ABOHAR
Killed:
Shamlal and pillion rider Jassa Singh were killed when their scooter was hit by a tractor near Kalatibba village on Sunday. The police has registered a case against the driver of the tractor, Nirmal Singh, who is absconding. In another incident, the Khuagian Sarwar police arrested Chander Mohan Jodhpuria, a resident of Rania village in the district, for smuggling more than 5 kg of opium near Haripura village. A case has been registered against him under the NDPS Act.

Inquiry ordered: An inquiry has been ordered into the reported sexual exploitation of a school-going daughter of a Dalit widow. The woman had alleged that her daughter was raped by some influential men when she (the mother) was sentenced to imprisonment for smuggling poppy husk from Rajasthan early this year.

Memorandum: PSTC contractors, in a memorandum faxed to the Punjab Chief Minister on Friday, has regretted that they have not been paid by the Punjab State Tubewell Corporation for the last six month for work under done the CADA scheme. A major part of the project was executed in Faridkot and Bhathinda circuits.

GURDASPUR
Dowry death:
Ranjeet Kaur (27), daughter of Mr Sardool Singh, a resident of Sidhwan village under Kahnuwan police station in the district, committed suicide yesterday. The deceased was allegedly under constant pressure by her in-laws to bring more dowry. She was married to Manjeet Singh about two years ago and had a nine-month old son. The police has booked Manjeet Singh, his father Balbir Singh and mother Sarbjot Kaur under Section 306 of the IPC. All accused have been arrested.

HOSHIARPUR
Arrested:
The Tanda and Bhullowal police, in a joint operation, claimed to have arrested four alleged criminals, including a couple, charged with murder and lootings in Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur districts. They were identified as Rajinder Kumar of Dehriwala under Tanda police station and Charanjit Singh and his wife Harkinder Kaur and Balwinder Singh, all residents of Sikri village under Haria police station. Mr R.P. Mittal, SSP, claimed that the accused were involved in the murder of a liquor vend employee Ashok Kumar at Sikri bus stand on September 25.

LUDHIANA
IndusInd Bank:
An on-the-spot painting competition for children was organised by IndusInd Bank here at the local stock exchange on Sunday to mark its first anniversary in the city. About 450 children from different schools participated.

Function: A function was organised at SDP College for Women here to pay homage to the Kargil martyrs. Mr Vijay Kumar Chopra, Editor of the Hind Samachar Group of Newspapers was the chief guest. He was presented with drafts for Rs 1,59,680 by the principals of various SDP institutions.

Arrested: The police has arrested Darshan Singh for allegedly executing a sale deed for a plot under the name of Acchar Singh. Darshan Singh was not the real owner of the plot.

NAWANSHAHR
Bridge:
Mr Jatinder Singh Kariha, President of the district unit of the SAD, in a statement issued to the Press here on Sunday said the Rahon-Mechhiwara bridge would be constructed soon. He said Mr Parkash Singh Badal, while presiding over a meeting of the zila jathedars at Chandigarh on Saturday, had said that the foundation stone of the bridge would be laid soon.

PHAGWARA
BJP meeting:
A special meeting of the state unit of the BJP will be held after October 14 at Chandigarh to analyse the reasons behind the defeat of party candidates in the Lok Sabha elections in the state. This was stated here on Sunday by Mr Dara Singh Sodhi, state BJP President.

Demanded: Senior Congress leader Joginder Singh Mann on Monday demanded the withdrawal of a hike in sales tax on diesel, pulses and biscuits in the state in the wake of a steep increase in diesel prices announced by the Centre.

Gyan Jyoti scheme: The State Bank of Patiala has launched a ''gyan jyoti'' scheme to remove illiteracy and encourage the concept of higher education among rural people. The scheme was started at Kalyan Sukha village, near Bathinda, by the Divisional General Manager of the bank, Mr O.P. Jindal. He also distributed prizes among about 20 students.

HISAR
Dissolved:
Mr Aman Kumar Nagra, President of the state unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), has dissolved the district unit of the party with immediate effect. This was stated by Mr O.P. Nimbal, spokesman for the party, here on Monday. He said the step had been taken in view of the poor performance of the party in the Lok Sabha elections. The district unit would be reorganised soon for achieving better results in the forthcoming Vidhan Sabha elections, he added.

NARAINGARH
Honoured:
Mr Sudhir Kumar Kalra, Lecturer in Chemistry at the local Government Senior Secondary School, was honoured with a memento by Mr Om Prakash Jain, state Education Minister, at a state-level science teachers' conference held at Ambala Cantonment recently.

ROHTAK
Workshop:
A three-day state-level workshop of teaching methods, organised by the local DAV School, concluded here on Sunday. Experts on teaching science and English from Delhi and Haryana took part. According to Mr Rajesh Jain, principal of the school, the workshop discussed the adoption of the latest teaching methods.

SIRSA
Water supply:
Sahib Ram Mahar, Sarpanch of Chakjallu village, said here on Monday that residents of the village were facing an acute shortage of drinking water as the Public Health Department had failed to maintain water supply to the village. He urged the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, to take prompt action to restore the water supply to the village.
