Ramesh, Laxman in 64-run stand HOBART, Dec 20 (PTI) The Indians four-day cricket match against Tasmania ended in the tamest of draws at Bellerive Oval here today, their only consolation being their openers coming up with a decent stand. Sadagopan Ramesh and V.V.S. Laxman put on 64 for the first wicket to give them some hope ahead of the second Test in Melbourne as the Indians reached 130 for three in their second knock by close. But the performance came on a wicket that offered nothing to the bowlers and produced one of the dullest games in recent times. The match was dead long before the Indians started their second innings, 20 minutes before the lunch interval. Tasmania stretched their overnight score of 472 for four to 548 for five in reply to the Indians 316 for nine in the first knock before a batsman in the middle decided to declare the innings of his own. Left-hander Shaun Young, unbeaten on 62 at that stage, walked off the field of his own after 80 minutes of batting even as his partner Scott Kremerskothen stood rooted at his spot. Even the umpires had no idea as to what was happening. Finally, they trudged back to the pavilion, asking the Indians to follow them. The Indians made slow progress on the benign wicket and lost their first wicket when, after reaching a chanceless 27, Ramesh edged Kremerskothen behind the stumps. He had faced 71 balls and hit one four. Just before the break, Laxman reached his half century, off 96 balls with seven fours. After stylishly pulling Young to the square leg fence, Laxman was out when he tried to flick an overpitched delivery and missed. As he stepped out of his crease, wicketkeeper David Atkinson neatly picked up the ball and dislodged his bails. In the last hour of the game, the home team made as many as 19 bowling changes over 24 overs. Every one of the Tasmanian players, including keeper Atkinson had a bowl. By this time, the players and even the umpires seemed to have lost interest in what was happening in the middle. After the last drinks interval, Rahul Dravid took strike instead of Vijay Bharadwaj, and no one seemed to notice. Bharadwaj again disappointed. He made 15 from 115 minutes off 106 balls before being trapped leg before wicket by leg-spinner Michael Di Venuto. Another major disappointment for the Indians was the poor form of off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who earlier bowled 47 overs without success while conceding 141 runs. The only wicket Tasmania lost in the morning was that of Dan Marsh, who made 157 from 297 minutes and 213 balls, hitting 12 fours and a six. The fifth-wicket pair of Marsh and Young put on 165 runs from 289 balls and 191 minutes. Bharadwaj claimed three wickets for 105 runs from 32 overs. Stand-in skipper Sourav Ganguly expressed his disappointment at the way the Tasmanians stretched their first innings and then made a mockery of the proceedings by making about 19 bowling changes in the last 24 overs. We could have also continued our innings with our tailenders, said Ganguly. There was no sense in their continuing their innings like they did. Ganguly, however, said the game was important for the youngsters in his side. There are so many youngsters who are trying to break into the side. For them this game was important. I remember in the 1996 tour to England it was the side games which brought me and Rahul Dravid into notice and finally clinched a berth for us in the Lords Test. Ganguly said he was happy with Dravid hitting form in the first innings in which the Karnataka batsman scored a hundred. He needed runs and he got them here finally. The Bengal left-hander, one of Indias formidable middle-order troika including Dravid and Tendulkar, was not worried about his own form. I had a couple of decent innings in Adelaide and even though I failed here, I hope I have saved my best for the remaining games, he said. SCOREBOARD India (Ist innings): 316/9 decl. East Bengal struggle for win LUDHIANA, Dec 20, Last years runners-up East Bengal faced gritty resistance from debutants Border Security Force, Jalandhar, before star striker Raman Vijayan struck the match winner midway through the second half to fetch full points for Calcuttas glamour outfit in the National Football League at Guru Nanak Stadium here today. In what turns out to be the best match of the league here, BSF cast aside their sluggishness to hold their rivals at bay for a considerable spell while at the same time carving out dangerous moves which, with a little more precision, could have at least fetched them one point. With todays victory, East Bengal have boosted their tally to six points from two wins while BSFs tally remains unchanged at three points from the victory against Dempo. East Bengal, despite being handicapped by the absence of key players like Chanchal Bhattacharya, Dipankar Roy and Tushar Rakshit, enjoyed an edge through superior ball control. The passes were accurate and the moves well orchestrated. While Jackson, Falguni Dutta, Anit Ghosh and Rattan Singh kept the BSF attacks in check, strikers Bijen Singh and Raman Vijayan displayed fine coordination upfront. In the opening minutes BSF showed promise through a series of raids with medio Sane Lama testing East Bengal custodian Gopal Das through a powerful long-ranger followed by striker Gurjit Atwals piledriver which, however, were