Filmmaker Bobby Bedi shares his upcoming plans after completing his much applauded Khalsa Heritage Memorial project
Jasmine Singh

Bobby Bedi… There are different designations that could describe him - producer, director, writer, and artist. But left to him for his own introduction, Sundeep Singh 'Bobby" Bedi rather likes to be known as a story teller who strayed in the path of filmmaking, exploring artistic space. Looking at his repertoire of work you wouldn't doubt this a bit. Trying to relax after the much appreciated Khalsa Heritage Memorial work, Bobby Bedi shares his exciting future plans in his blanketed voice thanks to the nip in the weather. There is no dip in the spirits, their never will!

"I strayed into movies; I did not come here to make money. I enjoy telling stories in my own way. In the recent times I have enjoyed watching Dabangg, but I know that I cannot make this kind of movie. I would make movies, which have some socially relevant message," he shares. Defying critics and going by his instinct and understanding of cinema, Bobby did produce films like Bandit Queen, Mangal Pandey, Saathiya, Maqbool, which had lasting impressions. Even when he is not thinking about cinema, Bobby is actually thinking about it! His upcoming projects are an interesting mix of his passion and thought.

Shiv Kumar Batalvi and more…

I have been working on this subject extensively in terms of research, meeting up with the family, experimenting with music. The basic script completed, I have a tentative cast in mind but I would talk about it only when it is finalised. The film is more about Batalvi as a poet rather than as a personality. People still have many things to say about Batalvi, like he use to drink and was a philandered, which are hardly true. That man like millions of others was in search of something. He wasn't a sad person; Batalvi was rather a happy soul. This is an interesting topics and I wouldn't want to give it just a regular treatment. I want people to know the poet Shiv.

Return of the Bandit Queen

The sequel to Bandit Queen is still in the developing stage. The earlier Bandit Queen paints a picture of a village girl who had to go through a lot because of her low caste. The sequel however is placed in an urban set up where the same woman comes out of Tihar jail, gets elected in the parliament twice. And all this was possible because of her low caste. The beauty of the subject lies in the fact that how society treats the same person from the same caste differently.

The story teller

I want to tell stories in a manner that kids from kindergarten to grown ups can understand and gain knowledge out of it. After the work on Khalsa Heritage Memorial, I would be doing another building that will be set in the Kurukshetra University, depicting the mutiny of 1857. So, whether it is a story of a girl or of a sepoy I want to use the latest media tools to share the story.

Directorial liberty

It is okay to take liberty as a director if only it helps in the script or takes the movie forward. People had different take when Mangal Pandey was released. Some said he was married, others said he wasn’t. In such a situation the director can take a call. In all this the script should not be affected, and the real element should not be disturbed.

Creative shots

With Khalsa Heritage Memorial project we explored new creative dimensions, from printing in animation, multiple screen projects, which explored ideas that haven't been touched before. Amidst all the things that I am doing like the Content Flow company that deals purely in education through media skills, I would also want to make a movie on female infanticide. This is such a big issue in Punjab, then again I wouldn't want to give it a run of the mill treatment because the topic has depth.

Legacy bearers
Three generations of Rampur Sahaswan Gharana carry on the rich heritage of the classical music bestowed on them

AWESOME THREESOME: Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan, Ghulam Hassan Khan and Ustad Ghulam Sadiq Khan, (clockwise)

The three Khans of Rampur Sahaswan Gharana make a formidable team. These classical vocalists have carried on the rich heritage of their forefathers forward and earned a distinctive name.

Together in Chandigrah for a concert organised by Triveni Sangeet Sabha in collaboration with Department Of Cultural Affairs, Haryana, at Randhawa Auditorium, Punjab Kala Bhavan-16 on Sunday, they talk about music and their journey.

"Classical music has a direct connection with the soul. It's not something that comes with a shelf life. It was there thousands of years before when Vedas were being written and would be there for times to come," says Padam Shri Ustad Ghulam Sadiq Khan, comfortable in the company of his son Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan and grandson Ghulam Hassan Khan.

Ustad Ghulam Sadiq Khan has been honoured at various platforms, his concerts have taken him around the world and his shagird (students) have made him proud. He finds his greatest follower in his son Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan who not only learnt the nuances of the art from him but also is proudly carrying forward the legacy (only briefly the roles change when a doting son breaks off the conversation asking his father, 'Aap please biscuits hi leejiye' explaining to those present 'one needs to take care of his health).

