GURDASPUR
Recovered:
The police on Monday arrested Puran Chand, alias Kala, and Subhash Kumar alias Doctor, residents of Bharoli Kalan under Pathankot Sadar police station, on charges of stealing gold ornaments, electronic goods and cycles. The SSP, Mr Varinder Kumar, said large quantities of stolen goods were recovered from them. A case under Sections 379, 380 and 411 of the IPC has been registered against them.

HOSHIARPUR
Wheat procurement:
Mr G. Ramesh Kumar, officiating Deputy Commissioner, said here on Tuesday that various government agencies had procured 1.5 lakh tonnes of wheat as compared to 90000 tonnes during last year. He said the procurement work had been completed in almost all centres.

Condemned: The Punjab Pradesh Nagar Palika Karamchari Sangathan at its meeting held here on Tuesday condemned the government for its "anti-employee" attitude. Mr Kulwant Singh Saini, General Secretary of the Sangathan said in a press note that instead of giving more benefits to its employees, the government was withdrawing these. He said the DA instalment that was due for January '99 was announced in May and would now be given in September. He demanded the release of the enhanced DA in cash.

Looted: Two unidentified persons at gun point looted Rs 1.40 lakh from Raj Kumar, a commission agent on Monday, while he was returning to his village, near Bhilowal, 16 km from here. According to the police, Raj Kumar had withdrawn Rs 3.90 lakh from the Central Cooperative Bank in Hoshiarpur.

LUDHIANA
Price hike flayed:
The Federation of Tiny and Small Industries of India has flayed the hike in prices of HR coils by integrated steel plants. Mr Joginder Kumar, President of the federation, said the coils were the main raw material for the manufacture of bicycle components and that the bicycle industry would not be able to absorb the hike.

Seminar: A seminar on "Clean water for better health" was organised by the Bharat Jan Gyan Vigyan Jatha here on Sunday. Dr S. S. Sandhu, Commissioner of the local municipal corporation stressed the need for effective administrative measures by the corporation and the Pollution Control Board to solve water-related and other problems.

Elected: Dr Ajaib Singh Bansal, Professor and former Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Punjab Agricultural University, has been elected President of the Indian Society for Technical Education.

Appointed:
The Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Dr Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, has appointed Dr S.L. Singla, Professor, Department of Statistics, as Dean, College Development Council, a university release said here on Tuesday.

Inaugurated: Mr Manoranjan Kalia, State Health Minister, inaugurated a charitable homoeopathic dispensary opened by the Bharat Vikas Parishad at Dhobi Ghat, near Purani Anaj mandi, Nabha gate, here on Sunday. Mr Harinder Gupta, Secretary of the parishad said dispensary was opened under the Sewa-99 project and added the Mayadevi Charitable Trust had donated the land.

Murdered: Members of the Balmiki Dharam Sabha have condoled the death of veteran Akali leader Sohan Lal Dukhi, who was allegedly murdered on Monday. Mr Jatinder Kumar, President of the sabha, said the executive body held a condolence meeting at Balmiki colony.

Elected: Dr Narinder Kaur has been appointed organising secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Mahila Congress by Bibi Gurkanwal Kaur, President PMCC.

Projects: The Punjab State Council of Science and Technology has allotted three projects to Prof Tarlok Singh, Dr H.S. Rose and Dr Devinder Singh of Punjabi University. The project will study the bio-diversity of the Shivalik eco-system of Punjab, an university release said.

Dearness allowance: Members of the Punjab and UT Employees Joint Action Committee have demanded payment for the dearness allowance (DA) instalment in cash, announced recently by the Punjab Government. In a press release, Mr Darshan Singh Labana, General Secretary of the committee, said the government had played a 'cruel joke' on its employees by announcing DA instalment payable from October this year.

Strike:
Lawyers of the local Bar Association observed a day's strike on a call given by the Moga Bar Association in connection with the alleged manhandling of Mr Kulbhushan Sood, a senior counsel of the association, by the police. The Secretary of the association , Mr Shiv Kumar Kalyan, demanded strict action against the police officer responsible.

Dead: Harbans Kaur, mother of senior Akali leader, Mr Bhawanjeet Singh, a close associate of Mr Jagdev Singh Talwandi, died here on Sunday. She was cremated on Tuesday at her native village Mal Majra, 5 km from here.

