ABOHAR
Killed:
Gurmukhram Kamboj, a resident of Kandhwala Amarkot village, was crushed to death on Saturday by a truck opposite the local police station. The police has registered a case.

Suicide: Dhapa Bai, wife of Om Parkash, on Saturday reportedly consumed a pesticide used for killing rats and died immediately at Kandhwala Amarkot village. Family sources said she was perturbed over the death of her daughter-in-law.

BATALA
Society:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Batala Welfare Society: patrons — Mr J.N. Sharma and Mr Ashok Aggarwal; chairman — Mr Ramesh Bhardwaj; president — Mr Satpal Sharma; vice-president — Mr Madan Lal Aggarwal; honorary secretary — Mr Shambhu Sharma; and secretary — Mr K. Goel.

Lok Adalat: A Lok Adalat will be held at the Batala Club here on Friday, according to Mr V.M. Goel, Chairman, Lions Club (Smile). He said the Passport Officer, Jalandhar, Mr Rakesh Kumar, would preside over the adalat and settle the cases on the spot.

FAZILKA
Cracker sparks:
Sandeep Kumar (22), alias Deepa, a resident of Oddanwali Basi, died of cracker fire burns here on Saturday. The accident occurred when he was making crackers at a shop in Gandhi Nagar. The crackers caught fire due to an electrical short circuit in the shop.

FEROZEPORE
Elected:

HOSHIARPUR
Condemned:
The local district Congress Committee, in a meeting held here on Sunday condemned the SAD-BJP Government in the state for increasing sales tax on various items, including petrol and diesel, due to which the rates of almost all commodities had gone up. It was suggested at the meeting that instead of imposing taxes on the public, the government should curtail its expenditures. The meeting also condemned the state government for its proposal to scrap seven corporations in Punjab due to which about 21,000 employees would be jobless.

LUDHIANA
Oration:
The 17th Dr L.H. Lobo memorial oration was delivered on Sunday by Prof A.K. Banerjee, an eminent neurosurgeon and Director of Vimhans, New Delhi, here at Christian Medical College and Hospital. Professor Banerjee spoke on "Neurosurgery Today and Tomorrow" and highlighted the latest developments and future projections relating to the treatment of neurological ailments. The oration was followed by a scientific symposium on "Subarchnoid Haemorrhage" and leading experts in various disciplines expressed their views. Around 200 delegates attended the function.

MOGA
Murdered:
Miscreants murdered an employee of a wine contractor at Sukhanand village on Saturday. The employee was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon while he was selling liquor at the shop. The cause of the murder could not be ascertained. The police has registered a case and the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

Telegrams delayed: Industrialists, businessmen, journalists and common men here expressed concern here on Sunday over the inordinate delay in the transmission of telegrams booked at the local telegraph office. It is learnt that out of the seven employees at the telegraph office, five have been on leave for the past about one month. Almost all telegraphic messages from here are delayed by about 12 to 24 hours.

NAWANSHAHR
Convention:
The local unit of the Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti organised a one-day convention at Doaba Club here on Sunday. It was attended by panches, sarpanches, social workers, writers and intellectuals. Mr Ashok Kumar Sikka, SDM and Secretary of the District Literacy Society, and Dr P.L.Garg, State Co-ordinator of the samiti, among others, addressed the convention. They stressed the need for creating an awakening among the masses against superstitions and social evils prevalent in society.

Memorandum: Mr Varinder Kumar Malhotra and Mr Narinder Sharma, Press Secretary and General Secretary of the Punjab State General Categories Welfare Federation respectively, have welcomed the decision of the state government to implement the Supreme Court's verdict regarding quota promotions. They have urged Mr Parkash Singh Badal to make the notification date-bound to release cadre-wise seniority lists in all departments in order to put an end to the reservations in Class I and II on the pattern of the Centre and the Haryana Government. They submitted a memorandum to Mr Badal at the nearby Shahabpur village on Sunday.

SANGRUR
Pulse polio:
Polio drops were administered to about 8,000 children, below five years old, here and in the surrounding areas, according to Dr Anup Kad, Senior Medical Officer at the local Civil Hospital. As many as 37 teams comprising medical staff, including three mobile teams, worked to make the campaign a success.

Tree plantation: As many as 71 saplings of medicinal and ornamental plants were planted during a tree plantation function at the Government College of education, Sector 20-D. on Monday. Mr K.A.P. Sinha, the chief guest at the function, planted saplings and lauded the college authorities for organising such a drive. Students presented ghazals related with trees on the occasion. The function was organised by the NSS unit of the college.

Printmaking workshop: Government College of Art is organising a workshop on relief process of printmaking from Monday to Friday. Mr Jayant Gajera, a distinguished printmaker associated with the Indian Printmakers' Guild of New Delhi, is conducting the workshop. During the workshop, the students will get acquainted with the creative process of Jayant Gajera's printimaking. The timing of the workshop will be from 10 am to 5 pm daily.

