8 Army men chargesheeted
NEW DELHI, Sept 11 (PTI) — The CBI has chargesheeted eight Army Headquarters officials, including a retired Lieutenant Colonel, and a trader for allegedly cheating the government of over Rs 22.26 lakh on the basis of "bogus bills" passed in favour of "fictitious firms" in 1994-95. The charge sheet, filed before Special Judge Ajit Bharihoke, named Lt Col Pakki Rama Shankar Rao (now retired), Senior Accounts Officer H.L. Gulati, Assistant Accounts Officers Stephen George and R.N. Dhyani, Senior Auditors S.B. Sharma and Pati Ram Suman, Auditor Surinder Singh Tomar, Upper Division Clerk Deepak Dutt Mudgal and his brother Rahul Dutt Mudgal as accused.

8 die in crash
KABUL, Sept 11 (AFP) — Thirteen persons were killed after a military helicopter transporting civilians crashed between Kabul and the southern capital of Kandhar, sources said today. Hospital and diplomatic sources based in Islamabad said the crash occurred 300 km South of Kabul, half-way to Kandhar where the ruling the Taliban has established their base. Sources said most of the casualties were women and children, the family members of two airforce pilots.

Anwar’s charge
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 (AP) — Anwar Ibrahim's claim that he is being poisoned in prison in a high-level conspiracy today revived talk about the brutal treatment the Malaysian politician has received in the past year. "It is only too apparent from three episodes since Anwar's arrest... that Anwar's life is in mortal danger," Chandra Muzaffar, deputy president of the National Justice Party headed by Anwar's wife, Azizah Ismail, said in a statement.

17 feared drowned
HYDERABAD, Sept 11 (PTI) — At least 17 agricultural labourers were feared drowned in the swollen Chilleru stream near Jangareddygudem in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh last night, the police said today. Thirty-three farm labourers were returning home in a tractor after work when the vehicle was washed away by a flash flood, the police said. Seventeen labourers were feared killed.

10 die in collision
TEHERAN, Sept 11 (AFP) — Ten persons were killed and 11 injured when a minibus smashed into a truck in southwest Iran late yesterday, hours after 17 persons died in an explosion when a truck full of Afghans collided with a petrol tanker, the official Irna agency said today. The accident occurred near Dorud in lorestan province as the minibus was trying to overtake a car.

14 cops face charges
CAIRO, Sept 11 (AFP) — Fourteen security officers are facing disciplinary charges over their failure to prevent a man attacking President Hosni Mubarak with a penknife on Monday, Interior Minister Habib Al-Adly said today. Adly pointed the finger at the officers who did not exercise enough caution and "should have been suspicious of the attacker."

AUCKLAND, Sept 11 (AFP) — The USA has suspended all military sales to Indonesia because of its failure to stop the violence in East Timor, US President Bill Clinton said here today. He said it was "imperative" that Indonesia allow in peacekeepers to restore order, adding that he expected a development "in the next couple of days."

ALGIERS, Sept 11 (AFP) — Sixteen persons were killed in Algeria from Wednesday to Friday in the build-up to a key referendum on a peace deal for armed Islamists who are waging a bloody campaign against the government, press reports said.
