Cyclist crushed to death

CHANDIGARH, Dec 20 — An unidentified cyclist was crushed to death near the Sector 26 traffic lights by an Army vehicle. The driver of the vehicle sped away from the spot and eyewitnesses could not note down the vehicle number. A case under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 26 police station.

Money snatched: The police has registered a case against two unidentified youths for snatching money from a rickshawpuller in Sector 9 here this evening.

According to the police sources, the youths on a motor cycle (CH-01-N-7347), approached a person standing near a rickshaw stand and asked for a change for Rs 100. When the person replied in the negative, one of the rickshawpullers, Rajinder Pal, a resident of Burail, took out two Rs 50 notes and offered it to the youths.

They snatched the money and tried to flee but another bystander caught hold of the mobike, as a result of which they fell down. They somehow managed to flee after abandoning the mobike. A hunt is on for them and a case has been registered at the Sector 3 police station.

House burgled: Mr Sanjay Awasthi, a resident of Sector 43, reported that some one stole one gold set, six gold bracelets, seven gold rings, five pairs of gold earrings, one gold coin, one video camera, besides two cameras from his house while he was away at Shimla. A case under Section 380 of the IPC has been registered in the Sector 36 police station.

Bootlegger held: The police has arrested Wilson, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony and has seized 12 bottles of whisky from his possession. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered at the Sector 26 police station.

Bail granted: The UT Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Mr Jasbir Singh, today granted bail to a resident of Ram Darbar in a case of attempted suicide. The accused was directed to be released after furnishing a bail bond of Rs 10,000 along with a surety of like amount.

The accused, Dipa, was arrested by the police under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code for trying to commit suicide by pouring kerosene on her body here today.

Bicycle thief: Accused of stealing two bicycles, Kharak Singh, was today remanded to the police custody till December 22 by the UT Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr H.S. Madaan.

The accused, a citizen of Nepal, was earlier booked by the Chandigarh police under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC for stealing and allegedly possessing two Hero bicycles stolen from DAV Centenary Public School, Sector 7.

According to the prosecution, the accused had stolen the bicycles on December 10. On the complaint of Mr R. Mani, the police had registered a case and arresed the accused.

Body found: The body of an unidentified woman, aged 25, was found in a field near the Ghaggar by Balbir Singh, a resident of Devinagar village, past evening. Balbir Singh said he along with Bachna Ram, was on his way to Jhuriwala Pir Baba when he stumbled on the body.

On a closer look, they discovered marks made by a weapon on her face and stomach. A case under Section 302 of the IPC has been registered by the police and the body has been sent for post mortem to the hospital.

Also, a knife, a shirt and a sock was found near the body. The police sources add that this had been done to mislead the police.

One killed: Haider Nai, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, died after being hit by a speeding truck near Chandi Mandir. A case under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC has been registered on the complaint of Devinder Mishra, a resident of Uttar Pradesh.

Three booked: At least three employees of the Godrej factory in Industrial Area, Phase VIII, here have been booked by the local police for allegedly outraging the modesty of a woman employee and threatening her.

According to the information available, Mohinder Kaur, an employee of the factory, said three members of the management — Sanjay Kak, Binnu and Ratnag — who were allegedly making a video film of the employees sitting on a dharna in front of the factory, followed her to a lavatory where they tried to outrage her modesty. A case under Sections 354 and 506 of the IPC has been registered.

One injured: A person who was pillion riding on a scooter, was injured after the scooter was hit by a speeding Maruti car. According to the information available, the driver of the scooter, Randeep, escaped unhurt, while Hamrajdeep, pillion rider, received injuries. A case has been registered against the car driver.Back

Harjinder may withdraw from contest

CHANDIGARH, Dec 20 — An Akali councillor, Ms Harjinder Kaur, who had filed nominations for the posts of the Senior Deputy Mayor and the Deputy Mayor, is likely to withdraw from the contest for the post of the Senior Deputy Mayor.

Ms Harjinder Kaur, who claims the support of the SAD General Secretary and Union Cabinet Minister, Mr S.S. Dhindsa, has reportedly decided to withdraw from the contest since its senior partner in the alliance — the BJP —had left only the post of the Deputy Mayor for SAD, according to unconfirmed reports.