Hailed: Mrs Lalit Joshi Bhardwaj, President of the Chandigarh Mahila Congress Committee, and other activists, on Tuesday, hailed the decision of Mrs Sonia Gandhi to withdraw her resignation as the President of the All-India Congress Committee. Women workers celebrated by organising dances and songs at various places in the city. The Mahila Congress workers described Mrs Sonia Gandhi as a real leader of the masses as she belonged to a family which made sacrifices for the country.

Demanded: The local unit of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidayarthi Parishad has demanded implementation of carry on system of examination of homoepathy students of Punjab. A delegation of students, which met a team of the Homoeopathic Council of India, urged the team members to implement the system in Punjab like it was in other states. The delegation also demanded intervention of central council into the matter of disaffiliation of students.

Dharna staged: The members of the Multi-purpose Health Workers Association of Haryana staged a dharna in support of their demands in front of the office of the Director General of Health in Sector 6 here today. The association later submitted a 21-point charter of demands to the Director General of Health, Dr P.L. Jindal. The association will hold district-level dharnas in June and July in support of their demands. A rally would be organised at the Chief Minister's residence at Bhiwani on August 8, said leaders of the association.

Mrs Satwinder Kaur Dhaliwal, the local MP, has promised a delegation of the All-India Ex-servicemen's Party that she will take up the issue of levying of octroi on the CSD Liquor, with the Punjab Chief Minster, Mr Parkash Singh Badal. A number of ex-servicemen are holding a dharna in front of the Phase 70 CSD Canteen to protest against the alleged 'illegal' levying of octroi on the CSD liquor by the Punjab Government for the past one week. The delegation, comprising Brig H.S. Ghuman, Brig Harwant Singh, Lieut Col H.S. Hans and Jaswant Singh Kumbhra was assured by the MP that she would also discuss their other demands like filling job quota by ex-servicemen only and allotment of land to war widows.

Inaugurated: The Industry and Election Minister, Punjab, Mr Sucha Singh Langah, inaugurated an exhibition of designer jewellery here on Monday. Mr JP Aswal ADGP Punjab, and Mr Jagjit Singh (Chief Engineer PUDA) were guests. Oriental and designer jewellery of gold and diamond was appreciated. Designs on display are by Mumbai based designers. Body found:
The body of Mr Joginder Singh, a resident of Sarseri village, was found from the Race Course Ground in the cantonment area here on Sunday.

Murder case: A case of murder has been registered against M. Sajid for allegedly killing M. Ahmed on Monday night in the city. According to the police, the cause of the murder was an altercation between the two.

SIRSA
Husband held:
Suresh Monga of Dabwali has been arrested for reportedly torturing his wife Usha Rani for dowry. In her complaint to the police, she had accused her husband, her brother-in-law and her mother-in-law for demanding Rs 1 lakh and beating her. A case has been registered.

Held for murder: Lal Chand of Nangal Mai village in Mahendergarh district has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife on April 24. The police said Lal Chand and his wife had a fight over the issue of abortion on the night of the murder.

Open darbar: As many as 96 complaints were disposed of at an open darbar presided over by Deputy Commissioner Avtar Singh here on Monday.

Sought:
The Residents Welfare Association on Tuesday demanded action against a junior engineer of the Public Health Department for allegedly harassing those seeking water connections. It also alleged that certain plumbers, in connivance with the junior engineer, were making money from those who approached them for getting the connections.

1 killed in clash: One person was killed on the spot in a clash which took place at Mundlana village, 40 km from here, on Monday. According to a report, the victim has been identified as Ram Diya, an employee of the post office. A dispute over the construction of a structure is stated to be the reason behind the clash. The police has registered a case under Sections 302, 323 and 34, IPC.

YAMUNANAGAR
Vaccination camp:
The Rotary Club (West ) vaccinated students of Saraswati Basic School against Hepatitis here on Monday. The vaccination was administered to 102 children below the age of 10. Mr Pankaj Malik, Secretary, Rotary Club (West), said here on Tuesday that the next two doses of the vaccination would be given on June 27 and November 14.

Advocate killed:
Atul Thakur (27), an advocate, died when his scooter skidded on the road near Ghagas, 10 km from here, while he was returning from Pandoh to Ghumarwin on Sunday. He was also the General Secretary of the district unit of the Janata Yuva Morcha.

Seminar postponed: A state-level conference and seminar scheduled to be held on May 30 at Sundernagar has been postponed. Mr Jai Kumar, President, Himachal Pradesh State Journalists Federation, said here on Monday that the new date for the function would be announced soon.
