Growing strawberries in Haryana Mr Kartar Singh Tomar IPS, jumped into politics and held a successful rally at Indri just after his retirement on 1.12.95. Unfortunately his wife lost both her legs and he was confined to her care for more than a year. After that he was initiated into the Radha Soami Mat and His Holiness Babaji gave volunteer seva in Dera where he remained for more than a year. After that he took upon himself to do some constructive work to improve the financial position of the farmer and the rural labour, where he was born and brought up. He worked very hard and came to the conclusion that unless the farmers diversified to some paying and cash crops their financial position could not be improved while growing traditional crops. He decided to grow strawberry under the guidance of Dr Kartar Singh, Director, Horticulture, Haryana. Mr Tomar visit almost all important strawberry fields in Himachal, Haryana and Delhi but no grower could tell about the mother plant of the plants grown by them. Dr Kartar Singh, Director Horticulture advised him to import plants from USA. He is the only grower in India who has imported the strawberry plants directly from USA. Mr Joginder Pal Prashar an NRI of England and Mr Som Dutt, a film producer of Bombay, visited his farm in February 1999. After seeing Mr Tomar's strawberry fruit Mr Prashar commented that he had been in England for 40 years, but he had never seen strawberry of this size in England or Europe. Mr Som Dutt commented that he had seen strawberry of half of it size in Bombay. Dr Kartar Singh, Director Horticulture visited his farm on 13.3.99 and commented that he had been to about 10 countries in the world, but he was yet to see such a beautiful strawberry field and so healthy disease free plants. The yield per plant was also verified by Dr Kartar Singh which, according to Mr Tomar's claim, was about 1 kg per plant, by counting the number of fruit and flower of the plant and the fruit plucked. A fruit, vegetable and flower show was organised by the District Administration and the Horticulture Department on 13.3.99 where Mr Tomar's strawberry got first prize. Mr Tomar has cultivated strawberry on American pattern very scientifically and with modern techniques. Mr Tomar's earnest desire is that as Maharashtra farmers are growing strawberry in 100s of acres of land and are exporting it, on the same pattern Haryana farmers of Yamunanagar should cultivate strawberry in 100 acres at least so that it is exported and the middle man who is fleecing the farmer is eliminated, and the financial position of the farmer is improved. Mr Tomar had a production of 210 quintal strawberry fruit in about one and half a acre of land which in itself is a world record. Melodious voice If one happens to pass by the secluded cremation ground of Subathu during night and suddenly a melodious song like 'Aayega aayega aayega aaney wala' or 'Jhoom jhoom dhalti raat' echoes from nowhere, don't be frightened. It's neither a witch nor any film shooting going on. She is a beggar who sings old hits of the sixties till the wee hours from the ruins of a damaged hut near the crematorium. Clad in rags, she comes to Chowk Bazar in the morning and demands breakfast and five kinds of sweets from halwais very authoritatively. Then she sits on a platform and switches over to old hits, ghazals, classicals and folk songs. One is pleasantly surprised when she sings old patriotic songs with the same perfection. The style, assent, manners and the abusing habit of this mentally deranged street singer in her fifties point to her roots around Lucknow. She does not remember the place she belongs to nor her name. The children tease her addressing ....... 'Salma' while elders call her 'chachi'. How she reached Subathu is not known. She can prove an asset to music lovers if helped by some social organisation. Surgery for the childless Endoscopic gynae surgery for the childless is becoming popular. This is due to the increasing success rate of fertility after endoscopic operations for opening of blocked tubes, removal of cysts from the ovaries or treatment of fibroids. This surgery involves a small cut, very little blood loss and a short stay in the hospital. According to Dr Sharda Adlakha, who is conducting the 10th endoscopic camp in collaboration with Dr Rakesh Sinha, endoscopist of Mumbai, about 80 per cent of ladies who underwent endoscopic surgery were able to bear children. The 10th camp is being organised at Adlakha Hospital Amritsar, from June 25 to 27. It is only at Amritsar in the entire northern region, that the maximum number of endoscopic surgery is being done. The first surrogate baby at Amritsar was also born under the treatment of Dr Sharda Adlakha. |
