Tributes:
People from all walks of life, including representatives of various parties, paid tributes to the founder of Mata Kaulan Ji Mission Hospital, Ravinder Singh, on his bhog here on Wednesday.

Milton symposium: Dr B.L. Chakoo, Professor of English and Dean, Faculty of Languages, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, has been invited to chair some of the sessions at the sixth international Milton Symposium at the University of York, U.K., which will be held from July 18 to 23.

Appeal: Mr Kuldip Singh Kahlon, president, Shiromani Youth Akali Dal (Kahlon), has urged noted film actor Dilip Kumar to return “Nishan-e-Pakistan”, given to him by the Pakistan Government last year, in protest against the Kargil intrusion.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Robbers held:
The district police claims to have arrested the robbers and recovered arms and ammunition from them. Mr Parmraj Singh Umranangal , SSP, said here on Wednesday that under a special drive launched in the district to nab anti-social elements the Amloh police got information about the four robbers who were arrested from Rajgarh Channa village.

JALANDHAR
Extension:
The Heads of Association of Government-aided Recognised Schools of the district has demanded an extension in the filing of registration forms by the Punjab School Education Board. This was stated by the association at a meeting here on Wednesday.

KAPURTHALA
School building:
Resentment prevails among residents of the local link road locality over the alleged illegal construction of a big hall on the second floor of the building of a school. A portion of the eastern wall of the newly constructed hall collapsed following a heavy rain on Tuesday.

LUDHIANA
Training course:
The Krishi Vigyan Kendra , Gurdaspur, will organise a three-month training course in agriculture for young farmers. This was disclosed by the Associate Director (Training), PAU, at KVK, Gurdaspur. The trainees will be imparted practical training in dairy, poultry, vegetables, mushroom cultivation , horticulture, maintenance of tractor and other farm machinery, farm management and bee-keeping.

Held: The police has arrested the owner of a video library, Prabhjot Singh, for allegedly selling pirated video cassettes and compact discs. A case under the Copyright Act 1957, has been registered against him.

PHILLAUR
Course concludes:
A three-day course on "Human Rights and Protection" organised by the Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, concluded on Wednesday. Mr G.S. Bhullar, Additional Director General , Police Training, Punjab, delivered the valedictory address.

ROPAR
Park Shaheedan:
Mr Inder Sain Chhatwal, president of the local Municipal Council, has rededicated park Shaheedan , situated in Giani Zail Singh Nagar here, to the residents. The park has been renovated at a cost of about Rs 1 lakh by the council.

Celebrated: The 50th Vanamahotsava was celebrated with enthusiasm at Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Plant here on Wednesday. Mr S.K. Tuteja, Chairman, PSEB inaugurated the function by planting a sapling. A cultural programme was presented by children of GGSSTP High School, Nuhon Colony, Ropar.

Local Youth Congress leaders Bakhshish Singh Vickey has been appointed joint secretary of the District Ludhiana Congress Committee.

Helpline service: Alcoholics Anonymous Chandigarh on Thursday introduced a 24-hour telephone helpline service at number 650111 for providing information about alcoholism and the AA programme of recovery. Anybody who has a drinking problem and families whose members have this problem can seek help by dialling this number.

Sarvodaya yatra: Mr Yashpal Mittal, a former president of the All-India Sarva-Seva Sangh, is on a 'Sarvodaya Yatra' of northern states since June 30 to disseminate Gandhian thoughts of love, unity, prohibition and khadi gramudyog. The yatra, after passing through Punjab and Haryana, will reach Gandhi Smarak Bhavan, Sector 16, on July 25.

Modelling workshop: The three-day modelling workshop of the Chandigarh Institute of Modelling and Arts (CIMA) concluded in Sector 35 on Wednesday. The training was conducted by Ms Kavita Sobti, Siyaram Star Miss Chandigarh 1999, and Ms Ashima Bhalla, Miss North 1999.

