Four booked for seeking dowry

SAS NAGAR, Oct 25 — The husband and in-laws of a woman in Phase XI here have been booked by the police for allegedly harassing her for dowry. A case has been registered by the police against Gurpreet Singh, Karnail Singh, Surjeet Kaur and Rajwant Kaur.

According to information available, the father of the victim, Mr Gurbhachan Singh, a resident of Gurdaspur, in a complaint with the police said the in-laws of her daughter had been demanding dowry from her. A case under the Dowry Act has been registered against the suspects.

Cheating case: The Nayagoan police has booked a property dealer of Kansal village and his associates for allegedly preparing fake ownership documents of a piece of land in the village.

Sources in the police said the case came to the knowledge of the owner of land, Puran Singh, when the property dealer, Randhir Sood, along with his associates came to take the possession of the land, measuring 1 kanal and 4 marlas.

Inquires revealed that the property dealer had reportedly forged the ownership documents of the land by impersonation. The complainant said the day — August 28, 1998 — on which the forged papers were produced, he was away on central government duty in Madhya Pradesh.

A case has been registered under sections 419, 420, 465, 467, 468, 474 and 120-B of the IPC.Back

Engg, arch students to stage play

CHANDIGARH, Oct 25 — Students of Panjab University, Punjab Engineering College and the Chandigarh College of Architecture will stage a play "Rangliya Rangrej'' at the open air theatre in Rock Garden on October 30 and 31.

According to information available, it is a unique presentation of mixed elements, prepared by collective efforts of youngsters for the residents of the city.

Impressed by the commitment of the youngsters, Nek Chand, the creator-director of Rock Garden, has offered the premises for the staging of this presentation.Back

Ugandan troupe performs in city

CHANDIGARH, Oct 25 — The Indian Council for Cultural Relations today presented a colourful performance of Ugandan dance and music at the TTTI Auditorium in Sector 26. The performance was staged by the Planets, a Ugandan troupe, performing for the first time in the city.

With quaint-looking Ugandan instruments doling out mesmerising tunes, today's evening was about melody and merriment. The instruments included drums of various sizes, a wooden xylophone, besides various ethnic Ugandan instruments.

The evening began with 'Embaga', a dance of the central Uganda, performed to welcome a bride into her new home and community. This was followed by another dance, 'Bwola' of northern Uganda, in which young males propose to their prospective brides.

The director of this dance group was Kiyimba Musisi. The dancers and musicians included Erasmus Sebunya, Jane Namuloomdo, Harriet Nambusi, Joel Kalyesubula and Tadeo Tebandeke.

The audience also had a taste of instrumental music of northern Uganda when the troupe played 'Ekitaguroo' on the drums.Back

Capsicum dearest vegetable

SAS NAGAR, Oct 25 — Prices of the commonly used vegetables remained stable in local markets. The dearest item was capsicum, which was being sold at Rs 40 a kg in a Phase 5 market.

Peas, selling at Rs 30 a kg were the second dearest vegetable in various markets. Last week also the vegetable was available at Rs 30 a kg. Vendors in Phase 4 market were selling garlic at Rs 25 a kg.

A survey of different markets showed that the ongoing strike by transporters against the hike in diesel prices had little effect on the prices of the commonly used vegetables. Cauliflower, which was being sold at Rs 8 a kg last week, was today available at the same price. Similarly, cucumber was selling at Rs 8 a kg. A better quality of the vegetable was, however, was being sold at Rs 10 a kg.

Cabbage was being sold at Rs 10 a kg in Phase 2 market. Price of beans, however, registered a marginal fall. These were selling at Rs 10 a kg.

Bitter gourd and gourd were available at Rs 15 a kg and Rs 6 a kg, respectively. Potato was selling at Rs 3 a kg in local markets. Onion was being sold for Rs 10 a kg.

In Phase 5 market tomato and brinjal were being sold at Rs 12 a kg and Rs 8 a kg, respectively. Besides, two different qualities of lady's finger were available in local markets. While the better quality was selling at Rs 10 a kg, the other one was being sold at Rs 8 a kg.Back



 


Sacred Heart, DAV-8 cagers win

CHANDIGARH, Oct 25 — Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, in the girls' section, and DAV Public School, Sector 8, in the boys' section, moved ahead in the league by winning their matches against Dev Samaj Junior Model School, Sector 21, 8-4, and St John's High School, Sector 26, 28-17, respectively, on the second day of the Chandigarh Sub-Junior Basketball Championship being played here at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8.

In the match between St John's and DAVP-8, halftime score was 12-12. The scorers were Sahil (12), Ravinder (6), Rishab Gosain (4), and Varun (4), for the winners. Karan (8), Varun (5), Nitesh and Suraj (2 each) scored the points for the losers.

In the girls' section, the match played between Sacred Heart and Dev Samaj Jr-21, the halftime score was 6-2. Points were scored for the winners by Prabhkiran (4), Tanya (2) and Mehak (2), while Anju scored four points for the losers.

In another girls' section match, Government Model High School, Sector 26, beat Shishu Niketan Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, 21-1, with the halftime score being 12-1. Simranjit Kaur was the star for the winners with a tally of 13 points, followed by Sumandeep Kaur and Navneet Kaur who scored four points each. Manu was the lone scorer for the losers.

In a boys' section match, New Public School, Sector 18, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, 33-13, with the halftime score being 20-10. Navdeep scored the maximum points (14) for the winners, followed by Akshya (13) and Gurinder (6), while Ayush of the losing team scored nine points.

Cricket tourney: Bhavan Vidyalya, Sector 27, today made it to the semi-finals of the under-16 section of the Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament being played here at St John's High School in Sector 26.

The other semi-finalists in this category include St Anne's-32, St John's School and St Xavier's School-44.

Taekwondo trophy: St Joseph's High School, Sector 9, won the overall trophy in the Open Taekwondo Championship concluded at the Sector 10 Skating Rink yesterday, while the runners-up trophy went to Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21. Kishore Kumar of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46, was adjudged the best player in the open weight category. Mr K.K. Addiwal, Mayor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, was the chief guest.

Dr J.P.S. Sidhu: Dr J.P.S. Sidhu, Joint Director for Sports of the Chandigarh Administartion, has been invited to the fifth IOC Congress in Sports Sciences at Sydney in Australia from October 31 to November 5. Dr Sidhu has done a good work on the research papers relating to body composition, cybervision and stress management. Himself a renowned hockey player, Dr Sidhu had earlier attended a solidarity course in hockey also.Back

Judo championship: Saleem Khan of Judo Coaching Centre, Sector 42, won the title in the less than 25 kg category of the sub-junior boys' event in the Chandigarh Sub-Junior and Junior Judo Championship which concluded yesterday at Shri Guru Harkishan Model School in Sector 38-D. The three-day meet was organised by the Amateur Judo Association of Chandigarh. Mr Siddharth Chattopadhya, IPS and President of the association, gave away the prizes.

Results: Himanshu Batra won the singles title along with Akshay, won the doubles title also.

Earlier, the under-17 girls' team of the school, comprising Chanderdeep, Neha Jolly and Swati, finished third in the CBSE Table Tennis Tournament held recently at Panchkula.Back