off the mark. East Bengal took time to settle down and the first serious move came in the 25th minute when Raman Vijayan, after cutting through two defenders, made an attempt but he lost control. Again Bijen Singhs chip saw BSF custodian Bibhas Saha making a neat collection. A minute before the breather, Raman Vijayans angular left-footer on the run narrowly missed the far corner of the goal-post. This move was preceded by a series of unsuccessful attempts by Bijen Singh, who on the occasion, had only Mobi Singh to beat but the latter managed to kick the ball away to safety. BSFs Tapan Bhattacharya, in a counter attack, also aimed a powerful long-ranger but the ball sailed over the bar. In the second half, East Bengal made a couple of substitutions and coach Subhas Bhowmick brought in Emanuel Opoku in place of Sanatan Singh to bolster the midfield. Opokus inclusion had an immediate impact as he was instrumental in setting up the move in the 69th minute which fetched the match-winner. Having gained control of the ball on the left, Opoku sent a through pass for Rennedy Singh. Raman Vijayan, standing close by, did the final placing with relative ease much to the relief of the East Bengal camp. Thereafter, BSF hit back and on a few occasions missed sitters. First J. Oseph, despite having a clear view of the goal, wasted precious seconds in taking a shot after having cut through defenders Falcuni Dutta and Anit Ghosh. Later striker Gurjit Atwals bid was thwarted when East-Bengal defender Rattan Singh made a timely deflection at the cost of a corner. With time running out,
BSF coach Shyam Kumar brought in stalwarts like Gauranga
Paul and Abhay Mahato but the duo failed to achieve
anything worthwhile. In the last minute, East Bengal had
an easy chance when Opoku raced down the middle and had
only the goalkeeper to beat, but he only managed to shoot
straight into his hands. |
Shoaib yet to join camp KARACHI, Dec 20 (ANI) Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam is still waiting for fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar to report at the national training camp currently in progress at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Shoaib, who had gone to England for some personal reasons with the permission of the former Chairman, Dr Zafar Altaf, was supposed to report at the camp on Saturday but he failed to turn up. Intikhab said from Lahore that hopefully Shoaib would report soon, as he was very keen to have a close look at him and discuss some things with him. Intikhab has never worked with Shoaib before and admitted that since the youngster was a key member of the team going to Australia for the triangular series, he wanted to watch him closely. Shoaib had a miserable time in the Test series in Australia and personally I think this is because he lacks cricketing sense. He does not know how to make best use of his speed and work on batsmen, remarked the coach who took over his assignment two days ago. He stated that Shoaib had failed in the Test series as he was either bowling too short or too full, which made it easier for the batsmen to play him at will and score runs off him on the Australian pitches, where batsmen thrive on the cut, pull or hook shot. I want to sit down with him (Shoaib) and make best use of his energy and talent. He has to get over this 100 mph thing that the Australian media and former players played up and got him to lose line and length in the Test series, stated Intikhab. According to him, what he wanted from the youngster was consistent line and length and an occasional speed ball to surprise the batsman. It does not matter even if you bowl at 50 mph, but on a consistent line and length, it works for you, particularly in one-day matches. Asked if he thought the doubts being created about Shoaibs bowling action when he bowled a bouncer or generated extra pace were true, the former captain believed there was nothing wrong with the formers action. Ive not seen him bowling in person but from what Ive seen on television he is fine. As it is there is nothing in the laws which says a bowler cannot use his wrist they do it while bowling bouncers. Intikhab reminded that although there had been media reports about Shoaibs action being reported to the International Cricket Council (ICC), so far nothing official had come to the notice of the Pakistan Cricket Board. Giving his opinion on the Pakistan side after becoming coach once again after 1996, Intikhab had no doubt it was a talented outfit and capable of winning the triangular one-day series in Australia. Even though we have to face India for a series of matches for the first time in Australia, I think they dont have the bowling to worry us. But their batting is strong and we have to sit down and work on how best to counter that. He pointed out that the Australian had managed to show it could be done in the first Test at Adelaide by having a clear strategy for every Indian batsman. He believed that the one area in which there had been no improvement in the Pakistan team was physical fitness which also affected their fielding. I dont want to criticise anyone, but the previous coach (Richard Pybus) didnt work on this aspect at all and the boys have told me he concentrated on just the basics. At this level of cricket, these players really dont need basic coaching. My job is to work with them on how to counter the opposition and also on our strengths and weaknesses. Intikhab made it clear