Music programme: The Payal Musical Group will stage a Himachali music programme on Thursday at Tagore Theatre in Sector 18. Two prominent singers, Punam Thakur and Ritu Sharma will be on stage. A music cassette 'Nachdian Gandian Dharan' of these singers will be released at the programme.

AMBALA
UCO Bank:
UCO Bank will open eight more branches in Haryana, Mr R.K. Samiya, Regional Manager of the bank, said here on Sunday. He was inaugurating the seven-day service facility at the Ambala Cantonment branch of the bank. Ms Anju Mathur, Manager of the bank, said the facility would be provided at some other branches too.

HISAR
Assaulted:
A police party, which had gone to Madanheri village on Friday for conducting a raid in connection with the recovery of liquor, was allegedly assaulted by some villagers. A case has been registered against four persons, Kuldeep, Dharamvir, Vikas and Anil, on a complaint by Sub-Inspector Maha Singh.

Website launched: The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Apoorva Kumar Singh, launched a website on the Internet on Friday at Fatehchand College for Women here. The Deputy Commissioner said "we will have to tap the full potential of computers as these had opened up infinite possibilities." Several prominent citizens of the city were present on the occasion.

Two killed: Two persons were killed and four injured in two road accidents in Hisar district during the past 24 hours. One person was killed and three were injured when a Canter carrying them collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction near Sorkhi village on the Hisar-Delhi highway. In another accident, Sube Singh of Sachcha Khera village died on the spot and his friend was injured in an accident near Gaibipur village.

ROHTAK
Nominated:
The president of the Maharshi Dayanand University Teachers Association (MDUTA), Mr Somvir Rathi, has nominated the following office-bearers of the association: vice-president — Mr B.S. Sindhu; joint secretary — Dr Randhir Singh; and treasurer — Dr A.S. Kajal.

Accident: Sonu, a boy, was crushed to death by a four-wheeler near Dujana village on the Rohtak-Jhajjar road on Saturday. The victim was going to school on a bicycle. A case has been registered against the driver, Prakash, of Chamanpura village.

SIRSA
Recovered:
The police recovered a stolen jeep on Saturday from Shera Bhaini, near Maham, in Rohtak district. Mr Kameshver Kumar, Superintendent of Police, said here on Sunday that the jeep belonged to Mr Navdeep Singh of Khenwali village in Sirsa district. It was stolen on October 20 from Mandi Dabwali, about 60 km from here. The suspect responsible for stealing the jeep is absconding.

Arrested: Khir Ram, and Bhajan Singh were arrested by the police here on Saturday on a charge of theft. The Superintendent of Police said on Sunday that both accused had stolen a bag containing Rs 20,000 , a 32 bore revolver and 12 cartridges from Mr Dharminder Singh, a farmer of Bajekan village in the district. In a complaint to the police, Mr Dharminder Singh said he had kept his bag in the tool box of his tractor from where it was stolen by the accused. The police has recovered the stolen goods.

SONEPAT
Attacked:
Jagbir sustained serious injuries when he was allegedly attacked on Sunday by two persons at Barwasni village, about 5 km from here. It is learnt that Jagbir's brother, who came to his rescue, was also attacked. He was not, however, hurt. Jagbir was rushed to the medical college hospital at Rohtak. The cause of the attack was not immediately known. A case has been registered.

Stolen scooter recovered: The police has arrested two persons and recovered a stolen scooter from them. The Superintendent of Police, Mr K.P. Singh, told reporters here on Monday that the arrested persons had been identified as Udey Bhan of Garhi Ghasita and Jagdish of Gian Nagar in the city. The culprits told the police that they had stolen the scooter from outside Dhawan Banquet Hall here. The scooter belonged to Mr Arun Jaitley. A case has been registered.

Theft: Thieves are reported to have stolen a colour TV and cash from a nursing home, near Hem Nagar Ramlila ground here, on Sunday. According to Dr K.K. Dua, owner of the nursing home, this was the fourth such theft committed during the past few months. A case has been registered.

Gambler held: Kailash, a notorious satta gambler, was caught red-handed on Sunday by a police party while he was engaged in gambling at Kalan Mohalla here. The police recovered Rs 1,645 in cash and some satta slips from him.

Case registered: The CIA police on Sunday arrested Bijender, a youth of Dubeta village, and seized a country-made pistol and two cartridges from him. A case under the Indian Arms Act has been registered against him.

YAMUNANAGAR
Polio camp:
A free surgical correction camp for polio cases was organised at a hospital in Jagadhri on Sunday. A team of orthopaedic surgeons from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak, examined about 200 polio patients. Out of these, about 80 cases were selected for operation, which will be performed on October 31 and November 1.

Celebrated:
The district unit of the Bharatiya Balmiki Dharma Samaj celebrated Maharshi Balmiki's birth anniversary here on Saturday. A procession was also taken out on the occasion.

Expedition: Mr B.L. Raghav, SDM, flagged off two teams of inter-block youth trekking expedition at Nalti, near Ghumarwin, on Saturday. The District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Mr M.P. Vaidya, said the eight-day expedition would interact with various organisations apart from visiting places of tourist interest and conclude at Naina Devi on October 30.top