Abbas Khan not only specialises in Khayal but also sings ghazals, sufi and is a composer. He has given music in film industry but is very selective of what he does. Why don't we have another Baiju Bawra or a Mughal-E-Azam, the movies that gave classical music to masses? "Well, there are two reasons," answers Abbas Khan thinking long before he answers. "One, we no more have a Naushad, K Asif or OP Nayyar. The ones calling the shots in the industry are not artistes but marketing, management guys making money not art. Second, the increasing globalistion has made way for the western influences that are being appreciated more by the youth today."

If globalisation threatens Indians losing interest in their own culture, it has also made non-Indians to take notice and appreciate our art. "Valid Saheb's many shagird are from Australia and Argentina," says Abbas Khan.

Concerts have taken Abbas world over and he shares one of his favourite memory. “It was in 1998 at Griffith University, Australia when I had to give half an hour talk and half an hour programme. I expected some 100 odd audience and many of them Indians. But to my sweet surprise for a nine am presentation, the auditorium had around 700 in audience and none of them Indian. Even the person who accompanied me on tabla was an Australian. That half an hour recital of Miyan Ki Todi and the standing ovation that I got brought tears in my eyes."

Abbas Khan has his base in Mumbai and but to ensure his son gets the same talim (instruction) as him, he has kept his son under the tutelage of his father. "Music has immense power. I remember having read somewhere, 'If you want to destroy any nation, finish its language and music," says Abbas Khan. And, in his own might, he's proudly serving the family tradition and ensuring his son does that as well…

On breaking stereotypes

Freida Pinto
Freida Pinto

Being the first Indian actress to have made it big in international cinema, Freida Pinto, whose career is on a roll post Slumdog Millionaire, says she is glad to have cut through the stereotypical way Indians have been portrayed in Hollywood so far.

The 27-year-old actress already has a variety of roles including films like Woody Allen's You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger and Tarsem Singh's Greek war drama Immortals in her kitty, all within three years of making her debut.

"I feel absolutely great to have broken the Indian stereotype. It was high time that Indians got their proper representation in Hollywood," Pinto told in an interview.

"After the kind of characters that we have seen in earlier films and TV series like Goodness Gracious, people started looking at every Indian character in a similar light.

Cabdrivers who spoke in a certain way, a father who wanted his daughter to have an arranged marriage... there was no other way of looking at it." The actress, who is here to screen her latest film Trishna, feels it was Slumdog Millionaire, which made outsiders view artistes from India in a new light. — PTI

Doc Talk
Dimpled cheeks!
Dr Harpreet S Bakshi

Now getting cheek dimples like actress Deepika Padukone is no more a dream, it can be achieved by cosmetic surgery. It is possible to surgically create permanent natural looking dimples and the surgical procedure to create dimples is very simple and straight forward when done properly. Dimple creation surgery requires nothing more than just local anesthesia.

In some cultures dimples are considered a sign of good luck and prosperity. Also, dimples help brighten a smile and add character. Many individuals state that one of their siblings or close friends have a dimple and they are happy to know that dimple surgery is available to give them that option as well.

Dimple creation surgery is a relatively easy and painless way to form a dimple for those people who have always wanted one. Will having a dimple change your life or bring you better luck? But it will change your appearance and enhance your face value...

A natural dimple is usually formed when there is a small defect in the cheek musculature (most often the buccinators muscle). The skin overlying this small defect is stuck down to the underlying connective tissue and creates a dimple in the skin with facial animation (smiling).

Dimple creation surgery can simulate this naturally occurring process. To create a dimple, a small painless incision is made in the inside of your cheek. There is no incision, scar or mark on the outside skin and requires a small suture to be passed through the inside of the cheek where the dimple is desired. When this suture is tied it causes a dimpling in the overlying skin. At first there is a dimple present even without smiling, but after several days, or sometimes a few weeks, the dimple is only present while smiling or moving the face. The scarring between the inner skin and muscle will cause a permanent dimple even after the suture is absorbed.

Dimple creation surgery can be done on any type or size cheek. You can decide where the dimples will be, or the plastic surgeon can decide with you where the most optimal place for the dimples should be on your face.

Dimple creation surgery can be done with nothing more than local anesthesia. You will be awake and comfortable during the entire dimple surgery process. The dimple surgery takes about 30 minutes to perform and you can go home right away after the procedure.

Dimple creation surgery is safe and effective, but also potentially reversible. There are no complications with dimple formation aside from a little bit of swelling and bruising. You should be able to resume your normal activities the following day. You will take antibiotics for only a couple of days after your dimple creation surgery.

Although the cheek is the usual place that patients might request a dimple, the chin is also a frequently requested site. It is possible to make chin dimples as well without any incisions on the outside skin.

stress buster
Be a child once more
Renee singh

Catching up with friends back from school and we were chatting. "Remember when we used to play hopscotch in the street and wow man those were carefree days, so much fun, where did the fun disappear over the years? I guess dealing with life just made it happen."