he was not a great believer in having nets and instead
preferred to have the boys go through the grind of
practice match where conditions had to be made
competitive. He described the new PCB Chairman, General
Tauqeer Zia, as a man with a vision and felt if he stayed
long enough he would be good for Pakistan cricket. |
North take vital 1st innings lead CALCUTTA, Dec 20 (PTI) North Zone have assured themselves of victory in the Duleep Trophy cricket final by taking the vital first innings lead as West Zone were bundled out for 367 before the tea break on the penultimate day of the five-day match here today. Resuming at their overnight score of 237 for three in reply to North Zones first innings total of 468, only opener Wasim Jaffer stood bravely amidst the ruins as he carried his bat through with a heroic unbeaten 173 as wickets kept tumbling at the other end. Jaffer displayed very good technique and temperament during his monumental knock and remained at the crease for a marathon 613 minutes before the West Zone innings folded up for 367 about 40 minutes before the tea break. With just a days play left and with no possibility of an outright result on a good batting track, North Zone were almost certain to claim the title for the 13th time on the morrow. Churchill score 3rd straight win MARGAO, Dec 20 (PTI) Scoring once in each half, Churchill Brothers got the better of F.C. Kochin to notch up their third straight win in the fourth edition of the National Football League here today. With play mostly confined to the midfield, the hosts held a clear territorial advantage. They took the lead in the 14th minute through Ukraine recruit Andriy Malchevky. Mario Soares, who played in tandem along with Rocky Baretto in the midfield, kept up the pressure with repeated attacks and played a pass to overlapping Denzil Ferrao on the right. Denzil controlled the ball and beat a defender and sent a goalmouth cross to Andriy who tapped the ball into the empty goal. Substitute Kaustav Ghosh, who came in place of Francis Silveira who was tightly marked, made the issue safe when he unleashed a rasping 30-yard shot that hit the inner edge of the cross bar before crossing the goal line beating keeper Dinesh Nair all ends. ITL hold Salgaocar BANGALORE: Fancied Salgaocar SC, Goa, were held to a goalless draw by Indian Telephone Industries, Bangalore, in a National Football League tie here today. Salgaocar, the defending champions, put up a pathetic performance and did not play as a unit. There was not even one notable move from the Goan side and the midfield did not click. For ITI, who had the
home advantage, Nowshad Pari had all the time to boot the
ball into the net from the left flank in the fourth
minute but he struck wide. |
9-wicket win for Kiwis HAMILTON, Dec 20 (AFP) New Zealand pulled off one of their biggest cricket comebacks after a horror first day to beat the West Indies by nine wickets in the first Test here today. It took 15 overs for New Zealand to reach their target of 70, with Nathan Astle hitting the winning run off Courtney Walsh just seven overs into the middle session. The win was completed with plenty of time to spare thanks to Chris Cairns, who recorded the third-best bowling figures in New Zealand Test history with seven for 27 off 22.5 overs. It gave him 10 for 100 in the match and with his 72 runs in the first innings had little competition for the man of the match award. It was only New Zealands fifth win over the West Indies in 29 matches, the last coming 13 years ago in Christchurch when they had an even easier chase of 33 - but lost five wickets getting the runs. Todays win was achieved comfortably after Craig Spearman whacked 30 off 36 balls. Gary Stead was the only wicket to fall but there was bad news for Matthew Horne who had his right index finger broken by Franklyn Rose. He had to retire hurt for five and will miss the second Test starting on Boxing Day Sunday in Wellington. Although New Zealand had the better of four of the last five days, they had gone into day two with the West Indies 282 for one on a good batting pitch. New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming agreed it was one of the teams better victories. Jeeta Ram proved to be more skillful and adept as he easily won the gruelling race in which Sarabjit Singh of the hosts and Pardeep Singh Sandhu of Punjab Police claimed the silver and the bronze, respectively. The stiff breeze which the cyclists had to encounter head on only led to increase in timings of the cyclists. Another significant factor for the poor timings clocked by cyclists is that the velodrome here has a circumference of 500 metres, while other velodromes have a circumference of 333.33 metres, which meant that cyclists pedalling here had to be contend with an increased distance. Todays results: (all finals): 4000m individual pursuit (for men): Jeeta Ram (Railways) 1, Sarabjit Singh (Punjab) 2, Pardeep Sandhu (Punjab Police) 3. 3000m individual pursuit (for women): Rameshwari Devi (Manipur) 1, O. Binakumari Devi (Manipur) 2, S. Sindhu (Kerala) 3. 1000m metres mass start (sub junior boys): U. clarke (AP) 1, K. Geenady Singh (Manipur) 2, W. Nilkamal Singh (Manipur) 3. |