While the councillor could not be contacted, the Secretary of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh(MCC), Mr H.K. Nagpal, said he had received no intimation regarding her decision to withdraw.

It may be recalled that another Akali councillor, Mr Mohinder Singh, has also filed his papers for the post of the Deputy Mayor.

BJP's claim: The President of the BJP, Mr Dharam Paul Gupta, and party councillors have refuted reports that there was disagreement among party councillors regarding the names of party candidates for the posts of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

In a signed statement, they said the reports were putting distorted facts regarding meetings of the councillors to disturb unity in the party.Back




 


DAV College win PU tennis

CHANDIGARH, Dec 20 — DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, won the Panjab University Inter-College Tennis (men) Championship, while the PU campus, Punjab Engineering College, and SGGS College, Chandigarh, finished second, third and fourth, respectively.

In the finals played here today, DAV College beat the PU campus, 3-2.

Results: DAVC b PUC, 3-2 (Sarbrinder Singh b Gagandeep Wasu, 6-1, 6-2; Robin b Birbal Wadhera, 6-0, 6-2; doubles — Sarbrinder and Robin lost to Gagandeep and Birbal 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (7-9); Reverse singles: Robin Kumar lost to Gagandeep, 1-6, 6-3, 1-1 (conceded); Sarbrinder Singh b Birbal, 6-4, 6-3).

In the match for the third place, the PEC beat SGGS College, 3-0.

In the PU Inter-College Women's Hockey Meet being played here, Government College for Girls, Sector 42, lost to Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, 0-5. MCM DAV College for Women beat Khalsa College for Women, Sidhwan Khurd, 8-0.

School athletics: The UT Inter-School Athletics meet for boys began here today at the Sector 7 Sports Complex. Mr D.S. Saroya, DPI (UT schools), inaugurated the meet.

Results: Under-19 (1,500 m) — Zulfkar 1, Harinarain 2, Satwinder 3; long jump — Sandeep 1, Jatinderbir 2, Dalip Singh 3; high jump — Shamsunder 1, Gurjeet Singh 2, Jaspal Singh 3.

Probables chosen: The Amateur Athletics Association of Chandigarh has selected 17 probables for a coaching camp beginning December 22 at the Sector 46 Sports Complex. These athletes will attend the camp to prepare for the National Inter-State Junior Athletics Meet to be held at Salem (TN) from January 7 to 11 next year. The athletes were selected in the under-14, under-16, under-18 and under-20 sections, according to Mr Ravinder Chaudhary, Secretary of the association.

The probables are as follows: Girls under-14 — Gurpeet Kaur; under-16 — Veena Yadav, Sakshi Sharma, Mukesh and Pawandeep Kaur; under-18 — Sapinder Kaur; under-20 — Pankti Lakra.

Chandigarh retain roller hockey crown

CHANDIGARH, Dec 20 — Chandigarh skaters won the senior boys' roller hockey title for the fourth time in succession at the recently concluded 37th National Skating Championship here. In the final, Chandigarh defeated Punjab, 4-1, with the goals scored by Abhishek, Parminder and Arvind Chaudhary.

In the senior and junior girls' hockey event, Chandigarh got the second place, while in the junior boys' section, it earned the fourth place.

In the individual section of the speed skating events, Harkiran Singh, a student of Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, got a gold medal in the road race which he won with a margin of 300 m. Later he also got a silver medal in the point to point race. He also won a bronze medal in the rink race-II.

Kriti Puri won a bronze medal in the time trials of rink race I in the age group of 12 to 14 of the girls' section. All city skaters train at Skating Rink under the guidance of the coach, Sarabjit Singh.

Cricket tourney: In the under-12 section of the Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament held at St John's High School, Sector 26, Morrissey House defeated Burke House by four wickets and Rice House beat Maher House also by four wickets.

In the under-16 section, Maher House defeated Morrissey House by 125 runs, while Burke House beat Rice House by 130 runs.

Cycling trials: The Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association will hold the trials to select the UT team for the fifth National Road Championships to be held at Bikaner from December 26 to 29, according to Mr Rakesh Mohindra, Secretary of the association. The cyclists will be selected in the sub-juniors, juniors and seniors categories. The interested cyclists may report at Lake Club on December 23 at 6.30 am.Back