It is just that over the years we have allowed chronic stress to settle in within us. We allow our bodies to go into stress mode with elevated stress hormones and this leads to tension in the body and other physical changes. But there are of course ways of protecting your body from the damages of long term stress.

As kids certain stress relieving strategies came naturally to us. As adults we seem to have forgotten how to relieve stress naturally and we get into the clutches of stress.

Looking back into the good old days of your childhood when fun was just a normal part of life and one didn't have to make a conscious effort to relax.

Unfortunately we have forgotten these natural soothing stress relievers as we grow older and become stressed adults. Travel back to the carefree times of your youth with some of the strategies you tried as a child and feel the stress just vanish away!

Daydreaming

As kids we made up stories in our heads to dream about fun times. Living in a beautiful field or having a fairytale existence, these are things we enjoy. Your inner child can keep creativity alive while reducing stress and increasing wellness.

Naps

As a kid you either loved or hated your little naps but always took them. Many adults think that napping is laziness but this is not so. Curling up in a comfy chair for a short snooze brings relaxation, increased productivity and health benefits. Work out a snooze into your schedule it has a definite health benefit, your inner child will thank you for it.

Magical hugs

In your childhood a hug from your mother always soothed things, made them better. The power of touch is a great emotional support.

Playing with pets

When kids play with pets they share a great affection but as adults sometimes we loose that connect. Pets help reduce blood pressure and increase healthy lifestyle behaviours. Give a better social support than humans.

Singing

As children we enjoyed singing silly songs without inhibitions. Don't worry about being in focus just enjoy yourself.

Playing games

As adults we don't have much time or incline for this but there are many stress relieving benefits from games.

Drawing and painting

Just working with colours gives a great sense of relief and releases certain hormones which relax you.

Writing notes

Earlier days we wrote letters but now we can journal as a stress management technique.

Team sports

As kids we love it. Try it even now, working as a team always makes you happy.

Image the future

Be a child and look into the future, looking forward to a beautiful thing in life always makes you relaxed.

Be a kid once more, nurture the inner child and find the joy and peace you're looking for.

The cast of Desi Boyz is stylish. We take a look at them on and off screen.

(Clockwise)Men in purple: The boys are in their filmy avatar and they look good in purple. How tone are their physiques!; Awesome foursome: The cast owns the stage in black. We think Deepika Padukone looks smashing and Chitrangda Singh could have dressed better. The boys look young; Hotties: We can't take our eyes off of their amazing legs. Their dresses are pretty similar and they both do justice to them.

Ready to Dhoom!

DEbut pair: Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif

After an extensive hunt for a new face for the leading lady for Dhoom 3, which included international aspirants as well, Yash Raj Films is now pleased to announce and confirm that Katrina Kaif will play this role.

The Director, Vijay Krishna Acharya (Victor), along with Aditya Chopra, has made this choice after considerable deliberations. When asked on the selection process, Victor said: "After almost a year of searching for a new face for Dhoom 3, we were still unable to find the perfect debutant to play the lead role. We even reached out to international talent but were still unable to find someone who stood out. Both Adi and I really wanted to be sure that the person we chose would be perfect for the role.

Once we decided to go with a known face and not pursue the new-comer route, Katrina was the obvious choice for all of us. The first time pairing of Aamir with Katrina will also certainly add value."

The cast and crew of Mrs Kaushik ki Paanch Bahuein

The cast and crew of Zee TV’s Mrs Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuein were out in full force last night to celebrate the show’s 100th episode. And producer, Rashmi Sharma, has already another milestone that she aspires to reach soon - the 500th mark! It was only appropriate that Lovely (Ragini Nandwani) and Kartik (Mukul Harish) along with their co-stars Vibha Chibber (Bindeshwari Kaushik), Rajiv Verma (Mr Kaushik), Gunn Kansara (Gehna), Swati Bajpai (Nimmi), Rubina Shergill (Simran) and Deeya Chopra (Reeya) along with their male co-stars, child actors and crew of the cast donned their finest for last night’s celebration and let their hair down. A three-layered cake was cut to commemorate the occasion amidst peals of joy and laughter. The show tells the story of two diametrically opposite characters – Mrs Bindeshwari and Lovely - living under the same roof as saas-bahu. The show has maintained a steady performance since its launch and the lead actors, Mukul and Ragini, are popular in India and abroad.

Here’s raising a toast to Mrs. Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuein on reaching their first milestone and wishing them all the best for many more to come.

