Seminar held:
The Kesh Sambhal Sanstha on Friday organised an all-religion seminar on the concept of spirituality and its importance in human life. The Commissioner, Income Tax, Mr S.J.S. Pall, who inaugurated the seminar, emphasised the importance of spirituality.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Patwaris dismissed:
The district administration has dismissed 11 patwaris from service, including its state President, Mr Gurmail Singh, under Article 311(2) B of the Constitution. According to Mr V.K.Janjua, Deputy Commissioner, these patwaris were already under suspension.

LUDHIANA
Seminar:
A seminar on commercial dairy farming was organised by the American Soyabean Association, Vetcare Ltd and Procall Ltd in association with Bank of India. About 200 dairy farmers from all over the state participated in the seminar conducted by eminent dairy experts. Mr S.N. Sood, Zonal Manager of the Bank, inaugurated the seminar and apprised the participants about the various loan schemes launched for dairy development.

NANGAL
Training camp:
A three-day 'gurmat training camp' being organised by the Sikh Student Federation (Mehta) was inaugurated by the Jathedar of Akal Takht, Gaini Puran Singh, here on Friday. The camp is being held at Gurdwara Bhabour Sahib till July 11. The Jathedar stressed the need to popularise the Sikh philosophy among the masses.

NAWANSHAHR
Sangat darshan:
The district administration, with a view to redressing the grievances of the people on the spot, organised a sangat darshan programme at Garcha village, about 12 km from here, on Friday. The Deputy Commissioner, Dr Roshan Sunkaria, the SSP, Mr Surinder Singh Sodhi, along with the officials of different departments, heard the problems of the people. Most of the problems related to bad roads, erratic power supply and non-release of pension. The Deputy Commissioner said a sum of Rs 2 crore was being spent on improving the conditions of the roads.

Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Rotaract Club (Central), Patiala: President — Mr Lovleen Saini; Vice-President — Mr Sanjay Jain; Secretary — Mr Sukhwinderjit Bham; and Treasurer — Mr Balbir Singh Zorra.

Free education: The Anand Marga Pracharka Sangh said on Friday that they would arrange free education for the children of the deceased and disabled Indian soldiers. According to a press note, 20 members of the sangh have enrolled themselves in military hospitals to meet any requirement of blood.

Bypass road: In order to ease the traffic pressure in Samana township a bypass road will be constructed shortly. Announcing this at a function organised in the Aggarwal dharamshala here on Friday, Finance Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh also announced a tax rebate for shops situated in the premises of the dharamshala.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Lions Club, Patiala Sheesh Mahal: President — Mr Parveen Sharma; Vice-President — Mr Veena Sharma; Secretary — Mr Ashok Kumar; and Treasurer — Mr Vimal Kumar.

PHAGWARA
Fine collected:
A fine of Rs 72,559 was collected from the Hadiabad area for unauthorised use of load condensers and illegal motors, according to a press note issued by Mr Ajit Singh, Xen, PSEB, Phagwara division, on Friday.

Demonstration:
Residents of the local Gokalpur mohalla on Friday demonstrated in front of the local Municipal Council office against poor civic amenities. Baba Partap M.Singh, Municipal Councillor, led the demonstrators. A large number of women too participated.

Case registered: The police has registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC against a local resident Gurdev Raj for allegedly killing his mother-in-law Bhushan Lata (50). The police said the case was registered on a complaint of Rajni Bala, the daughter of the deceased.top

Foreign students: A six-member delegation of foreign students representing 22 countries, led by Mr Lazarus I. Okoroji, Vice-President of the African Students Association, met Mr K.A.P. Sinha, Director Public Instruction (Colleges), on Saturday regarding their demands.

Workshop concludes: A ten-day workshop on 'Art and Craft and Personality Development' for the children of Bal Niketan and the inmates of Mother Teresa's missionaries of Charity concluded at Dev Samaj College of Education on Saturday. The Director Public Instruction (Colleges), Mr K.A.P. Sinha, was the chief guest.

KHARAR
Protests:
Students of DAV High School, Kurali, and students of Chakwal Senior Secondary School, Kurali, marched in procession on Friday and Saturday, respectively, protesting against the Pakistan Government for its role in the Kargil sector. The students and staff of both schools decided to donate Rs 10 each and one day's salary, respectively, towards the welfare of the soldiers fighting in Kargil.

Donated: The staff of Panipat Woollen Mills, Kharar, has donated Rs 75,000 towards the National Defence Fund for the welfare of the troops fighting in Kargil and their families. This was stated in a press note issued on Saturday.top



Haryana briefs
BHIWANI
Power generation:
The Haryana Government has spent Rs 5,000 crore during the past three years on increasing power generation and other power development activities in the state. This was stated by Mr Surender Singh a former MP, after laying the foundation stone of a 132 KV sub station at Loharu on Friday. The sub-station will be constructed by the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore.

