GURDASPUR
Literacy programme:
A literacy programme launched in this district more than a year ago has hardly made any headway. According to official sources, block-level coordinators and assistant coordinators are employed to launch the campaign but the work is being done on papers only. No adult education centres are functional at present. As many as 1.5 lakh adults have been identified for imparting education in this regard.

Ban: Mr S.K. Sandhu, District Magistrate, has imposed a ban on the digging on the digging of earth for manufacturing kutcha bricks by brick-kilns along the Chakki river, beyond Chakki bridge and up to the limits of this district. In another order, he banned all type of movements from inter national border to border security fencing from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. This order shall not be applicable on the G.T. Road, running from the border barrier to Gurdaspur. However, armed personnel were exempted from this order. The orders will remain in force till July 23.

HOSHIARPUR
Two held
: The police has arrested Balkaran Singh, alias Gabar Singh, and Ranjit Singh, alias Kali, residents of Bhulpur village Tanda, and recovered a revolver, five cartridges and a motor cycle from them. The police has already arrested three members of this gang, according to a press note issued by Mr R.P. Mittal, SSP, on Sunday.

MALERKOTLA
Opium seized:
The Dhuri police has arrested Mohammad Hanif, a resident of ward no 14, and seized 5 kg opium from his possession. According to Mr Ranbir Singh, DSP, the police traced as many as seven cases of liquor smuggling during the past 10 days and recovered 126 bottles of liquor.

Dental camp: As many as 400 patients were examined in a free dental check-up camp organised by the Youth Services Sports Club at Kaheru village, 20 km from here, on Saturday. Dr Mohammad Sabir, CMO, examined the patients.

Lok adalat: As many as 14 of the 33 cases were solved in a Lok Adalat held under the chairmanship of Mr B. S. Sandhu, Additional Civil Judge, (Senior Division), Dhuri, on Saturday. Three cases relating to matrimonial disputes were also settled.

PHAGWARA
Chain snatched
: Raju was attacked and injured by three miscreants who snatched his gold chain at local Thathiaran Mohalla on Sunday, the police said. Raju has been hospitalised.

ROPAR
BJP leader dead
: The President of the Ropar block of the BJP, Mr Om Parkash Jain (76), died of heart attack here. He was cremated on Saturday at the local cremation ground. Mr Madan Mohan Mittal, Punjab Food and Civil Supply Minister, and Mr Kamal Chaudhary, a member of the dissolved Lok Sabha, were among a large number of persons who attended the cremation.

AMBALA
Three killed
: Three persons were killed in two different accidents in the district on Saturday. Two scooterists, Kuldeep and Sarvinder, were killed when they were hit by an oil tanker near Bullana village. In second accident, Raju, a local resident, was killed when he was hit by an unknown vehicle in Railway Colony. The police has registered cases.

BHIWANI
Anganbadi union:
A meeting of the Anganbadi Workers and Helpers Union, Haryana, was held here at Nehru Park on Sunday. Ms Jagmati Malik, state President, criticised the Government for its anti-worker and anti-women policy and demanded the payment of arrears from May 1997 to June 1998. The following were elected office-bearers of the district unit: President — Ms Kamlesh Sangwan; Vice-President — Ms Bimla Bhakar; and Secretary — Ms Chandramani Kairo.

Surprise visit: Officials of the district were stunned with the surprise visit of the Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, here on Monday. He visited the city markets and directed the administration to construct cemented roads in various areas. The Minister of State for Home and Tourism, Mr Ram Bhajan Agarwal, also accompanied him.

Missing: Pinki, a newly married woman, was missing from Kalanaur bus stand, 29 km from here, since May 19. She was married to Dhooni of Unn village. Dhooni lodged a complaint with the police.

Nominated: The senior vice-president of the District Congress Committee, Mr Pradeep Kaushik, has been nominated chairman of the District Media Committee of the party and Mr R.S. Ranga has been appointed secretary. Mr Kaushik said a meeting of the party office-bearers would be held at Tilak Bhavan on June 2.

FARIDABAD
One killed
: Zahoor Quareshi was killed and two others were injured when a jeep in which they were travelling was overturned near Hodal, 60 km from here, on Saturday. In another case, an eight-year-old girl was crushed to death by a tanker while crossing the road near Prem Nagar. The police has registered cases

Nominated: Mr A.C.Sethi, president of the district unit of the Religious and Social Sabha, was nominated President of the Beopar Mandal Cell of the District Congress Committee. His appointment has been made by Mr Vasudev Saluja, Chairman, of Haryana Congress Beopar Mandal.

FATEHABAD
Distributed:
The district administration has distributed Rs 1.42 crore as widow pension, Rs 30.18 lakh as handicapped pension during 1998-99, according to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr V. Rajashekhar, here on Saturday.

PANIPAT
Five held:
The CIA staff has busted a gang of robbers with the arrest of five members near Sondhapur village and seized pistol, kinves and iron rods from their possession. The district police chief, Mr Manoj Yadav, said on Monday that they were planning a robbery. The police also recovered a stolen jeep.

SIRSA
Suicide:
Basant, alias Kalia (46), employee of the Health Department committed suicide by jumping into a water tank at Chatergarh Patti village, near here, on Sunday. According to sources, he was under depression after the death of his son last year.

Succumb to injuries: Ram Pal of Bathinda succumbed to his injuries at the Civil Hospital, Mandi Dabwali, 60 km from here, on Sunday. According to sources, he met with an accident on Sunday. The police has registered a case under Sections 279 and 304, IPC, against Mahipal Bishnoi of Sakta Khera village.top

BILASPUR
Condemned
: The Himachal Pradesh State Journalists Federation has condemned the attack on Geeta Ram Kaushal, a journalist of Ramshehar in Naiagarh tehsil of Solan district on Saturday. The association has demanded action and arrest of miscreants.

Three held: The police has arrested Shyam Lal, a policeman, Padam Lal and Jagdish Chand for allegedly assaulting the Yuvak Mandal president of Saikali, Mr Shayamlal Chaudhary, and his friend Mr Karam Singh. They were arrested under Sections 342, 325 and 506, IPC, according to Mr Anurag Garg, SP.

SUNDERNAGAR
Truck union:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the ad hoc committee of the District Mandi Truck Operators Union: Convener — Mr Mohan Lal Joshi; General Secretary - Mr Sarabjeet. The other members of the committee are Mr Baldev Saini, Mr Manjeet Singh, Mr Mohan Lal Saini, Mr Gurdev Singh, Mr Ramesh Gupta and Mr Sfurdill Khan. The committee has urged the Government to adopt single window system for payment of taxes.