Walk the fashion talk

Style Check: Roshni Chopra

She is hot, happening and has a cool fashion quotient. Roshni Chopra often spotted in dresses, loves to wear kurtis, denims and skirts. She has more than 200 pair of shoes and over a 100 bags. Fashionista Roshni reveals her style and fashion secrets.

Fashion to me…

Is an expression. It is not just about looks or looking good. But it’s about freedom. The freedom to be who you are and wear what you feel is right.

My favourite shopping destination

Paris, New York and Dubai. I keep visiting New York so I always shop there. Also, Dubai is closer to home and I’ve some friends there.

Not brand conscious?

I believe in comfort and I am not really so brand conscious. As long as the design is good andd the material is comfortable, I don’t care about brands. My favourite designers are Monisha Jaising, Rana Gill and Sabyasachi for Indian wear.

I love shoes

I’ve over 100 bags and love shoes too. I think I have more than 200 pair of shoes. I love leather bags with an Italian touch. My favourite brand for bags is Louis Vuitton.

My usual outfits

You can often spot me wearing summer skirts and kurtis with denims. We live in a country and Mumbai never really has winter. So I always wear clothes that keep me cool. Also since I am shooting most of the time, I don’t like to wear heavy clothes after the shoot.

Fashion tip for fans

Just be yourself. Because if you wear what makes you feel comfortable, you will always look good. Also, keep it simple.

TREND SETTER
Defining style

Every person has a sense of style in his own right. Yet there are only few who'd attract the second glances, who have the power to make the camera go zoom on them. It could be tousled hair, it could be torn jeans. Our this week's face in the crowd Shubra Kaul, mechanical engineering student, UIET, like to set her own trends, while experimenting with clothes.

Your sense of style is…

I usually wear things which make me look stylish and bold, something that makes me stand apart from the crowd. My style is purely experimental and with a touch of glamour. I do not believe in following the existing trends but making my own. I believe any outfit looks good when carried confidently. Being confident is the key to looking good according to me.

Latest addition in the wardrobe…

A sexy red dress (one piece) by a local designer

Brand freak or street smart?

Street smart as it gives me the freedom to experiment. And moreover i usually do not like repeating my clothing which is why i prefer street shopping as it is pocket friendly to me.

Choose one: Sporty, Glamorous or Chic

Glamorous for sure. I try that my clothing brings out my glamorous side.

My style icon …

Victoria beckham. She is loud and very experimental when it comes to clothing.

Who's the worst dressed celebrity around?

Malika Sherawat...She disappointed me in the Cannes film festival..Didnt like the black dress she wore on the red carpet.Anyways i can't find anything different in the way she dresses up.

One fashion trend you don't understand…

Wearing socks with heels.

Your take on accessories

I usually try to keep the accessories to the minimum. For me any accessory that enhances the look of the dress is fine with me. I like to wear a watch as an accessory..that's my fav.

One thing that boosts your confidence

Heels...they give a beautiful posture to the body.

I would love to be dressed up by….

Oscar de la Renta for his beautiful and elegant evening wear and bridal wear.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is November 28...

The coming year starts slowly, giving you a chance to catch your breath. You are about to enter into one of the most important periods for your career, so unwind during the first ten days of December. If you have been planning to take a vacation go at that time, as it will be unlikely you will have a chance to take time off after that. While formulating your career strategy, it may be helpful to know that your outlook will be remarkably strong for most of the coming eight months, although not as strong from January 23 to April 13. During that phase, your progress may stall and you may have to tweak your tactics. While you have a competitive advantage in mid-June, focus on your career. In July, you can be exacting, domineering and inconsiderate in the work place; and boastful, vulgar and extravagant in private life. Some Sagittarians might risk becoming playboys, wasting their lives away in frivolous pursuits. Others can develop a moralising, religious fanaticism or else turn into hypocrites, their inner prudishness disguised by an outward appearance of joviality. Another side of the religiosity which is a danger in you can be superstition. Those born after 1980 should cast aside stubbornness and listen to the opinions of others before rejecting them. Otherwise, they will regret their actions. There could be some financial crunch in August 2012. However, you will be able to take control over the situation if you choose to be frugal for the time being. Sudden travel plans may take some of you to USA, Australia or Canada, on a special assignment. Financially it will be a fruitful trip. Gastric and digestive problems and other similar diseases are in store. Mood:  Aware of ‘emotional powder kegs’. Compatible signs: Taurus, Virgo. Lucky colours: Orange and Purple. Lucky days: Monday and Wednesday. Lucky numbers: 2, 10, 19, 21, 100. Lucky gem: Ruby. Lucky flower: Purple dog flower.

Mary Winstead (November 27, Rocky Mount, North Carolina) appeared in the Mountain West at the age of thirteen.