Bus stand: Mr Sombir Singh, MLA, from Loharu, laid the foundation stone of a bus-stand at Behal village. He said the new bus-stand would be provided with every facility. The government, he added, was committed to providing every town and city in the state with bus-stands having all facilities for the commuters.

Race: The District Sports and Youth Welfare Department, in association with the Health Department, will organise a race on the occasion of the World Population Day on July 11. Minister of State for Health Bijender Kadyan will flag off the race. The participants will carry banners about the effects of growing population.

SHAHABAD
Installed:
A new team of the local Rotary Club, under the presidentship of Mr Mahesh Goel, was installed at a function here on Wednesday by the District Governor of the club, Mr Arun Sharma. He also installed Ms Geeta Goel and Mr Manoj Makkar as presidents of the Inner Wheel Club and the Rotract Club, respectively.

SIRSA
Sentenced:
Mr A.K. Vimal, the local Additional District and Sessions Judge, sentenced Ram Karan Bania to 10 years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh under the NDPS Act on Thursday. According to the prosecution, the accused was arrested by the Nathusari Chopta police near Chopta village in the district on December 18, 1992. During search, 5 kg of opium was recovered from his possession.

Criminal case: A criminal case under Sections 420, 468 and 471 of the IPC on the charge of cheating was registered against Ladhu Ram, Om Parkash and Prem Chand, sons of Mr Ram Rakh of Chakkan village in the district, at the city police station here on Thursday. The case was lodged on the complaint of Mr Ishwar Dutt, Judicial Magistrate (Ist Class), in which it had been alleged that to misguide the court, all the three accused filed false affidavits in a case. All the alleged accused were reportedly absconding.

Stolen: A domestic servant is reported to be missing with jewellery worth Rs 50,000 from the house of a cloth merchant in the local Suratgarhia bazar. According to sources, the family of the cloth merchant had engaged a woman from Bihar some time back as a maid. She confessed to having stolen things from the home. The matter was reported to the police.

SONEPAT
Procession:
A large number of students of local DAV Multipurpose School took out a procession on Friday in protest against the intrusion by the Pakistan-backed infiltrators in the Kargil, Dras and the Batalik sectors of Jammu and Kashmir. Carrying an effigy of the Pakistan Prime Minister, Mr Nawaz Sharif, and raising anti-Pakistan slogans, they passed through the main bazars of the city and burnt Mr Sharif's effigy.

Arrested: With the arrest of one person, the Kharkhauda police on Thursday claimed to have solved a looting incident which occurred on October 12 last year near Sisana village on the Sonepat-Rohtak road. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr K. Selvraj, told reporters here on Friday that the arrested person had been identified as Suresh of Dulehra village in Jhajjar district of Haryana. The police, he said, also arrested another person Rajinder, alias Boni, a resident of the Dharampura area of Nazafgarh (Delhi) on the charge of purchasing a stolen Tata Sumo for Rs 30,000.

Vyas Pooja: Shri Gita Ramayan Prachar Samiti here is holding its three-day annual Vyas Pooja Mahotsava commencing from July 16 on the premises of Shri Radha Krishan Mandir, Nandwani Nagar, in the city. Swami Divyanand Bhikhshu, a well-known saint of Hardwar, will perform the pooja.

Assault: Shops in the Ram Bazar area here remained closed on Thursday evening and Friday in protest against the alleged beating up of a goldsmith and assault on some other shopkeepers by some youths, said to be eve-teasers.top

MANALI
Protest:
The Press Club of Kulu has expressed discontent over the mild action taken against Mr Mahesh Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police, who was involved in beating up a local journalist Gopal Sharma. At a meeting convened here on Friday and presided over by Mr Chhavinder Thakur, President of the club, a resolution was passed unanimously seeking immediate suspension of the ASI and the policeman involved in beating up and misbehaving with the reporter. The members said recalling of the ASI to the police lines was not sufficient punishment.

NURPUR
Traffic blocked:
Residents of Dann village in Jawali subdivision blocked traffic at Kehrian chowk on Friday in protest against the mysterious death of a minor girl Savita (9) whose body was found in a well near Balai village on Thursday.

PALAMPUR
Raped:
Sarita Devi, a minor Dalit girl was allegedly gang raped by five youths near Rakkar village on Thursday. According to the police, Sarita was waiting for a bus when five youths forcibly took her away to the fields and raped her. A case has been registered.
