Harassment:
Local traders and residents are sore over the local octroi contractors for their alleged intimidating and harassment tactics to enhance returns. They alleged that contractors without any municipal official accompanying them make checks on their own. The norms permit checking of vehicles only in league with a municipal official. According to reports, at the local bus stand, contractors even check the briefcases of passengers.

MALERKOTLA
Medical camp:
A camp for diabetes patients was organised here on Sunday by CARTC of Chandigarh. Dr Subhash Goyal, Dr Mahesh Sharma and Dr Bansal examined the patients. Medicines were given to the patients on concessional rates.

MOGA
Body found:
An unidentified body of a person belonging to Uttar Pradesh has been found by the police from the fields near Ajitwal village, about 18 km from here, according to reports received here on Monday. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. It reportedly bears some injury marks, the reports said.

PHAGWARA
Poet honoured:
Noted Punjabi poet and lyricist Prof, Kashmir Qadarwas honoured and a memento and a scroll were presented to him at an interface with him organised jointly by the Punjabi Lekhak Sabhas of Palahi and Phagwara here on Sunday. Tributes to Kargil martyrs were paid and a two-minute silence preceded the function.

Workshop completed: The Rotract Club of Chandigarh Mid-town completed its 15-day children's workshop at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41 on Sunday. The concluding function comprised a variety programme of dance and modelling, besides an exhibition of works created by the children. The chief guest, Capt M. Kahlon, President of the Rotary Mid-Town Club, gave away prizes. The Rotract President, Ms Puneeta Singh, said that the next project of the club would be to raise funds for soldiers injured at Kargil.

Tailoring school: The Lions Club Chandigarh Mid-town opened a Mahila tailoring and embroidery school in Colony No. 5 in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh under the SJSRY Scheme. Each trainee will be given a stipend of Rs 100 per month. The school was inaugurated by Lion Dr N.K. Grover,Vice-District Governor of 321 F.

Elected: The following have been elected the office-bearers of the LIC Class I (retd) Officers Association: President — Mr M.L. Gandhi; Vice-President — Mr B.L. Bansal; Secretary — Mr T.C. Chopra; Joint Secretary — Mr S. N. Chhabra; and Treasurer — Mr Prem Singh.

KHARAR
Immunised:
As many as 100 poor children below the age of 10 were immunised by the local Rotary Club at two camps organised here on Sunday. Mr Ashok Sharma, President of the club, and Mr Amrish Shukla, its Secretary, said here on Monday that the camps were organised in KTM Colony and Bangla Colony in Kharar. These camps were organised in assistance with the Rotary District 3080. The next dose will be administered to the children on November 14.

SAS NAGAR
Blood donation:
The Ropar District Cooperative Milk Producers Union organised a blood donation camp at Verka Milk Plant here on Monday in aid of soldiers fighting in Kargil. Dr Rajinder Singh, Civil Surgeon, Ropar, inaugurated the camp. Forty persons gave blood and 208 were enlisted in case of a future need.

HISAR
Brother murdered:
The police on Monday arrested two persons on a charge of murdering their brother over a family dispute in Singhwa Ragho village in the division on Sunday. According to the police, Satyawan (27), was allegedly murdered by his brothers Ramesh and Suresh with a sharp-edged axe after reportedly tying him up with rope. The arrest was made after a case was registered under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC.

SIRSA
Alleged:
Members of the local Kisan Sangarsh Samiti, in a charter of demands to Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, alleged that farmers of this district were facing acute shortage of electricity. They alleged that the claim of Chief Minister Bansi Lal that 24-hour power would be supplied to people of state after June 30 had not been implemented. The farmers were facing problems due to erratic power supply and low voltage. They threatened a stir and a refusal to pay their bills if the power supply was not improved soon.

Spurious fertiliser: The police registered a criminal case on a charge of keeping spurious and substandard fertilisers against partners of M/s Ram Chand Pawan Kumar of New Mandi here on Saturday on a complaint of Mr Amar Deep Singh, Quality Control Inspector, Haryana Agriculture Department, here in which it was alleged that accused had stored spurious and substandard fertiliser for sale in their godowns. On information, a raid was conducted at godowns and samples of the fertiliser were sent to Faridabad for detailed examination. The alleged accused have reportedly absconded.

Yoga camp: A day-long yoga training camp was organised by the District Yoga Association at Bhagat Singh park here on Sunday. Dr O.P. Chaudhary, District President of Yoga Association, highlighted values of yoga in our daily life. A large number of persons participated in the camp.

Cheating case: Vikas and Hari Kishan were arrested on Sunday on a charge of cheating. A case under Sections 420, IPC and under Sections 51/52/6/66/68-A of the Indian Copy Right Act was registered against them on a complaint by Gurmeet Singh Sodhi of the Indian Music Industry, New Delhi, in which it was alleged that accused were supplying duplicate audio cassettes. The police also seized 830 duplicate audio cassettes from their shop during a raid here on Sunday.

Water shortage: People all over the district are facing an acute water shortage. A report on Monday said residents of Dakotawali street in Nohria Bazar here are facing problems because of non supply of water for about a week. The tubewell supplying water to them had developed some snag and the supply was stopped. Residents of the grain market of Ellenabad in the district are also facing the same problem.

Complained: Seema Rani of Rangri village near here in a complaint has alleged that she has been beaten by her in-laws and has been kicked out from her in-laws house by them. She was married to Madanlal of local Khairpur on March 28 adequate dowry was given to her in-laws but the accused were not satisfied hence she was mercilessly beaten up.

SONEPAT
Robbed:
Mr Anil Goel, an arhtia of Messrs, Jagdish Rai and Ashok Kumar of Gohana foodgrains market, was allegedly robbed of Rs 2.64 lakh and a new Maruti car at gun-point by four car-borne unidentified robbers between Mundlana and Sirsadh villages in the Gohana subdivision of this district on Sunday.

Dead telephones: A large number of telephones in Mohalla Kallan here remained dead for second day on Monday following the cutting of underground telephone cables at two places by the labourers digging trenches for laying pipes commissioned by the Public Health Department. This has caused wide spread resentment among the telephone subscribers. The telecom department authorities have so far failed to take any action against the contractor and the labourers who were responsible.

YAMUNANAGAR
Arrested:
The police has arrested four accused who were involved in a firing incident here and seized one pistol and four live cartridges from them. Mr K.K. Sindhu, superintendent of Police, said on Monday that on June 21 Mr Raj Kumar was shot at around 9 a.m. at HUDA colony near here by unidentified persons. The police arrested Prem Chand and Ashok Kumar, residents of Banaras (UP), Daulat Ram of Bulandshehar (UP) and Prabhati Lal of Yamunanagar under Sections 307/334/120 B and the Arms Act, in this connection.

Parishad chief: Mr Mahesh Kumar Gautam was on Sunday unanimously elected President of the Nagar Parishad, Nainadevi, at a meeting of the parishad presided by Subdivisional Magistrate Roshan Lal Rana, 75 km from here. Earlier president Om Parkash Sharma had resigned and this post was lying vacant for some time.

NURPUR
Protest:
Shopkeepers of Jassur town, near here closed their shops on Sunday for two hours in protest against the increasing incidents of burglaries in the markets. The local Market Welfare Committee alleged that certain miscreants had been creating nuisance under the influence of liquor since long but the police had failed to curb their attempts. On Saturday evening, Bindu allegedly beat up a shopkeeper. Only after strong protests from the shopkeepers the police on Sunday arrested the accused against whom a case has been registered under Section 324 of the IPC.
