Cultural Scene
Insight into history of Sikhism

CHANDIGARH: ‘The Sikh Heritage’ can be called an extension of the tercentenary celebrations of the birth of Khalsa. Though, the actual celebrations were over more than a month back, people still talk about them and many can be seen wearing the engraved ‘kara’ specially designed for the occasion.

‘The Sikh Heritage’, which is on display at Goverment Museum and Art Gallery till June 15, gives the viewers a deep insight into the history of Sikhism. The rare and precious exhibits could be put together due to the combined efforts of Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, Museum and Archives in Punjab, National Museum, New Delhi, Punjab and Sind Bank, New Delhi and four private collectors.

The exhibition can easily be divided into five sections (a) the sacred relics of the Gurus; (b) paintings of the Gurus by medieval and modern artists; (c) manuscripts relating to the Sikh history; (d) artifacts related to Sikh history; and (e) objects depicting life in Punjab through the ages.

What catches the eye in the painting section is the big frame of Guru Nanak Dev by Sobha Singh. The show opens showing Guru Nanak Dev as a child in the cradle and takes one through various stages of his life like his marriage, working as storekeeper, his encounter with Kaljug and Guru Nanak performing miracles.

There are a few miniature paintings of Guru Gobind Singh, Guru Gobind with ‘Panj Piaras’. The Ten Gurus have also been done in miniature style.

Besides these the arms displayed seem to be out of the world. Amongst the whole collection a sword with paintings of Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Sikh Gurus in gold work and Katar with Gurbani inscription in gold stand out.

Two ‘rumalas’ of China silk with Japji Sahib and portraits of Gurus embroidered are also very impressive. These belong to a private collector Mr S.S. Hitkari of New Delhi. Mr Kalyan Singh of Chandigarh has given porcelain jars bearing figures of Guru Nanak Dev and other Gurus to be displayed. Special mention should be made of the invaluable original letters written by Metcalfe to Maharaja Ranjit Singh regarding Faridkot affairs, an illustrated military manual of Maharaja Ranjit Singh regarding Faridkot and the treaty between Ranjit Singh and Raja Fatea Singh Kapurthala.

The entire affairs is very impressive and vast but it seems to be done up in an haphazard manner. It would have been better if the exhibits could have been arranged in a chronological order, giving some indication of the period from which they have been derived particularly so in the paintings section.Back

Price Watch
Litchi cheaper, grapes dearer
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, May 25 — Almost all common fruits have witnessed fluctuation in their prices during the past three days.

The most noticeable fall was in the prices of litchi and grapes. A kg of litchi, which was priced at Rs 50 last week, was available today at between Rs 35 and Rs 40 in different parts of the city. The wholesale price of the fruit has come down from Rs 450 to Rs 300-350 per 20 kg. According to traders, the price of the fruit has witnessed a downward trend due to increasing arrivals from Pinjore and the surrounding areas of the city where litchi is grown in abundance to fulfil.

On the other hand, grapes have virtually zoomed out of the reach of common people due to a steep hike in their prices during the past three days. A kg of the fruit, priced at Rs 50-60 last week, could be fetched today by shelling out Rs 80 in most of the markets. The wholesale price of the fruit has gone up from Rs 150 to Rs 250 per 5 kg. The hike was attributed to lesser arrivals of the fruit in the local market from parts of Maharashtra where the crop season is over these days. "We have been getting the fruit from cold storages, but now that is also hardly available these days," said a Sector 27 trader.

Similarly, the price of apricot has increased during this period. A kg of the fruit, priced at Rs 30 just two days ago, was available today at Rs 40. The wholesale price of the fruit has gone up from Rs 400 to Rs 500 per pack of 19-20 kg. According to traders, the hike was temporary due to lesser arrival of the fruit from Solan and other parts of Himachal Pradesh.

The price of papaya has also increased from Rs 15-20 a kg to Rs 24 a kg. Another fruit, which has become costlier during this period is melon as its price has increased from Rs 6-7 a kg to Rs 10. The price has been increased in apprehension that there will be scarcity of the fruit owing to damage to it due to rain in Punjab and parts of Rajasthan.

On the other hand, the pomegranate price has crashed from Rs 40 to Rs 25 a kg. The wholesale price has come down from Rs 120 to Rs 80 per 4 kg pack.

There was no fluctuation in the prices of ''chikoo'', and all varieties of mango. A kg of ''chiko'' was still available at Rs 25, while the ''safeda'', ''sandhuri'' and ''totapari'' varieties of mango were priced at Rs 20, Rs 30 and Rs 15 a kg, respectively. Similarly, there was no change in the price of watermelon as it was still available at Rs 7 to Rs 8 a kg. Back