Nominated: Mr Praveen Chandra Goyal, a lawyer practising at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, has been appointed senior central standing counsel in the court. Mr Goyal is the son of the first city MP, Mr Sri Chand Goyal. The term of appointment is for a period of three years.

Public grievances:
Mr Jasbir Singh Bir, Deputy Commissioner, Patiala, will hear the grievances of the public under the programme "Sangat Darshan" in Sarseeni village on Friday at 11 am.

AMBALA
Internet:
More than 250 applications for Internet connections are pending with the Telecom Department, Ambala, due to the shortage of equipment. A deputation of the Ambala Traders Federation led by its president, Mr N.C. Jain, met Mr N.K. Mangla, Chief General Manager, Haryana telecom circle in this regard.

HISAR
One killed:
A member of a wedding party was killed on the spot and four others were injured when the jeep in which they were travelling overturned near Sumran village on Wednesday. The party was returning from Noorpur to Dhana Kalan village in the district. The deceased was identified as Abhey Singh of Jamalpur village.

JIND
Power cuts:
Undeclared power cuts have paralysed life in Jind town and the surrounding areas. Residents have to spend sleepless nights as a result. Besides , there is low voltage and fluctuation.

Arrested: The district police has arrested Joginder Singh, a resident of Dhamtan village, in the district on a charge of murdering Baljeet Singh, a constable. This was stated on Wednesday by Mr Manjit Singh Ahlawat, SP.

KURUKSHETRA
Installed:
Dr O.P. Lalit and Mr Rajnish Wadhwa were installed president and secretary, respectively, of the Rotary Club, Kurukshetra, for the year 1999-2000 at a function here on Wednesday. District Governor Arun Sharma was the chief guest.

SIRSA
One held:
Manjeet Singh alias Patwari of Mandi Kalanwali in Sirsa district was arrested by the Kalanwali police in a theft case on Wednesday. This was stated by Mr B.S.Sandhu, SP, Sirsa, here.

Scooter recovered: The Sirsa police arrested Kala alias Kalia and Deepa on Wednesday and recovered a stolen scooter from their possession. Giving this information, Mr B.S. Sandhu, S.P. Sirsa, said here that the scooter which belonged to Sunil Kumar of Gali Khajanchianwali was stolen on the night of June 29.

YAMUNANAGAR
Patrol duty:
The Deputy Commissioner, Yamunanagar, has directed all able-bodied adults of municipal towns and villages in the district to perform patrol duty at night with a view to preventing sabotage and ensuring the safety of villagers.

CHAMBA
Arrested:
The District police has arrested five persons on a charge of stealing six quintals of electrical wire at Lahal village in Bharmaur tribal subdivision. According to the police the five were arrested on a tip-off by certain local residents.

MANDI
Charas seized:
A party headed by Mr Vinod Dhawan, Additional S.P. raided a shop in Badanu village , 7 km from here , and recovered 4.7 kg of charas from Lalman of Bheri village. The police has registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and arrested Lalman.

NURPUR
Resentment:
Resentment prevails among ex-servicemen of the state who have joined government service on or after January 1,1996, as they have been denied the fixation of their salaries for the corresponding period of the service rendered in the armed forces. The Himachal National Ex-Servicemen Coordination Committee has flayed the amendment to the service rules for ex-servicemen in the state.

SHIMLA
Honesty:
In an exemplary act of honesty, a railway mechanical carriage cleaner has deposited an unclaimed bag containing Rs 9557, a wrist watch and a handkerchief with the railway authorities here. The cleaner, Mr Sunder Lal, found the bag while cleaning the coaches of the holiday special which arrived here from Kalka on Wednesday.

SUNDERNAGAR
Forum directive:
The Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Mandi, on Thursday directed the postal authorities to refund Rs 6 and pay Rs 500 as compensation and Rs 100 as costs to a consumer from whom the postal authorities had wrongly charged Rs 6 for a letter for which the Telecom Department had already paid.
