Cultural Scene
Dramatic effect of swords, spears
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, June 9 — As part of the tercentenary celebrations of the Khalsa Panth, yet another production was staged today at Tagore Theatre. 'Subh Karman Te Kabhoon Na Taraun', directed by Rani Balbir Kaur, was not only to be viewed as a religious play that required one to cover one's head in the theatre but also an aesthetic dramatisation of various forms of theatre of Punjab.

The play, organised by the Chandigarh Administration, was a dramatic display of the arts of the Nihangs, the martial hermits, Gatka Singhs, the war dancers, Dhadis, the war-epic singers and the Sufi balladers. Based on war epics of the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, 'Subh Karman..', proved to be a visual treat with emphasis on detailed costumes, designed by Komal Gupta, and even the use of masks and props like spears and swords.

The use of the traditional Dhadhi Sufi singers, including Idu Sharif, brought out the traditional form of spontaneous theatre. And the ingenious use of colourful masks, signifying evil and death, proved to be engaging as well as humorous in an otherwise serious subject. The audience roared viewing the 'caricaturish' figure of Aurangzeb, who seemed to have a hard time making the mask stay put on his head.

Choreography by renowned Bharatnatyam dancer Navtej Singh Johar, and Rani Balbir Kaur, captured the heroic spirit of the Khalsa.

The script was taken from the 'Dasam Granth', Inderjit Singh Tulsi's 'Badshah Darvesh', Bhai Nand Lal Goya's writings and Sufi poetry.

The sounds of spears beating the ground, clinking swords and the drums being beaten all had a hair-raising effect. Without going much into raising religious rhetoric the play turned out to be an experience of sorts of the various forms of the Punjabi art and literature. The presence of a huge cast of 25-odd people also had its own dramatic impact. 'Subh Karman.......' was designed by Dr Mahendra. Back

A full plate was priced at Rs 15 last year and it was still available at the old price. Half and quarter plates were also priced at old the prices of Rs 10 and Rs 7 per piece, respectively.

Similarly, a dozen spoons of different varieties were available between Rs 24 and Rs 50, depending upon their finish and quality. The same prices prevailed last year. Likewise, a standard size glass was still available for a price ranging between Rs 7 and Rs 12, according to quality. There was no change in the price of katoris of different sizes as these were still priced between Rs 5 and Rs 10 per piece.

And if one wanted to purchase a standard sized 1.5-litre jug there was a good news. It was still available at the old price between Rs 40 and Rs 100. The case of patilas and thalis was not different as these were priced at Rs 100 per kg in different parts of the city. The price of buckets was also the same, i.e Rs 90 a kg, while tiffins or dongas of all sizes were priced at Rs 100 per kg.

Garhvis of different sizes from 250 grams to 1.5 kg were priced between Rs 20 and Rs 50.

According to traders, the prices have remained unchanged as the market is flooded with utensils due the to growing number of manufacturing units in Jagadhri, Delhi and Mumbai. "The present situation is such that the supply exceeds the demand, and there is a general slump which has hit the trade and resulted in the stability of prices of stainless steel items," said Mr Sadhu Ram, a Sector 20 trader.
