crops were in fairly good condition this time. The paddy crops in the water-logging prone area were also in a fine condition. But further delay in the arrival of monsoon may affect the crops. The farmers who depended on tubewells for irrigation, were facing problems. Regular power failures made their task difficult. As the transplantation of paddy was in progress these days, a lot of water was required. In the absence of rains the farmers had to depend on tubewells and canal waters. But both these two modes were not sufficient to complete the requirement of the farmers. In the canal irrigated areas, the sowing itself was delayed due to a breach in the Bhakra main canal last month. Though the delay in the
arrival had not made much of impact on the crops as yet,
but the farmers feared that if the monsoon failed to
arrive by the next week they might have to suffer heavy
losses as the crops might start withering away for the
want of sufficient water. |
